Calakmul - A Majestic Maya City in the Heart of the Jungle
Deep within the dense tropical forests of Mexico’s Campeche state, the Calakmul Archaeological Site stands as one of the most significant and least-explored Maya cities in Mesoamerica. Once a thriving metropolis and a powerful rival to Tikal in modern-day Guatemala, Calakmul was at the heart of the Maya civilization for over a thousand years, from 500 B.C. to 900 A.D.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Calakmul covers around 70 square kilometers and is surrounded by the largest tropical forest reserve in Mexico, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.
