Never before seen footage showing the assembly/start-up of our custom 4-rotor. It is the first 4-rotor since the 787b to use triple spark plugs per rotor. It is also the first since the 787 to feature telescoping intake manifold. Custom made slide throttle body system. A world first however is the use of a center main bearing and 4-piece eccentric shaft. Quick specs- 9.7:1 rotors, lightened and race clearanced. Race main bearings, and race rotor bearings, ceramic NRS 2mm apex seals. Custom stationary gears, Full custom Peripheral Port in each rotor housing (defined auto), Aluminum side housings for reduced weight. Needle roller bearing in the center housing.

let's say a 2jz gives you 100% happines....then a 13B 2rotor gives you about 150% happines......than means a 4rotor gives you the double amount of happines that means 300%. the real question is can 1man handle such an overflow of happines?

The rough iddle comes from the proting of the engine, similar effect is in heavy ported 13b and 20b engines.

Yeah it's from the porting, just look up Bridgeporting which is used for most 13B/20B tuned 7s, J-Ports are even more fun but generally not street legal

That thing is stupid in the best possible way. The sliding throttle plates, the flawlessly clean assembly, the lumpy idle. It almost deserves better than to be in a car, but then where else would you put the damn thing?

Any thoughts on builds for a rotary miata? Very interested in doing this but not sure of the cost/machine work required to get it to fit to the drivetrain

It has forged pistons and it is stroked and bored to be a 7.3 L. They also did a fuel conversion to diesel (not sure why they didn't just put a Powerstroke in it). it makes over 300 horsepower to the seatbelts but it only makes 200 ftlbs. it will do 0-60 in 20 feet in 3rd gear.

When I took small engine mechanics in high school we got a book that showed the 4 cycle and 2 cycle piston conventional engines in the manual. There was a very short piece on the Wankel engine design when I was in school in 1977 but there was only the combustion cycle of the rotor and the gear that it rotated around but nothing else. I'm like WTF how does the rotor transfers the rotor energy into the output shaft. Those books where crude then but showing this build is OK I get it. Thanks for the video man.

Honestly a 4-rotor is very advanced stuff to build. There is no manual, all parts are custom, and you must be very very well versed with rotary engines. I would start by building a two rotor and then carefully plan a build with 4-rotors. We sell 4-rotor engines complete starting at $35k. Parts only will still shock you, since everything is custom.

Just to add some more info, the balancer will spin very slow at first and if the un-balance is detected it will stop automatically. Once the material removed and balance is within a few grams it will spin all the way up to 600 or so RPM. So nothing bad can ever happen, short of a bob weight coming loose!

Like any motor, all the hard work was done off-camera. What is being watched is basically installing pistons and bolting on heads in a conventional motor. All the machine work, and small part fitting/assembly was already done. The whole thing, from start to finish....... maybe 40 hours.

Alot of steps are skipped in the editing. But no not alot of lube is needed. This is a external drysump engine which means after assembly you can pump oil through the whole motor without even rotating it. No need for lots of assembly lube :)

We have the specs on the Mazda version, but this couldn't use them because of the rpm range difference 9k vs 12k. I wanted a simple system as well, which uses servos vs. the window style motors mazda used.

Shooting for 800hp and about 440ft-lbs at the crank. Do a search on the 787b, it went 24hrs without breaking a sweat. Naturally aspirated rotaries do not have apex seal problems and will virtually never break.

Similar in some ways (both 4-rotor, P-port, same size engine). This is three plugs per housing, different port timing, 5th main bearing, slide throttle, variable intake and higher rpm capacity.

Well Said. Many people do not understand the difference between production engines and custom race engines. Power/weight/size/reliability to cost ratio of this motor is hard to match.

Its cool. All rotaries have two plugs per rotor, but this is the 1st since 1991 to feature three per housing. It is also the one and only ever to have 5 main bearings vs. the standard 4.

The are OEM mazda housings, but the triple plug insert and P-port are CNC custom made and Pressed in without welding. This makes a very factory look.

In a rotary, the compression dish is needed for the flame front to push on. If the dish gets too shallow (above about 10:1) the power will get reduced.

I use a C+R competition radiator, 4 row, 4" thick core. Never gets over 180F. A lot of magic cooling techniques in the engine itself as well.

The 4-rotor uses the same size rotor/housing as a 13b. Which is why they call the 4-rotor 26b, as it displaces 2.6 liters, exactly double a 13b.

Hard to say on miles since it will be a racetrack engine. With ceramic seals it will take a very very long time to wear anything out.

This one is 267lbs motor only, and 325lbs fully dressed with intake/exhaust/accessories. That is 50lbs lighter than a normal.

Two power strokes, actually. You have to compare crank revolution to e-shaft revolution, not to the rotor. A single-rotor engine would need 3 revolutions for each side to have had its four cycles complete, therefore in two revolutions you get two out of three combustion cycles for any given rotor. It gives the amount of power pulses per revolution that a two-stroke gives, but with four cycles occuring one after the other.

What a great and unique sound! Every time I'm anticipating a gear shift or a bounce on the limiter, the revs just keep going higher and higher...being unfamiliar with rotary engines, it's actually shocking to hear this engine wind up...I LOVE it! If Paul Bunyan carried a giant chainsaw instead of an axe, I think this is what it would sound like...

The people at Defined Autoworks are a family, and it saddens me that I have to post this news. Logans father Ken Carswell passed away on the 21st of February (this Friday). Ken was Logan’s father and inspiration, he worked on Mazda’s for 35 years. So join me in giving Logan our deepest sympathy as he and his family deal with his father’s passing.

low pressuere turbo sistems are know from the age of first turbo saabs an it means turbo charging with as less as 5-7 psi:)on a newer turbo desing and 2.6lrotory engine that means no lag at all..still reusing around 60-70% from the exhaust energy that you would just waste without a turbo and alot better milige:)saying that n/a is the better engine configuration just says how less you know about engines, efficiency and technology:)I mean if i'm building such an engine i'd go turbo no mather what

ALL of that is all true, BUT your talking about a rotary here... :( not just one or two but FOUR. A FOUR ROTOR. I bet a centrifuge supercharged v8 lsx is more reliable than this thing and wouldn't burn oil. Better yet a 7.0l+ na v8 would probably be just as well. Idk man. I guess its all relative with high end racing engines because they all are typically going to have relatively short lives.
