I personally use soft image for modelling even though its discontinued. I find that your skill level increases the better you get with a piece of software. I know blender is the star right now and i have used it and achieved good results but I hate the fact that functionality changes depending on what keyboard shortcuts and layout you choose to have. Ease of use when it comes to a software is the most important factor in my opinion as a hobbyist

something I don't have in mind is that houdini does not need third-party add-ons and has an independent version of $ 300 for small studios, and with all the potential of houdini fx, second; Houdini being procedural gives him the advantage against other software, of course, the learning process is the most difficult

I think Blender & Houdini are the best ones out there, why? Because when they release something (tools /render engine/ lay-out), it makes sense. They are innovative~! As you said, why is 3Ds Max popular among architects? Because architects are using 3ds Max. Maya has the same reason, everyone is using Maya, because everyone is using Maya. In 4 years I've encountered many crashes in Maya, my conclusion: It's a leaking basket they try to fix with temporary 'duct tape', which creates new bugs. Houdini is the best simulation program, it's perfect and efficient. Can't say things about Cinema and 3ds Max. Blender looks very promising and can't wait to make the switch.

blender7843 have you ever used Houdini? If you had I think you would know why it’s such a powerhouse. For $250 for an indie license is relatively inexpensive and is so incredibly deep. After 20+ years in C4D I decided to try some new and I gave myself a couple of weeks with Blender, Maya and Houdini. At the end of this trial phase I was sold on Houdini. It’s feature set is so deep and the low level access you get to all of the data is so present everywhere that you would literally never need to buy a plugin for anything ever again. On top of that the fluids, particles, pyro and soft body dynamics are unrivaled by any other 3D software. Yes blender does fluids, destruction, particles etc but the quality of its simulations don’t measure to what’s being produced out of Houdini. In cases like that being a great artist will only get you so far if the tools don’t perform and Houdini’s are unmatched for those types of things. Also it’s Proceduralism. I have had creative directors ask me to make changes that were easy to make in Houdini because if it’s non destructive nodal workflow. Changes that would have been impossible to do without tons of rework and wrecked deadlines in Blender, C4D, Maya or Max. I respect how far Blender has come but once you wrap your head around Houdini there really is no other software. Houdini + Redshift FTW.

great comparison, you have missed a couple of things but very fair and accurate overall. When it comes to VFX, all the tools you mentioned for Maya were 3dsmax exclusive tools until relatively recently... and max has some more. When it comes to game development, 3dsmax used to be the de facto standard tool for game development especially because its toolset is ideal for Level and Environment design. Maya often wins due to the direct workflow between Character modeling and Character Animation where 3dsmax, while it is not a weak choice by any means, it is in some ways not as powerful as maya. But when it comes to anything that character animation, maya is not superior to 3dsmax for games in any way. Quite the opposite. Having said that, after the acquisition from Autodesk, Maya has seen a huge influx of tools nearly identical to 3dsmax which balanced the field. Today both these tools sit comfortably at the top of pretty much any professional field where they compete.

Houdini is the best, coupled with Zbrush for sculpting. When it comes to Architectural visualizations rather use architectural design softwares such as Revit, Chief Architect or even Sketchup and render using external renderer like V-ray or Lumion, unless you want to create low poly buildings for games, then use all those other 3D design softwares.

If you're starting out with 3d, or are using 3d independently, learn Blender, as it's free and open source with a great community and many great tutorials. If you're going into the industry, you can then learn whatever program the studio you're with is using, having knowledge with Blender already. I don't think there's quite a "best" program, but definitely learn Blender before anything else.

Gone are the days of needing to spend thousands of dollars to create high quality 3D content. Technology has improved. Blender has evolved to a fully capable 3D modeling/animation/video editing package. A few years ago, many Lightwave/3DS/Maya/Cinema4D users were dedicated to the product they invested time and money in. Those packages are now niche products fewer use. Blender is the future of this kind of software for two simple reasons: 1) It's free. 2) It's never ending development is inspired by passion instead of paychecks. Embrace it or not. It doesn't matter. It's not about the tools anyway. It's about the storytelling.

Blender is gonna shift the game as it's getting stronger and filling up the gaps with the other expensive softwares. I still use C4D over Blender because the transformers are way more intuitive, the interface is cleaner and more intuitive. BUT Blender IS faster than the others at modelling, as long as you do not need complexe FFD, bend modifiers, cloners along spline, etc... I tried Houdini and I really hated it : the menus make no sense whatsoever and moving in the viewport is a nightmare. Everything is counter intuitive. It's not about "different paradigm", it's about really poor design choices, just like Blender back in the day. The only good thing with Houdini getting attention is that it will force user friendly plugins like FumeFX to make new features to stay in competition.

This overview is a bit incomplete. For example, Each software you presented, supports almost all the render engines that are out there. Not just Houdini. I mean, There's even Cycles for C4D. Also, when you talked about the Render Engines, you didn't specify what the specs, the advantages and disadvantages, of the Engines are. Without it, this isn't a comparison at all. Just a list. And when you talked about Blenders compositing, you showed compositing in Photoshop. Which works, uh, slightly differently.

