Maybachs in the West is a programme devoted to the Class 52 'Western' diesel-hydraulics principally on the main line in the West Country from Bristol to Penzance, following the only main line registered 'Western,' D1015 Western Champion during the years 2005 - 2017.

I think the Westerns, Deltics and Warships if not the best were certainly the most charismatic of the first generation diesels. All aesthetically pleasing and they all sounded great.

1034 Western Dragoon - the only loco I ever drove, The run down from Bedwyn to Woodborough and around the curve at Edington, through Cogload Jcn a beautiful sight and sound this class. They used to do the old Golden Hind in 100 mins to Taunton on a good day with OOC or Reading crew, sadly it was rostered to Exeter and they were a shade more cautious on the approach to Reading. Full of character unlike the faceless and souless HST and now the insanely bumpy Hitachi, Now I go to Honiton and the comfort there makes up for the slower journey.

What a superb compilation of the diesel hydraulic traction of the West, notably D1015 Western Champion, what a pity RU-vid have to spoil it,by bombarding the viewer, with endless adverts for tat, right in the middle of a runpast.

I do enjoy the 52s very much. Nothing sounds like a growling gurgling Maybach. Such a distinctive sound. Great footage of the hydraulics. We here in California are working on getting the only diesel hydraulic loco in the Americas going again. It's Southern Pacific 9010, and of course, she is powered by a Maybach. Can't wait until we can enjoy those sweet sounds over here!

I'm not a great train fan, but the 52 Westerns hold a lot of nostalgia for me. Plus the fact that they are as streamlined as a brick, gives the impression that they brush away any air resistance with the contempt that it deserves. Love this loco and this upload, thank you.

Those westerns are like an old friend to me, i was a spotter in the middle 60s as a young lad. I was truely gutted when they started scrapping them. But watching this brings back so many happy memories.

Great stuff. Brought back childhood memories of getting up early to spot the “milk” train from Bristol to Salisbury. Usually a Western, but sometimes a Warship. I recall all the other class names now from that era - Brush, Deltic, Crompton, Hymek, Bug...

Still shocks me to see these buggers going so slow with just 4 coaches. I've lovely memories of these monsters nailing the gradient out of Severn Tunnel at 90mph with 10+ coaches. I cabbed nearly all of them at STJ's engine shed ( including the Queen, a.k.a. " Western Rustbox " ). Of course, this was in the day when sitting on Caldicot's Station Road bridge and wandering around an engine depot ( as 10 year olds ) wasn't considered an appalling violation of Health and Safety.....ah blissful times!!

Used to go round Hither Green in school uniform at lunchtime. I was 29(. Only joking!) used to ask the foreman “ ok to look around?” Come and see when you’re finished lads” he’d say. No hi vis , cromptons in bits everywhere diesel on the floor. No one gave a shit! Brilliant. Used to do old oak regular. Never got even looked at.

31:10 really is spectacular. I lived and worked In Dartmouth in the 90s, mostly prior to a lot of diesel traction coming that far. I worked at the Dart Marina Hotel, opposite the crossing in the distance. But of course it never got old seeing the steam trains going past and their whistles echoing up the River Dart

I find it so calming and relaxing watching these magnificent engines. I wonder if all of the trains had been kept in such pristine condition with all of the rolling stock would they all be still on the mainlines and in service rather than all of these soulless and ugly electric trains of today! It was always great to see all of the carriages and then all of the cars on the trains at the back.

I’d seen these in BR literature as a kid and often wondered what happened to the westerns hymeks and warships. Being in the LMR we never got to see many of these magnificent engines, and for years I thought they’d all passed under the cutters torch. Highly delighted to see and hear these lovely specimens still extant. It’s a real and gratifying pleasure for which I owe the channel owner my heartfelt thanks 🙏

Yes, but only as special 'charter' trains (ones not on the scheduled daily timetable), and also on 'Heritage Railways' (lines not in the existing network). So these diesels no longer provide regular services on the rail network but are used as 'one off special occasion charters', and on lines that are not under the control of Network Rail (the organisation responsible for travel maintenance of the network).

Hello. I have done as you said, and taken down all of my videos using your sound, my Class 35, 41, 42, 43 and 52 videos. That is all that used them to my knowledge, though there may be others, which I will take down as soon as I find them, but I am pretty sure no other videos use your sound. If you happen to stumble into any more videos of mine with your sound, could you please drop me a comment saying so and I'll get the video down as soon as possible. Also, any chance you could retract the takedown on the 52 video? That specific version of that video will not be going public again, but I'd like to have the strike removed. Thanks for reading, and I assure you, I'll be sure to not use your videos again for sound. Apologies that I did that in the first place, and a big thanks for teaching me a valuable lesson 😀 All the best, Luke
