You can't give 100% to your work and also give 100% to your family and also give 100% to your hobbies. You only have 100% so you gotta be careful. You gotta leave something on the table. I've tried to give 100% to everything I do and end up giving 0% to everything because it is too overwhelming. Interesting concept. Thanks Jocko!
@Danko Kapitan I'm talking in terms of linear time and not effort. I give myself 8 hours a day to be alone to relax or sleep and get away. That leaves about 65% of the day for other things. I get it if you have an emergency and need to work 36 hours straight or something but the down time recharges you so that you are able to give 100% when needed.
God who exists beyond time gets around that by allowing each person paralel lives, so if you missed out... don't worry, you actually didn't. I've actually seen one of my paralel lives, i'm a friend of this girl i never got a chance to date, she was my elementary school crush, it wasn't nearly as shocking as i imagined, it was more like, yeah actually this makes sense...cause I love her so much and I decided in another direction, love doesn't have limits like we think but seems to for immersions sake.
I think you can absolutely give 100% effort towards all of those things they may not be 100% compared to the 100% you give if that’s all you focus on. The key is 100% effort for all endeavors
You can give 100% to each of those things, but not at the same time. “Balance” is going all in on whatever your task at hand is. Its all about how much time is allocated to each thing. So the limiter is how much time you have. So i only care about a few things. I go all in on work from 6am to 3pm. Then i go all in on learning for the next hour. Then i go all in on spending top quality time with my family etc. This isn’t a hard and fast schedule but going all in on one thing at a time is essential. If im home with my family and kinda spending time with them, kinda checking work emails on my phone, paying a little attention to the book im reading…. Then i fail at everything.
Only way for you to know he's smart is by you being smarter than him. I always laugh when a d... person rates anothet persons intellect.. no way for any of you Jocko fans to know.
yeah, listening to older clips i could tell that topics in academia completely missed him, e.g., thinking book smart people talk about philosophy with each other. It's nice to see him branching out.
The dude is a friend of, and has been on, the Dave Ramsey show, a conservative personal finance show Good information there about finances and lots of use of the word "ROI" so much that's all you can think about it's lost all meaning
“On the way to discovering what we love, we will find everything we hate, everything that blocks our path to what we desire.” - Waking life you never end up where you intend to go in life. Unless you find what you hate first... -then it gets easier to see the path forward
My grandfather sat me down when I was 18 and told me “you can’t do everything” and that really pissed me off because I thought I could but you can’t. You have to make sacrifices.
Money is a abstract representation of value. Money makes money. Once you have enough money... The money matters less... When you have no money the money really seems to matter... But it’s not really money that is lacking. It’s that value is absent. Time is existence. Each of us only has a limited amount of time. Prioritize your needs and develop assets. Developing actual value and chasing purpose creates a strong vibrant life. There is a relationship between creating value and having value... That results in wealth development. Don’t chase money. Develop value and the money comes to you. And if the money does not appear... You don’t really notice because you have value. If there is a famine and the stores are all closed... And one person has some potatoes and chickens and another person has cash and gold... Who has value? Each situation is different and so cover the needs and create a comprehensive nest egg that has value... And everything takes care of itself in time.
S.W.O.T. It…list the strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats…do the strengths and opportunities outweigh the weakness and threats. I learned this and Tryn to use it in my life. Thx Jocko and crew! I appreciate y’all…Emma out!
Great advice. I think a lot of people struggle to choose the things they will not do. That combined with making “being busy” a badge of honour ends up being a recipe for no balance in life.
As always, Jocko & Echo Charles are right on... one other aspect to consider with trade-offs is that you can shift the percentage of time for each over time...Jocko mentions this with the focus on his SEAL team while on active duty vs now, but this is a key point...periodically one aspect of your life may demand more than the rest and to maintain healthy relationships, just-in-time skills, health, and income/vocation/avocation, the ability to pivot and recognize when to do so and to what extent is key.
Great video! Care about less, and gain more of what you really want. Many things people are into may be detracting from the things they really care about.
Being a good agent includes communication of exactly what that agent told you! Glad you were in good hands! If you need a Florida Agnet, lmk!! Nice message!
I love jocko always has positive words of encouragement and gives genuine advice at times of need for some people.. I'm thankful to be able to watch these movies he such a good guy and i love watching all his success..
