MBARI's Top 10 deep-sea animals

The deep sea-Earth's largest habitat-is home to a host of magical and mysterious animals. As we help our education and conservation partners at the Monterey Bay Aquarium prepare for the exhibit Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean, launching in 2022, they were curious to know which denizens of the deep are our favorites? With that question in mind, we gathered five of MBARI’s finest deep-sea biologists-Shannon Johnson, Kakani Katija, George Matsumoto, Bruce Robison, and Susan von Thun-and came up with a list of ten favorites. You might be surprised to see what made our list and what makes these creatures so lovable.
For more than three decades, MBARI researchers have been exploring the deep ocean with remotely operated vehicles, discovering fascinating ways that life in the deep sea has evolved to thrive in this dark, cold world. Our ocean is vast and full of things yet unseen. Every time we set out on an expedition, we are amazed by new observations and we are excited to share ten of those discoveries with you!
Learn more about MBARI research and the incredible discoveries we've made as we explore the ocean at www.mbari.org.

I studied Oceanography in college, and did quite well in it - including a sailing exhibition related to underwater mapping, a subject I was engrossed in during my time in school. To live on this coast, first in the Channel Islands, and now here in Monterey Bay was a blessing. I will try to teach my grandson as much as I can about this beautiful planet we live on, and focus as much as possible on Oceanography. The ocean is still such a vast place, and so little explored. Thank you MBARI. I just flat love you guys, and I'll miss this beautiful place.

People have this insane idea that technology is this magic thing that doesn't depend on energy, but without modern energy, a multi-speed bicycle would still be the epitome of technology. ...and considering that, even in the United States, energy production, per-person is going _down,_ there is no way we are going anywhere. Even 'green energy' _production_ makes this problem worse as it burns, overall *_more_* traditional fuels on the back end, while providing even _less_ useable energy at its front end/output. (I as compared to just burning that fuel outright. Its a sad thing.)

They are so bizarre. There's a species of barrel eye (Rhynchohyalus natalensis), that actually has four eyes. Two that point upward and two that can see out to the side and below, giving it a 360° view of their surroundings.

@@adamhufz9790 Well I find both fascinating. I think the reason people are more interested in outer space though is the fact it's so vast we can barely comprehend it. that 95% (if that statistic is true) is nothing compared to what's possibly out there in deep space. The fact it's currently easier to track down deep sea creatures, I wish we did it more just to inspire us further though
