There's a brand new electric vehicle in the small SUV segment. The Mazda MX-30 builds on the mild hybrid currently on offer to bring a full electric electric vehicle with a range of around 200km (WLTP). It uses a 35.5kWh battery, offers AC charging and also offers fast DC charging at a rate of 50kW.
Paul Maric tests out the 2021 Mazda MX-30 Electric Astina to see if it's any good and whether it offers a compelling option against the other vehicles in this segment.

I'm actually surprised Mazda even bothered to sell this here in Australia - $65,000 is just far too expensive for an electric car like this.
@arminshah1810
@arminshah1810 2 года назад
It's starts from €30 000 in Belgium still took the CX30 because the range on this car is actual garbage, if you take the high way you prob have a range of 150 km which is nothing and let's not talk about the back seat space, you can fit a bag or 2 there and thats about it

Isnt Tesla working on a baby model which should land around $50,000 in Australia?
@kingprone7846
@kingprone7846 2 года назад
indeed. Even in europe (i live in Aus now) this is pathetic proposition. Not because i.e. a Tesla is a better choice but because you have a 65k AUD/ 40k euro car but because at that level you can get some very nice luxury sedans already. the car performs very poorly as an EV i.e. even though Teslas are relatively expensive they have a few tricks i.e. long range, great performance, OTA updates all which make them a very interesting proposition when compared to i.e. buying a high speced 3 series. This car is just.... doing nothing. Like I think it would be an interesting car at maybe 30-35k AUD. Like... for 65k AUD you can get a high speced audi a3 sedan. brand new. And thats a european car which has a high markup here............
@kingprone7846
@kingprone7846 2 года назад
@@peoplelikeus3684 yep they are. But i dont think it will fare well here. Australians enjoy big cars, noone wants to drive smaller hatchbacks like in europe - not even melbournians/sydneyians. My Model 3 is not a small car. It would be considered huge in the UK and average to biggish in germany. In Australia I feel like driving a tiny compact sedan next to all the other cars here. It actually looks really sporty because of that.
@petrkubena
@petrkubena 2 года назад
@@kingprone7846 If you would argue against it based on range then sure - it's 2015 level. But comparing it to ICE sedans and arguing there are better is IMO misguided. CX-30 is very close in terms of price (25-40k EUR CX-30 and 32-40k MX-30) and features to MX-30 here in EU and it was very well received. Realistically - give me the promised range extender and I will buy this one.

A section of this video with a calculation of how long does it take for the additional cost of a electric vehicle to pay it self off in fuel saving would be very valid for this and future electric vehicle reviews. Agreed! EVs always have some ridiculous avante garde design philosophy, it's refreshing to see something different here. On the subject of engine noises, I would want them. In fact, given it's fake, why not have some more fun with them? For eg let the driver select from a number of alternative engine sounds. There's a reason why so many people are fans of driving games and why certain car enthusiasts with regular gasoline engines go thru the trouble of adding components to their vehicles to change the way they sound during operation.

There are no compliance requirements in Australia. Mazda could sell nothing but V8s here if they wanted to. I think they really think there’s a little niche market for these, and they are probably right. Good little car for inner city cashed up fashion types.

My understanding is that compliance cars are by definition versions or models specifically designed to meet local regulations and sold in those areas, outside of which the manufacturer would sell other models. The MX-30 does not meet this definition of compliance car.

Yes we paid extra for 3 colors (the blue/grey) version, and we have the white/grey seats not those awful brown and black. Love it. But we are two people in our early 60's, so we won't use the back seats at all, and we don't drive long distances with it. If we need to do that we have a diesel MB. So it's good as a second car.

I am curious, since I bought an MX-30 in Italy some 3 months ago: are the steps for the regen/power level actually 3 in the Australian model? Because mine has 5, from 2 arrows down to 2 arrows up. It could totally be that they moved to 3 steps, because one could feel the 5 levels are somewhat redundant, and 3 might make more sense. As for power consumption, in my daily trip to work and back the car reports less than 14 kWh/100km going and less than 16 kWh/100km coming back, 60 km in total, and me wondering if the difference is due to the 50 m difference in height from sea level, or traffic conditions, or me being more awake in the evening going home than in the morning going to work... This in summer, essentially flat, and, I don't want to say country roads, since country roads in Lombardy are probably not what Australians or Americans think when they hear it, sub-urban maybe? If I check the actual charges, which should include recharging inefficiencies if present, I consume 10..11 kWh for the roundtrip, which means something from 16,7 to 18,3 kWh/100km.
@soijiro666
@soijiro666 8 месяцев назад
and what about the total range?
@ThePinkus
@ThePinkus 8 месяцев назад
@@soijiro666 The pure EV version of this car (there is now one with an extended combustion engine) is designed with a relatively small battery, thus it is very important to consider if the limited range fits how one is going to use it. If it's relatively short range commuting it is perfect, otherwise it is not and one should probably consider other cars to deal with longer range trips. Really, the battery is not designed for that. Comfort is quite fine, the car would be all right, it's just the limit in the battery. My 2021/5 European model, at 90% charging, assures me 130 km and the margin that leaves it comfortable to drive with no concern, in a suburban/country paved-road cycle, essentially flat, even in winter. The reason I consider the 130 km mark is very personal, as it is twice my home-work-and-back daily trip, which means I am covered if I forgot to plug it in in the evening. Because this happens... Another design limit should apply mostly just in Germany, because the top speed is nominally 140 km/h (147 km/h according to the display) and in most countries one should not go more than that, actually not even at that speed.

