Kicking off the new channel name with a car make that we've never had before. Had the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF for 48 hours and got a few hours of top down driving in. It was only 50 degrees, but somehow was still comfortable with the targa top.

What are your thoughts on the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF? I was always a hater, but after driving the car, I've completely changed my mind about this car. Very fun.

Only con is the cargo capacity. Im on the waitlist for an RF as well. Perfect second car that i dont mind beating and driving like i stole it. Handling + convertible for a good price is 🔥. Better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

I can agree with that last sentence. Just something about that car was so much fun to drive. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the cargo space in the trunk. Was able to do my normal grocery shopping trip and everything fit. Barely, but it all fit. I do wish it had just a little more space on the inside. My head was in about an inch from the ceiling.

I have a 2019 RF in Fairbanks Alaska. Very reliable. Very efficient. Turns in 40 mpg. Handles deep snow and -40 without issue. Sitting in basically a cockpit, it's very warm. Couldn't be happier. Good little car.

How often do you drive with the top down up there?

@@TheCenterLineAuto Summer time, quite often. Gets hot, and it's nice. Winter time, I'll take my mom out to see the Aurora. Drop the top when parked. Thermostat is set for like 200. And the lines for the heater core come practically straight from the block. So it's very warm if you blast the heat and turn the heated seats on max. We most recently watched at -33f for 30 mins.

That’s awesome. I always wondered how a convertible would do in a place like Alaska. Maybe one day I’ll make my way up there and see for myself. I had a lot of fun with the car. A little cramped for me at 6’ tall but still really fun to drive.

@@TheCenterLineAuto Depends on your build. I'm also 6' tall. Fits me like Cinderella's slipper. Didn't adjust a thing. You should! It's worth a visit. Anywhere there's a road, there's a worthy drive.

You really didn't have trouble with deep snow with how low this sits? We just got Mazda 3 Hatch, and were worried for our first winter here in Alberta. Seeing your comment gives me hope we can drive this around with ease, with winter tires ofc.

Top down is more whimsical which I do 90% of the time. Top up makes it feel like a seriously planted sports car.

I like the look of the RF more, but yeah if performance is your primary concern, then the soft top wins. The hard top is heavier and prevents you from installing a roll bar. I have an RF tho cuz i’m not taking it to the track or anything

Ummm... I've owned both XLR and MX5. The folding mechanism of the XLR is completely different. The entire trunk lid raises and tilts down

Purchased a brand new 2017 Miata RF GT leftover in 2018 and owned it for 4.5 years. Stickered for $34,000 but I bought it for $29,000. In 2022 at the height of the used car pricing madness, I sold the car for $27,000 with only 12,000 miles on it and in flawless condition. I've owned a 2006 Mercedes SLK 280 hardtop roadster and a 2009 Audi TT-S softop roadster, both new. The Miata was as nice as the Mercedes, and more reliable than both prior roadsters, especially the Audi. I'd buy another Miata RF without hesitation.

I was initially sold on the RF but then after a little investigation, it’s the soft top for me for numerous reasons however, the RF is better looking with the roof up. Either one is great but it’s the soft top for the win.

I have installed automatic closing windows and roof via the key fob, not without difficulties though, maybe its my battery or that I choose 2 click on the key fob for booth the window and the roof?

The RF models would be way cooler if they didn't have even less storage than the soft top. Then again, storage isn't exactly what most people are looking for tiny sports cars lol

I have a 2019 RF, came from a 2014 NC and the old Miata had more room inside for sure. There’s 2 less compartments and its cramped for the passenger. No regrets buying this car tho!

I just bought a NC last month! 2015 Club PRHT. Absolutely love that car. Have the feeling I’ll be holding onto it for a very long time.

Looks like the RF starts at $37k for a new 2024 build. Personally, I’m a firm believer in buying cars that are 2-3 years old so that you don’t take a massive hit on depreciation.

Funny you mention that. I just picked up a 2015 NC with the power retractable hard top, so I get the full convertible experience with the practicality of the hard top! This ND put me onto Miata’s but the NC sold me on buying one, even though it’s the boat of the generations 😂

Only like 250lbs. Really doesn't affect the handling much unless you're a track racer and really need as much removed as possible.

@@Shaheer4771 I do agree they should be super light. But I'm glad they made it available as a hard top cause I've seen enough 8yr old soft tops falling apart. And especially in LA and SF bums with knives cut em and find a new sleeping bed. Hard top was just better for me as a daily driver and for safety. I also got the automatic so I'm definitely not a Miata Purist but as my first one I'm definitely a believer in the brand and car.

@@Shaheer4771 so glad I ditched my love for mini Coopers cause my Miata is just a joy to drive and even went off roading a weekend ago to get to a hot spring by Lone Pine, CA and there was mudslides and rain and it was exhilarating. For science you can drive 30+mph top down in the rain. Can confirm 🤣

Idk what other people are on about but the boxster has always been an awesome car. I like the Caymans myself but the new ones are just not quite as pretty as the older ones. They look like they took a little too much inspiration from the pista.
