Man, thank you so much for taking time to make this video, this is really helpful for us who are having trouble learning lighting. This was actually a video that I watch for the first time but understood it fully, really learned a lot man. Especially with the directional light target thingy, I have seen that before but I fully understand it on the way you explain it. Thanks again man, appreciate the effort and everything!

great video. very helpful especiallly with the mesh light and lighting setup generally. a possible critical mistake i notice based on my understanding of the help files is that diffuse samples does not represent light bounces. its represents anti aliasing samples. if you want to increase bounces of diffuse light you would have to increase the diffuse ray depth in the roll out just below, same as if you wanted to have more refraction bounces. by changing the settings in the ai standard shader your material is no longer physically correct, although it may look cool. SO you can keep you diffuse samples low and crank the diffuse ray depth to maybe 3 or 4 to get more color bleed. again this is just how i understand it based on my reading but it does seem to make sense.
@yonesantana
@yonesantana 7 лет назад
Hello Ayahuasca, Thanks for clearing that up. You are absolutely right in that the Diffuse Ray Depth are the overall bounces of light in the scene and that is my lack of understanding of Arnold. I tested out some settings in my scene with some surprising results: The higher diffuse ray depth at values between 3 - 12 has no visible effect on creating colour bleed, in my scene, but it does increate the overall diffuse illumination. The diffuse bounce colour of the White walls is also increasing and this is counteracting the spread of the red colour. If all the walls were red I believe this colour would be more visible and Physically accurate. I still haven't found a way of making colour bleed without being physically inaccurate Thanks for your question. It really helps me to get under the hood with what Arnold can do.

Great video!I am actually trying to do follow your instructions in my scene with the difference that I am putting an image on the aiutility. The problem is that it only shows when my settings are very low. When I increase them to get a good image it only shows a lot of white coming through the windows since the lights are over there. Any idea what I can do to actually show the image plane without removing the lights?

Hello~ currently i'm doing some room using Maya 2019 and i want sunbeam(lightray) coming out of window, i used the directional light and adjusted the light but i want rays i watched the video and you using spotlight inorder to make lightray my question is the directional light can't cast lightrays? we must use additional light source to cast shadow? Thanks.

I have interesting question, or at least i find it interesting. So i am animating the focal length of the camera from 35mm to 300mm. As it go smaller logically the light gets brighter because the lens is opening, is there a way to animate the lens but this to not effect the brightness of the light? It's more of a camera question, I know!

i am wondering that u change the Gamma setting to 2.2 is it correct way to make sure the CG Scene in right color space and it don't need to modify the color space in NUKE?
@yonesantana
@yonesantana 7 лет назад
Hi Thanks for your question, I can't say what I'm doing is correct, because I'm trying to make a very simple lighting setup using "only" maya. The scene that I'm rendering in the tutorial, I had no plans to take it into Nuke and colour correct it in any way. I would have stuck to a linear workflow if that was case. So I'm only adding the 2.2 gamma correction so that the Arnold render view matches the standard Maya render view. (At least in my version of Maya 2017 they appear different.) So any beginners aren't confused why one image appears darker than the other. At least that's what I tried to achieve: I understand a few people have asked me the similar questions about why I'm displaying the render in 2.2. Linear workflow is a lot more complicated than that, so if you'd like me to make an in depth video on linear workflow please let me know.

thanks for your kindly response.i find other commends already solve my confusion! Anyway, ur Tut still be very helpful for me i will keep follow it. :D
@rafaeljuarez1522
@rafaeljuarez1522 7 лет назад
Nice Tut man but I think there is something wrong with your linear workflow. You have the color managment of maya activated, so if you put your gamma in 2.2 and you keep the sRGB gamma of the color managment you basically are doubling the gamma. If you want to manually set the gama in 2.2, you should turn off the color managment, or switch it to Raw.
@BorjaMorales
@BorjaMorales 7 лет назад
Rafael Juarez that's correct, if your view transform is set to sRGB it is already applying a gamma correction so you don't need to put a 2.2 gamma

Hello. Do you know any interior lighting tutorial with Arnold which could be really reliable?. I come from 3DSMAX & Corona and I'm discovering MAYA but Arnold still (I think) can't beat Corona...corona is so easy, powerful and fast...And I'm a bit disapointed with Arnold. I can't find new tutorials and good support. Please help me.

Hi Bernardo, The AiUtility Material is a part of Maya 2017. Just make sure that when you are browsing for it make sure you have the "Arnold" section of the shader list selected. By default it has the "Maya" list selected. I hope that helps

Yes it is much easier to work in your own colour space in Maya 2017, but it is still quite difficult to explain what all the fuss is about.
