We change with age, I suffered through the old man and the sea and Sult ( hunger) in school. But when I read the old man and the sea a couple of years ago I cried, the same with Victoria by Hamsun, I cried like a baby. Sometimes we need more experience, to enjoy the book. I just finished for whom the bell tolls, and Salka Valka, the last one because you told me to 😉

I hope you are right with us needing experience in some instances. Already looking forward to do some rereading in 10 years time to see what has changed. Did you like those books? I am looking forward to Salka Valka myself! :)

Interesting month for you! I haven’t read very much this month, and I think the ones I’ve read have all been pretty good, so that’s pretty good I guess 😊 There were also a couple of nonfiction audiobooks that didn’t really live up to my expectations but I really liked Stolen/Stöld by Ann-Helén Laestadius and Before the coffee gets cold

I would agree, as long as the reads are good everything is fine :) The coffee book I have read, thought it was okey, but unsure about if I’ll read the sequels. Stolen looks like a really interesting read! Putting it on my TBR :)!

@@becomingabookworm I saw someone talk about “the coffee book” 😂 saying it was tell not show, and I had the opposite thought while reading it, so I can see how it comes across very differently to readers. I could relate a lot to some of the stories, especially the dementia one, so I think that made it more powerful for me. I was invested in the stories and didn’t analyze the writing that much, although I liked that as well. Yes Stolen I would recommend, second part is also out in Swedish and I think there will be a third part as well. It was and wasn’t what I expected.

It does make a huge impact what one emphasizes when reading. For me I feel like it’s often a bit random what I get hung up on while reading. Hope it gets easier to predict what I like and not 😅

@@becomingabookworm That’s true. At the same time I think a good book should just be, the story should just unfold without you noticing that you’re reading. Unless the writing is very poetic etc then that’s ok to notice 😊

I feel the same, but I do also think that a lot of people enjoy reading when they have to stop and think. I am not one of those..

NRK hadde en serie om Hansum's bøker da han hadde jubileum i Korona årene eller der omkring, hvor de leste hans bøker. Arrangementet var laget av Hamsun Museum, her in Nordland.

Yes! Synchronicity alive! I was thinking today of the name Lisel, how much I like it. I have never had that thought before. I heard a similar name pronounced, and I thought, No, Lisel, had I a daughter I would call her Lisel! And,I have read nothing this month except half of Oscar Wilde's Complete Short Fiction in a Penguin Classics edition and a dozen poems by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which impressed hell out of me I think I'll read some of his essays soon. I read a lot of other poetry too and listened to podcasts, notably The Rest Is History. Otherwise, painting pictures

I can't believe I've actually read two of the books you read in May. I've read Knut Hamsum's Hunger and W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz. I really enjoyed Hunger. Taken in context to the time when Hunger was written, Hamsum is striking in how he turned from the realist movement in literature and explored ideas central to the modernist movement. I've also read Pan by him. It was great. I loved how different it was. W.G. Sebald is an author I really admire. I've read two of his books, Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz. I loved Rings of Saturn. It was a marvelous book. Austerlitz, on the other hand, I did not like at all. The main character was not likeable. He struck me as being unreasonable and ungrateful. An author I am sure I've recommended to you is Robert Walser. I've read two books by him, The Tanners and Jakob von Gunten. I loved both. There is a peaceful sensitivity in Walser's writing. Such wonderful books.

There is a first time for everything! I did start Hamsuns Growth of soil many years ago but stopped half way. Reading Hunger made me want to give it a try once more. I think I will give Sebald a rest for a while, but will check out Walser. Thanks for the recommendation!

I have tried reading Hunger (Sult), as well as some of his other books. I wouldn't call Hunger fun, nor do I like the writing style, at all. I forced myself through Mysteries (Mysterier) for LIS, but it was a struggle. 😅 The only Frode Grytten I have read are a short story collection (Popsongar), a picture book (Gabba gabba heyand), and a non-fiction on Dublin (surprisingly called Dublin). Loved the short stories, the picture book was fun, but I disliked the book on Dublin. 🤣

Yes, I know you and Hamsun don´t get along that well 😅 I did actually consider reading Gryttens "Menn som ingen treng" last month. Will probably get to that one before the year ends. Surprised of how much I like bikubesong.