Houdini is the best, but it's also the hardest to learn. DON'T START WITH HOUDINI IF YOU ARE NEW TO 3D SOFTWARE. You need to experience other softwares to appreciate Houdini. Jumping right into Houdini is nightmare. Blender is free and open source with a strong community, it's a recipe for greatness. Maya is MS Word of 3D graphic. People use it because other people use it. But it's from Autodesk, and Autodesk is a BAD company. For 3DS Max and CInema4D, there's nothing significant about them. There's nothing they can do but other softwares can't do. There's nothing they do best. The same applies for Modo. Meanwhile Zbrush can't do many things, but it's the best at sculpting. Why is Houdini hard? Because in other softwares, you rarely touch math and coding. They protect you from those. But when you reach intermediate level of Houdini, you will encounter math (like linear algebra) and coding (VEX and Python). Why is Houdini best? Because everything is procedural. It's non-destructive. End result doesn't meet your need or you made mistake? Just change parameters of some node, or add/delete whatsoever. No need to do everything from scratch. And all contexts are well connected. Modelling, animation, simulation ... all use the same logic. The core of Houdini is vigorous, so SideFx can build a bunch of crazy stuffs on it without rewriting everything. New features of each Houdini version are enough to make many seperate softwares. That's how sick it is, and it shows how bad other softwares are doing (i'm speaking about Max and Maya). TLDR version: don't know where to start? Blender. Want to go hardcore? Houdini. Want a job? Maya/Houdini. Read this in 2025 and want a job? Blender/Houdini.

Well cycles is a raytraced pbr renderer with good camera and lighting adjustability... so yes in general you're good to go with blender. Its the specific simulations that make you choose one over the other I guess.... Blender is quite good at realistic hair and particle masses in general (believable insect swarms if you wish..). Basic physics and cloth simulation work as they should. Fluids and destruction simulation still do quite well eventho I guess they're not on par with a houdini. With the new mantaflow Ive seen some great smoke and fire too already but I didnt dive into it myself yet... If I didnt miss an important one this should cover alle of Blenders big simulation capabilities. This is important because advanced simulations are the only thing where blender could lack strength for photorealism.... No Probbs: Static objects, architecture, advertizement props, animals, humans, plantlife, cities, water, cloth, cars, machines, reflections, glass refraction... Maybe probbs(which doesnt say its impossible, but just hard af to get look photoreal): Hardly interactive oceanstorms, Huge imploding buildings, top level explosion simulation(Not sure on this 'cause I know too less about mantaflow) Photorealism obviously still depends all on the props that you use. If you now start learning to make your own objects there is a looooooooooong road ahead of you. A road thats entirely doable in Blender alone, but a looong one nevertheless. Alternatively there are Libraries you can use... In that case ofcourse the objectlibrary you use will always be key factor of how photoreal you can get it. The capabilities are given almost in every case except the few hard simulations that I mentioned...
@benhardwiesner6963
@benhardwiesner6963 4 года назад
I have to add that photorealism consists 90% of compositing. The difference between programs is absolutely minimal compared to difference in user skill. If a good compositor switches programs you probably wont notice that in his endresult, since its more about his skill than the tools he uses.

I have used all of them except Houdini. 3ds Max is the easiest for modeling hands down. Not that the others are bad but creating complex objects takes half the time in Max. The ability to do complex texturing has been another huge strength over the years along with a huge plug in market that made it super popular in the 90's and early 2000's. It suffered from a mediocre rendering engine straight out of the box for years, now they integrated Arnold into the base package. Maya's strength is in the rigging of characters, extremely realistic texturing with huge online texturing library's, and the efficiency of the underlying software programming. The ability to script things with it and realism made it take off for visual effects and bury SoftImage which was the king in the late ninety's and early 2000's. It gained a huge following for creating games which was 3ds Max's hidden strength for a long time. I agree that if you are going to learn one, that's the one most in demand. Blender is free and super powerful now compared to what it was early on. Its weakness is its clunky interface. It makes learning it more difficult but once you get used to it, its great. Where it really shines is the 2d and compositing right in the program. Just incredible and will really challenge Maya in the next few years because its FREE and open source. Cinema 4d has the most stream line interface but has been weak in the ability to rig characters which they have improved dramatically in the last few versions. It gained popularity from its ability to integrate with Adobe After Effects for TV commercials and does fluid and particle simulations very easily. Its been used in tons of TV commercials for drinks and cereals over the years. You get a lite version built into After Effects now and works beautifully for simple stuff and animated text. Houdini is interesting because its a much more complete package then what it used to be. It does fragmented objects and explosions beautifully but really doesn't have the user base much outside of movie studios. I think in the future, Blender is really going to give Maya a run for its money. 3ds Max may fade away because of a shrinking user base. Its owned by Autodesk which also owns Maya. They bought SoftImage and ended making it in 2015. Lightwave is still out there too but hardly anyone still uses it. I did in the late 90's because it ran on Mac and PC and the company I worked for was a mixed studio. Ultimately there is no wrong answer, its what you can afford and what interface is easiest for you to use.

