When modeling for a game environment you always have to keep in mind that the resource impact will be related to render time etc.
By using light baking techniques you can embed light information into texture files and eliminate the need for actual lights ( at least in part )
In this short tutorial I will explain how to set this up in Maya 2015

Thank you very much for your tutorials Mike they've been a great help over time. Since a few days I'm searching for a solution if it's possible to bake the reflections and specular lights created via IBL in a texture. Object: jewel, white gold (I know this on itself is already a difficult thing to obtain. I do realise that baking a suposed to be dynamic light makes it static and less good. As you rightfully indicate though some gaming engines just can't handle this so baking is the only reasonable option.

You're in luck. I did a tutorial on this a few days ago. Here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4aGaqym_Plk.html

Is there a way when you start moving again to make it dynamic?

Tutorial on animate light? to fake a fireplace or a candle on the not visible part of a scene?
@MHTutorials3D
@MHTutorials3D 9 лет назад
SacrethHD For example, a stationary streetlight shining on the street. The light isn't moving so you can bake that light onto the street texture and save render time in your game engine

Mike Hermes yeah sure i know :) but how would u fake the light coming from a flame. how would you animate a flickering light? (the lightsource doesnt need to be visible)
@MHTutorials3D
@MHTutorials3D 9 лет назад
Well, not with baking, that's for sure. Imitating a flickering candle or flame ( without it being visible ) could be done by animating the lightsource ( turning it on and off at random ) or by moving and object back and forth in front of the light source. I did a video on how to do a stroboscope. It's the same principle

What is light baking actually used for? I'm having trouble understanding what you were trying to say.
@MHTutorials3D
@MHTutorials3D 9 лет назад
juaniusm If you bake light into textures you don't have to actually import these light into a game engine. This saves valuable render time

That's was a nice tutorial :) ... I have a question... How can you (after all the bake) take all the base texture with the shadows and turn it into one single image?.

Like you said, bake it

Hey mike,can you include the lesson files for these tutorials? It makes it easier to route out error for me .

Wisdom Tooth Hi Wisdom Tooth, I normally do but it this case the texture isn't relevant. You can apply this to any texture

Thanks for the reply,but I'm referring to the actual maya file not just the reference image.This way since I have two computer monitors I can open your finished file on one screen and copy it on the other while watching the tutorial.This I find makes it easier to copy material settings and look at the topology vertex coordinates to match it exactly as you do it without having to constantly hit pause and play(or rewind) every few seconds.

Wisdom Tooth Hi Wisdom tooth, I never ever share my Maya files. In most cases I sell them. ( finished models ) But if you want to buy them, that's possible Mike

I'm getting so many black marks on my objects for some reason.

After rendering ?

Rendering is fine, it's just that when I batch bake, it all goes messy with all these black marks on the object.
@MHTutorials3D
@MHTutorials3D 8 лет назад
And what do you bake ? Just textures or normal as well ? ( they usually cause the black spots )

Sorry for the late reply, havent had internet. I realised what it was. My UV's weren't in the 0-1 range. I planar mapped it and it extended out of that range if that makes sense. Thanks anyways :)
