They got me a match against Don Maloney of OK a few days later they told me he went and got himself killed. March 27, 87 finally went into a guy by the name of K Allen (4x winner) of Tenn. we won 34 yrs ago tonight! Male Best of Show Thank you Eddie Torres of Pharr, my mentor and man who showed me how to condition. After that match I had offers to condition from Japan and men up north. Cant believe 34 yrs has passed : thank you B Smith, B Clayton, Weldon, D Burton, R Holt, Boudreaux, B Hall, especially my mentors M. Flores/SA and E Torres/Pharr we'll meet again and drink Crown Royal , Chivas Regal and miller beer .. best time of my life

Gary Hammond knows his shit. Much more of the science of breeding than Mayfield. Many more than 2 Hammond's dogs were matched and Mayfield would know that with his being in the "in crowd." So this sounds like an attack on Gary based sour grapes and a personal bitch with the man. Sadly, and many great dog men has said this, there are a lot of dog men who were backbiters, and would not give credit for another man's accomplishments or would try to take that credit for himself. Even one of the greatest all time dogmen, Earl Tudor complained of the game not giving him credit for his lifetime work of creating the greatest dogs of his time. Mayfield himself is one of those who quote Tudor as saying this. I wonder if ole Earl meant Mayfield was one. I think Mayfield was a deeply flawed man in some ways, but I do not even suggest to say that he was anything other than a first rate dogman, and a top conditioner.
Zigz Zagz I can’t even read all the garbage you typed after the second sentence. Don Mayfield was one of the best at conditioning dogs in the whole recorded history of the breed. He was a liar, a thief, a paper hanger and a half ass breeder but if you matched into him.. you were probably going to lose on conditioning and handling alone. He could win with a dog that wasn’t half as good as his opponents and that’s a well known fact. I know Gary and I knew Don and so did a lot of us that were actually around the game back then and what Don said about Gary is the one hundred percent truth. The man can’t and never could condition a dog because he never matched dogs. He breeds decent dogs for hog hunting and now he’s a conformation Judge. Get your shit straight or stfu.
I knew both men I seen don do some dogs when I was young man I never saw Gary do one. A friend of mine got a dog from Gary once and dog didn’t work out. I’ve been out to Gary’s many times good ole guy. But I’d rather had had don work a dog.

I agree ,But there is not enough knowkedge out there I had a great dog as a kid 15-16 years old and he quite once , thought I had a cut dog ,My grandpa said that dog is game as the come and smart as hell ,But you have him fat and water logged , He went about 45 minutes in a hog hunt,then just stood the line ,So My grandpa took the dog for about 2-3 months ,Then we took him on anoth hog hunt ,And that dude hunted for almost 2 and a Half hours,stoping the hog,he did that 3 more times ,You could not stop that dog from hunting ,So he didn't quite,I did ,shit if you can't stand up cause you can't walk a half mile cause ya smoke so much ,you can only give wat you have

Chris Hatcher man I kind of hate to agree with you but I can honestly say if I had a choice between the knowledge or a dog from either of these two men it would be Don M. 10 out of 10 times. And its just a fact that he was one of the very very best at conditioning and handling a dog. Gary has always had a yard of shiteaters no matter how nice the man is you can’t change the facts.