Blender has 2 Main Renderers. Cycles for Ultra-Realistic PBR rendering. EEVEE for Realtime-PBR Rendering. Cycles is great for everything if you have the time to wait. EEVEE is great for Product Design and Prototyping, with faster rendering. The more time you spend doing lighting setup in EEVEE, you can get results close to Cycles and sometimes, the EEVEE renders are more appealing.

Cinema 4D, It is very easy to do something cool, but not at a 100% perfection 5. 3Ds Max It's better than blender if you work as an interior designer, and in the game industry. I work on a videogame and we don't use blender, we don't need it, we already know how to do it on other softwares and it is better for the pipeline. 6. Your may have had good intentions for this video but by sharing only superficial and mostly outdated info ( mainly about Blender ) you are misguiding a lot of people. Blender 2.81 is the best 3D software out there for beginners in almost every category you based your comparisons on. I say this with 100% confidence - I have used 3Ds Max, Maya and I also use C4D when needed. Blender has topped these guys. C4D still have the most advanced procedural workflow for moGraph and Houdini is the best for simulation VFX and such. The rest is old news, misleading and wrong info about Blender. Please if you are a beginner, make a more in-depth research on which software to start with, depending on your needs but in general, my advice is to try out Blender 2.81. Beginner-friendly, it is a suite containing every need mentioned on this video and it is free, Open Source and under heavy industry funding and active development.

Blender is a toy used by a minority of (very) loud fanatics. (Sorry to say, but it applies to 2.8 as well - however devs made a big step to the right direction.) If you ever want to work in the CG industry as a professional, avoid Blender as your first CG software. If you are only looking for a free hobby tool then sure, join the cult it's gonna be fun. Maya has good foundations, but recently became a pain because Autodesk made it to a ... well, typical Autodesk product: a bugfest. However Maya is the de facto industry standard for animation so if you ever want to be an animator Maya is the only way (unfortunately). Max is more or less the same except it has tight connection to windows and because of this not really used in large vfx houses as a core pipeline tool. C4D: performs well on a minor market of motion graphics, it has anything that a small studio needs but nothing more. If you accept its limits you can get a reliable all around CG tool, just don't expect to use your C4D knowledge on large scale high-end projects. Houdini: currently the only truly high end CG software that can deliver anything a large studio needs and is not a victim of corporate idiocracy (like... ehm ... Maya). If you learn Houdini you'll definitely find job in the industry. Let's not deny it, the learning curve is steep, but rewarding. Houdini is not sacrificing user control just to hide confusingly complex problems into shiny and easy to use tools, so in Houdini doing simple things is complicated but doing complicated things is simple. All in all, if you are new in CG then only one thing you need to remember: you don't LEARN CG software, you GET USED TO THEM. Employers are not interested in what you KNOW, they only care if you have already done the SAME (or very similar) what they need before. If you apply to an architectural visualization job, then you need to show architectural visualization renders in your reel, if you wanna do character animation you need to show character animation and if the project is about jumping bunnies then the more jumping bunny you have in your reel is the better. So it doesn't really matter what software you choose, just stick to it and practice. Then practice more. The more you do the more you get used to it and after a while (don't expect any result in less than two years) you'll be able to do things and then you can show in your reel that whatever the employers are looking for you've already done it before.

I’ve used all except C4D here and I’d say they all have their strengths, but with Blender, and some free or inexpensive addons, you have all the strengths. Modelling is already great but Boxcutter makes it perfect for hard surface too. Animation is great. Rendering is great but you can use external renderers as well - if you need more speed, get ecycles. Procedural modelling is limited but Sverchock is free, Sorcar is free, AnimationNodes is free and between those three you have grasshopper and Houdini rolled into one. Particle nodes is coming soon and the everythingNodes project is underway. Blenders procedural texturing is already great. Import/export is great. Interface is the cleanest and the only one of the lot that looks like it was made within the last 10 years (don’t get me started on Rhino...). Blender is free and so is Houdini Apprentice but you can’t use HA for commercial work so it’s only a learning platform. Let’s also talk about BlenderXR add on for blender VR interface as well as an official one being worked on as well as Grease Pencil for 2D animation as well as INCLUDING THE SKETCH STAGE OF DESIGN INTO THE SAME DESIGN ENVIRONMENT as will produce your final models, renders and (potentially) drawing package. That is huge. Honestly, if you’re thinking about getting into 3D now, I’d recommend Blender. As a professional there are issues with me trying to join projects with other designers using Revit and 3DS so I use what I need to be a part of the system. I’m just always feeling hampered by the other softwares.

Blender can do mostly everything 3ds max, Maya and Zbrush can do. It can also do 2D. It's all in one package and completely free. It's the future.

I found that blender is only easier to learn than houdini. It just has a less than intuitive layout and it requires you to memorize a lot of short cuts. Even though blender has the most community support and online tutorials, Cinema 4d is by far the easiest to learn. This isn't coming from an autodesk shill either, I exclusively use blender nowadays since I don't have to worry about licensing and addons for the most part.
