Today's recording is Billy Mayerl's Three Japanese Pictures, Op.25. One of the few Mayterl pieces sporing an opuys number, this set was written in 1930 and bears the dedication "To my friend Bobby Howes".
Initially I had my eyes only on "Almond Blossom" - one of these elegant and gorgeous Mayerl "blossom" pieces. The other two pieces did not much appeal to me. But I thought that after my previous recording of Stevenson's Chinese Folk Song Suite, it would be nice to follow with something Japanese - even if it's merely some slight Japonaiserie which does not sound particularly eastern. Also I'm a completist, and I like the cover of this little set. Soon I did warm to the other two pieces - even on auto-pilot, Mayerl's music is never less than entertaining.
