Maya Kamaty belongs to the new generation that makes the maloya, the traditional song form of Réunion, known outside the borders of the island. The style stems from the oppression of enslaved African and Madagasian peoples brought to the island's sugar plantations became a defiant identity symbol and therefore banned by the authorities until 1981.
Maya Kamaty's father, Gilbert Pounia, was one of the spearhead artists in the liberation of music with his band Ziskakan, in whose ranks Maya was incorporated as a backing singer at a young age. As a teenager, she put this music aside but rediscovered the importance of her Creole roots while studying in France.
She returned to the island to form her own band and write the songs for her impressive debut album 'Santié Papang', successfully combining maloya rhythms with acoustic and electronic instruments.
Maya Kamaty behoort tot de nieuwe generatie die de maloya, de traditionele liedvorm van Réunion, bekend maakt buiten de grenzen van het eiland. De stijl komt voort uit de onderdrukking van tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikaanse en Madagassische volkeren die naar de suikerplantages van het eiland waren gebracht, werd een uitdagend identiteitssymbool en daarom tot 1981 door de autoriteiten verboden. Maya Kamaty's vader, Gilbert Pounia, was een van de speerpuntartiesten in de bevrijding van de muziek met zijn band Ziskakan, in wiens gelederen Maya op jonge leeftijd werd ingelijfd als achtergrondzangeres. Als tiener zette ze deze muziek aan de kant maar herontdekte het belang van haar Creoolse roots terwijl ze in Frankrijk studeerde. Ze keerde terug naar het eiland om haar eigen band te vormen en de liedjes te schrijven voor haar indrukwekkende debuutalbum ‘Santié Papang’, waarbij ze met succes maloya-ritmes combineert met akoestische en elektronische instrumenten.
