I have been told many times over the years to check out John Martyn's music, and I was recently introduced to this particular song and I immediately fell in love with it. It's a tricky one - once you get the not-so-simple guitar part down, you have to try and phrase the vocals casually on top, which is hard to do when you're concentrating on the guitar! Anyway, finally got a decent take on day two of trying. Enjoy.
Thanks also to ‪@BanthamLegend‬ for helping show me how to play it!
Technical details:
Guitar is a Martin DR, Drop D Tuning down a half step (That's how John did it, makes the strings floppier). Recorded live on a Zoom H6. Printed to 1/4" tape and Mixed in Pro Tools.
Filmed on a Canon EOS R with an RF 24-70L lens, a Hollywood Black Magic 1/4 filter, a polarizer and a variable ND. Edited in Adobe Premiere. Video by Kelly Oden.

My dad was very good friends with John and shared many memories in Chester together. A simple man with an amazing gift. I still think about John. His final years were seriously poor for him. It makes me happy to see people still enjoy his music. Very good!

@8Clips
@8Clips 3 года назад
Quite tricky is a hell of an understatement. For most musicians this piece is simply out of reach. Guitar part is technically difficult as it is, but it's rhythmically challenging and that makes it just ridiculous to try and sing over. Amazing performance as always from Josh.

Listen to the dynamics that this gentleman applies when he plays & sings. Like a pulsation within the best. He monitors his playing & singing with a rhythmic emphasis on volume that dances in & out of the song. In many of of these spaces he puts in tasteful finger picking sometimes on the off beat. This is very effective at pulling the ear in & whereby paying attention to his guitar work. Truly a brilliant musician who will travel far within his abilities & talent.

Yes. Michael Johnson's first two solo albums are a treasure trove of songs, both originals and covers like this. He was an excellent guitarist and wonderful singer with a wry sense of humor. Based in Minneapolis at the time, he'd remark in concerts in the mid-70s that he was "famous locally throughout the country". When you're stuck for your next song, Josh, take a look at There is a Breeze or For All You Mad Musicians. You are sure to find something both challenging and engaging.

Nice version of this classic. God rest John Martyn, true original. Love and peace.

Love to hear Josh doing some more John Martyn covers, whole selection of songs that would sound great.