My four things.... 1- Family 2- My purpose (inspiring people to eat less dead animal body parts) 3- Health + Fitness 4- Self-Development Thank you for the reflection on this
Nice thumbnail. Three rules of real estate: location, location, location Life is really simple we just make it complex. SOmetimes a "better half" is a worthy resource. I found we can do things together that I could never do alone. Dad was big on making a list. We do this when there is an abundance of options. Yes, and prioritize, weight, evaluate. It is a tool. Econ 101 Guns & butter. 4 things? Love of God, country(world), self, family Dedicate-ed to service (with a smile, would you like fries with that?) Attitude of gratitude - PMA Positive mental attitude. Ever changing priorities - learn to juggle (whatever we do we do with passion, little things count) Try to not make it worse. I like process improvement. Knowing it (our work and love life) will never be perfect we accept that grace which we are given - and try to pass it on. Love you guys. I got projects - not just for me. When we left our billet in Japan I remember cleaning the house - It was in better condition than when we moved in. Treat people this way too. I am not sure but think they were going to turn it back to the locals and it would be torn down. This is not important. It happens eventually. Sill the future does not prohibit us from doing our best today, every day. There are some words in the Bible - for example that don't or for me didn't make any sense until I got older and have been through the valley. Now some of it makes sense, I say wait for it. If it was meant to be it will come to pass. FYI: The Lord answers prayers, sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes unfortunately it is no and then (here is a biggie I learned from a friend) the answer may be "Not yet." Some things need to be earned. As it should be. In my old age I am trying to figure out why you all fight so hard for fame and fortune. It might be the difference between climbing the mountain, sitting at the summit and coasting down the other side. End game is the same what did we leave in our wake? Net good, I hope so.
From the conan books regarding the god he worships" Their chief is Crom. He dwells on a great mountain. What use to call on him? Little he cares if men live or die. Better to be silent than to call his attention to you; he will send you dooms, not fortune! He is grim and loveless, but at birth he breathes power to strive and slay into a man's soul. What else shall men ask of the gods? Simply said you have everything
Love this podcast. Thank you guys for the constant iron sharpening iron. I haven't read Sowell's book, so I don't know the broader context of this "there are no solutions, only tradeoffs" quote... but the way you position this quote is a horrible summation of modern life & economics. There are many legitimate solutions that show that economics is not a zero-sum game. People can produce exponential breakthroughs (solutions) that make the economic pie bigger for everyone (steam engine, electricity, writing systems, computers, etc etc etc). There was an age when humans thought of economics as a zero-sum game where for one aristocrat to get richer, he had to make others poorer; or for one country to get richer, they had to invade another to gain land and resources (many references on this: Harari's book Sapiens is one). I could provide many examples as to why positioning this quote as a truism of life and economics is a horrible teaching. Successful entrepreneurs and leaders absolutely work with others and themselves to create legitimate solutions that benefit humanity. Finding these solutions is what separates someone worth $20/hr economically from someone who is worth $20,000/hr. And people who master a balanced life find similar solutions outside of business. Please consider seriously clarifying your message on this. Thanks!
To the title: I don't want everything, I already have everything. 3:21 Jocko's right though. Life is full of surprises, we can appreciate that while there's things on the table that we would love to have , there's a cost to those things and that if you ignore that you're going to cut yourself short. Pay attention to your life decisions and make the best with what you have... What do you value the most?
Not everyone knows what they want to do. Some people have more than one passion that tear them in different directions. Some have no passion for anything in particular. Many just want to get Iaid. What to do
You can! What you have to give up to focus on all those things are mountains of achievements or mountains of excellence. You spread those out amongst others, and we all broaden our focus and achieve less and be less excellent. And we layer the profits of our many dynamic and balanced ways upon each other. There's enough people doing 12 hours a day for $2/hr and 7 days a week and enough people hungry and thirsty and untapped that this must be true. Because if we're all treading narrow paths at greater expenses, trapping them in those emptier worlds, presumably we could balance out and spread out the capacity.
thomas sowell is a great scholar who is not worn down, weak, biased or, woke type stuff. there is alot of vids of him and his stuuf here. his books i have a couple and plan to buy more. thing is most arent like $12 some are bout $30 if startbuing some would add up and they are alot of reading / things to take in. i already have too many books need to properly read. will put more thomas sowell books in my library after read more books already have and it works put. dosent surprise me jacko sees and respects thomas s.
I try to explain to my customers that the ROI on solar is excellent if you do your own install. That’s my businesses main focus. I do the design and provide all the materials and then provide technical support for them to install their own solar. The business is northwest Independence, name Tim Burke. I also make batteries.
There are solutions sometimes. Tradeoffs are similar to opportunity cost. It all depends on the situation and as you mature you gain clarity on the difference. Sometimes solutions are a product of dedication and intensity, sometimes tradeoffs are gravity. Oh and you can focus on family, God, Job and self improvement. Its called the grind, its called life, its called attacking until you cant. Balance is about doing all you can in the important directions the best you can and keep showing up when sometimes thats all you can do. With all that said, it can’t be all goal driven. Sometimes doing things that only yield self gratification are a balance thats needed to keep showing up. That means if i want to watch a ballgame- guess what, thats going to help me show up when it counts. Balance, balance, balance. It cant be all rigor.
