Quinta Katinka: off-grid farm of Katja and Robin in Central Portugal!
Small but important jobs have been done in May. We rebuild our composting toilet, saved some plants from vole attacks and built a (new) summer shower!

your dog is broken, trying to eat itself... the bought sawdust is only hard since it was compressed so you got more in the same package size ;-)

I made a few wire cube cages for some jujube trees. Many times I've noticed evidence of vole activity around the entire boundary of the cages. I had also added a top panel to the cubes, I'm not sure if this was necessary, but thought that it wouldn't hurt. So far, so good.
@offgridquintakatinka
@offgridquintakatinka Год назад
Hmm, yes we wondered about that too. Let's see how it goes.

lovely "ugly shower " :) do you leave kivis in they pots? you don't need to plant them directly in to the ground? (I am asking as we got 3 of them and they still in pots as I waiting for autumn to plant them
@offgridquintakatinka
@offgridquintakatinka Год назад
We did have them in pots but they didn't grow very well, that why we are trying them like this.

Love the new poo box! Have you tried moist sawdust/wood shavings? I think it helps to further eliminate any odour and therefore helps with the fly problem. I think it works by reducing the air pockets that are present in the dry stuff. Also I think if you store the sawdust in a pile it begins to breakdown, making it biologically active. Obviously I'm assuming (I'm fairly new here) that you have ample water to keep the pile moist. I was considering getting 5 to 10 buckets and filling them all before adding to the compost pile, just to try and cut down the frequency of the poo job. What are your thoughts?
@offgridquintakatinka
@offgridquintakatinka Год назад
Never heard of keeping it moist before. We thought keeping it dry was important actually. But what you say is interesting. Well check it out

What month do you start harvesting olive seeds?? I often watch your videos and I have followed them, but my favorite video is when harvesting olive seeds. thank you
@offgridquintakatinka
@offgridquintakatinka Год назад
Hi. We harvest in December or January. The oil from the early olives will be a little more bitter tasting, while the later ones will be a smoother taste, which we prefer.

@@offgridquintakatinka I will be working in Portugal in the next 2 months , incidentally in the olive field , maybe this will be my knowledge , thank you