I picket up my MX-30 in March and I have daily-ed it, taken trips in and I have put up to the tune of 6500 KM. My opinion on the car is its very comfortable got all the bells and whistles I need including more I was not disappointed My only bad critique is the range and I think this is effect all brands and EV cars, is not providing real world range figures in my country (Ireland) a lot of driving is commuting is motorway and the speed limit is 120Kmph, doing this speed with 100% battery will get you about 120KM to 110KM range before you start to worry about where is the closest charger. I also and struggling to keep the inside clean, this the first car I have, not idea why but it attracts mud and dirt marks. and the touch screen in the center is nearly useless I just use the buttons that do the same thing thing as the touch screen allows you do, I think the touch could be better used as an add-on to the media center. I mainly live on Public chargers because my apartment block does not allow charging, this dose not bother me a whole lot, public charging is still cheap at the very most I have spent in one charge is € 5 from 10% to 80%, but it depends on your local KW rate. The advertise that the car will charge fully in 30 mins, I have been using CSS 50KW chargers and 150KW CSS chargers they all depend on how low you drive the car down to, I get a quicker charger from 10% to 80% than I do from 50% to 80% no Idea why this is the case so I usually run the car down to about 20% then go for a charge. I would say the slower your journey the more range you will have.

The range would be fine for me as a daily driver. I normally drive less than 100 km a day and charging over night or when parking at the office. But is a little small. Our current cars are a CX-5 and the CX-8. My dream electric Mazda would something in the size of these cars, with a range of about 300 km and the rotary range extender for long journeys or as a backup in case you cannot charge. We are living in Thailand where the charging infrastructure is still not good and fast charging is only up to 50 kW. But 300 km would be fine for 95% of our trips.
@lamborghini0610
@lamborghini0610 2 года назад
@ You need to understand that quoted range will never be achieved in real life. Tesla claim 600km+ on my Model 3 performance, when in reality I get 450km with my driving style. If Mazda claim 200km, don't expect more than 150km. Also even if that is suitable, this thing is 65K! It makes no sense to buy it.
2 года назад
@@lamborghini0610 I know that - but range is overrated in most conditions. In Europe, the average daily driven distance is about 55 km. My daily distance is less than 100 km and I could charge at home or where I am working. So this Mazda would be fine for 99% my drives. The problem in Thailand is, that imported cars cost twice as much as in the USA or Europe. The only exception is the MG ZS EV. I hope this will change within the next years.

Despite the negativity being shown, here are some positive points. Made in Japan, still the best quality. Chinese made is still barely acceptable no matter what improvement Tesla has gained( shows how badly they were previously assembled.) Plus long term durability is unproven. The noise is actually for pedestrian safety under sixty kilometres per hour. There are five steps in the regenerative braking. Depending on terrain, you can use as little as 11- 14 kWh/100 km up to 16-18 kWh/100km. Total cost traveling to Canberra and back to the South Coast depending on whether we stay a night or two is $12 to $20 with one extra recharge. If it fits your usage patterns then a very satisfactory vehicle, nice to sit in, very quiet and easy to get in and out of. Price is what you have to pay currently. The Kia EV6 is coming out at $76000

A Tesla model 3 has twice the range and costs less. Mazda is thinking it’s still 2015.

Yeah, it also only has single zone climate control. They should’ve also poached the 10.25” infotainment screen from the CX-5 and CX-9

It's not a bad thing to put a fake noise, you still driving a car though and it's can also help keep you awake ✔️

23:20 - the only noise that is required is outside so pedestrians can hear the vehicle approaching. you don't need that inside.

This has some tough competition coming in the Ioniq 5, Ev6 and Ariya. The back seat seems unacceptable for the class/price of vehicle.

I feel like there does need to be some noise from the engine of EV cars just for people's safety. Owning a hybrid I often have to beep at people cause they don't hear me coming.

I mean it's great that they didn't follow the trend of making oversized grills but that plastic cladding all around the body is just horrendous and the design of the rear bumper wouldn't really make me think it's top of the line tbh.

Another great video as per usual by you, Paul! I LOVE Mazda however you haven't sold me the MX-30 of either model which is totally fine and means you have done a great job at being honest and showing it how it is. I will stick to the other smaller SUVs Mazda makes. Agree, Mazda wants to charge a lot of money for cars that aren't proven just yet. Totally keen to buy an EV and a Mazda one at that but not just yet by the sounds of it..... Thanks for a great vid!

Actually, it’s the LAST Mazda I would buy, and that’s just based on the looks alone! I’ve been a real admirer of pretty much every Mazda exterior (and interior) design over the last 10-20 years. But this one is just plain ugly! What were Mazda thinking? And those ridiculous rear suicide doors” - why, why, why ?????? I just keep shaking my head 🤦‍♂️

I love Mazda’s and I think they’re good value (usually), but this one is just too expensive. Mazda should’ve offered lower spec models like on the regular MX-30. Also single zone climate control is ridiculous on a $65,000 car
