Is this module for the 2nd generation (2010-2013)? If so, how did you manage to open it (to expose the underlying mechanics)? Thanks!

Yes 2010 4 screws and gently pry it apart.

By looking at your second show after you got it to work, it appears off camera you figured out the cam on the black part has to be in timing with the slop on the worm gear on the motor so it can freewheel when the motor parks at rest open or rest closed. In this case someone might have forced the latch as the motor was moving the parts, or the small electric motor was burnt up. At any rate the system seems really cheaply made. And because its difficult to use an aftermarket motor with a cable type system Mazda wants an arm and leg for new parts. Another fine overpriced factory piece of junk. The key here is do not touch your lock wile your making it move electronicly or you'll break it. I'll bet its a 2 dollar motor and 130.00 dollar part. Add 100 to 200 for the dealership to change it your at about 350.00 repair bill. Just to replace a power door lock motor because this usually is not a diy project. Most your modern cars door panels take a bit of knologe to take apart. Some of them can be hard to figure out.

Get mine out of order at 11 PM in the night. All the car refused to open ... even with the key, impossible to open. It have been a nightmare to open the car without broken a window. All it very well designed to avoid any thief succeed go inside, and in the same time nothing is plane to have an access to unlock the door striker from the inside even removing the door trim. I spent 3 hours to unlock the door. It just a non sense. I have open this part myself. The only things available are not usefull to repair the problem. I succeed to unlock it, but the striker still have a problem. There is nothing to repair. It have been designed like toys from the 80's. I think the plastic part slowly worn on the edge and gears can jumps to a wrong position. Such problem can really have a hi cost at the end. Even on critical parts like this they try to save few cents... really tired with news cars generation.
