As a US Navy veteran, I find the whole situation appalling. Innocent sailors died. Nearly 2/3 of the ship's crew was either murdered or injured. The Israelis verified, twice, that this was an American vessel. They blocked emergency frequencies, which made it hard to radio for assistance. The USS Saratoga was initially sent to respond and protect the ship when the first attack came. After finding out the Israelis had moved off the USS Saratoga called her fighters back. Shortly after the second wave of attacks, the USS America moved in to assist. In total, I believe the attacks totaled almost an hour and a half. But it was an error, a mistake...seems like Israel still has the same issue, as we have seen day after day for the last 7 to 8 months.

By attacking the USS Liberty, Israel hoped to make it look like Egypt had attacked that ship, coercing the US into joining the fight against Egypt (Greater Israel Project). Obviously the Liberty did not intercept communications indicating they would be facing imminent attack.

Timothy Benton There have never been any congressional inquiries into this, nor JCOS inquiries. That is BS made up by a Florida judge who has been trying to peddle that tripe for several years now. There was a very abbreviated Naval Board of Inquiry (report in 10 days after the attack) which, according to sworn affidavit from the head JAG officer on it, found the attack intentional and was forced to change its conclusion and remove the crew testimony upon orders from above. Instead of trying to shill for the Hasbara programs, why don't you actually do real investigation, locate and talk to some of the survivors (some are still alive) and principals, and let the facts lead you to where they may. The US has always been a steadfast ally to Israel and have supported them even with US taxpayer dollars. Israel has never been an Ally to the US except on paper.
After all the radio aerials had been destroyed, the sailors managed to jury rig an aerial to contact the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Saratoga; fighter jets were scrambled to protect the Liberty, whilst on route to the attack a radio message from RobertMacnamara, as directed by President Johnson, to order the planes to return to the Saratoga. The Israelis knew that from that day forth, they could get away with any massacre, and America would protect them.

The question is why the Israelis would attack the ship deliberately, and that has been left out of most accounts, but what Nader is saying here is in agreement with a passage in a book by John Loftus, Secret war against the Jews, written from a sympathetic angle. He explains, as Nader does here, that the Israelis did not want their communications intercepted because they believed the US would provide their enemies with information.
I would like to know where the USS Liberty had been prior to June 8, 1967. What course had it taken a month or so before June 8 right up to the time of attack and it limping to Malta. (Malta is an interesting revealing fact all in itself. Jesuit involvement?) What sort of missions had it been on? What was its last port of harbor prior to the attack etc? I wonder if there is any more data we might discover if we knew the ship's prior history, missions & courses it took at sea? Or is this data all still top secret?
+Soteriolog In Sweden we call it "signal spying". Our Swedish vessels where listening to the Russians and was attacked several times during the cold war and sunk on International water. Liberty was recognized by the Israelis and mentioned several times on the Israeli radio traffic. Liberty recorded it and they brought the important tapes to the hearings where several Naval and airforce people wanted to retaliate in some way.