That’s how I bough my house, made a list of the top 3 things we had to have, everything else I could work on or wasn’t that important. Here was my list. 1. Had to have 4 rooms 2. Had to have a yard for my boys 3. Had to have two bathrooms 😂😂😂
So pertinent to this video... Some teachings of Christ Matthew 6:19 - 24 [19] Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, (ESV) Matthew 6:20 [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33#But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34#“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Aha! this is my big thing. You can only focus on one thing at a time. Most things in life worth working for require periods of concentrated effort. Balance is not a goal, it is a tightroap, the tip of a peak. Balance is only ever momentary. But I believe you can put all the pieces of a great life together in a fairly short period of time through the process of elimination, Research, developement and Innovation. Once you have it all in place, everything requires maintenance. You name it ... Freedom, heatlh and fitness, financial independence, love and the pursuit of happiness. It all takes work, one step at a time, day in day out.
If you enjoy topics about mastery and masculinity, I invite you to explore the videos on the Mastery Order Channel. Challenge yourself with some ideas about manhood, explore your masculine potential to the maximum and become the kind of man you would admire. We can only better ourselves together, as men among men, so I invite you to use what I share and, of course, share your own thoughts so that others can also benefit from them. All the best to you!
Priorities should be taken seriously but not to the point where you're almost a total killjoy like a lot of people I've known. A very big caveat is that if you take one or two priorities too seriously you can't fully utilize the leverage that you've built on another priority. But if every opportunity around you is dumbed down then you can afford to be a bit of a killjoy, though not to the extent of your mind introspectively imploring to find other opportunities. Also taking into consideration the current opportunities that you are uptaking.
Maybe its because I grew up on a farm, 20 miles from a decent sized town, and that meant I had to do without if I could not make it myself. I have never been able to put 100% into anything, always had to divide up my day and try to make enough time to do important stuff. Wrestling probably helped with that too, because that added more things to fit into a day, along with deciding what I could eat and still make weight. Prioritizing things has been my modus operandi since I was a small kid in he 1970s.. which was not a good time to live on a farm. I like to take raw material and make it what I want it to be. Rusty old cars that are rolling shells not even good enough to be a parts car? Yeah thats a builder to me. 13 acres of woodland with a run down cabin that was unlivable and only had one narrow 300foot driveway cleared? Yeah, that is where I wanted to live. I had to clear 3 acres of trees to build my house and shop, along with the parking I needed for the old cars. I can't afford to pay someone to do it, so I did it. In 2007 I couldn't afford to pay for $5 gasoline to feed my old cars, or even cheap newer ones that got 35mpg, not on VA disability compensation anyway. So I learned how to make ethanol/vodka and how to not only make my vehicles run on it, but get better mileage than they can on gasoline. 40 cents a gallon and a couple weeks worth of work vs $5 a gallon means I can drive some really crazy high powered stuff all summer. I have traded hours for both dollars and experience, investing both in something tangible, real, and useful.
You had to clear 3 acres of trees. Wow what a disaster. I bet the place was beautiful and home to so much wildlife before you ruined it for your own selfish gain
@@deanfowles3707 I see you are not overly encumbered with intellect, but there are ten other acres of trees on my land, and they are surrounded by about 300 miles of trees. Its called a forest, you city people should go find one sometime so you can see what its like. The only wildlife that have been eradicated to a large extent are mosquitoes and ticks, which are a problem for the other wildlife, other than the spiders which I help as much as I can. The fogs were moved and I am building them a much larger pond to live in this year, they'll have plenty of food and every spring the peepers will come out. I leave the standing dead trees for the squirrels, and I make sure they can get around to all the seed bearing trees without touching the ground. Danger is on the ground for squirrels. Then you have the bears, wolves, a couple mountain lions that stroll through from time to time, wild turkeys, ducks, coyotes, rabbits, deer, and several different types of non venomous snakes that are here with me. They live with me, and are most welcome to stay here and forage. I have humming birds and bats here too, dragonflies, and all sorts of other interesting wildlife. Since I like the birds, I've been thinking of a bird feeder where the squirrels won't become dependent on it (something you can't comprehend I am sure, since you are dependent) so I can make friends with them like I have the hummingbirds. You city people just don't get it, probably because you assume everyone is as ignorant and self absorbed as you are. Do us all a favor and do not come out of your fenceless pen where everything is provided for you by someone else, because you will only screw things up. Like the kid who was going to rough it alone in Alaska and ended up not surviving it when he was only half a mile from civilization.. that is the type you city people are. Stay there...
