Huge McCarthy's fan. But funny enough, I've never had any of their low proof stuff. I also think the white label bottle is only a 3yo product. I own a 6 yo store pick, the 6yo PX, the 6yo Oloroso, and have a fully rum matured barrel pick on the way. Great stuff! And the older bottles have the peat a little more integrated than the 3yo.

I need to look for more from them. I liked this bottle so I will keep my eyes open for them. Cheers!

Definitely on the band wagon. Just returned from Andalusia Distillery in Blanco, TX and they are producing some wonderful expressions. Del Bac (Hamilton) is a home town favorite and Santa Fe Distillery is also doing great work.

I need to branch out and look for different American single malts. I have Westland, Westward, Stranahan's, DelBac, Balcones, and McCarth's. That's off the top of my head. I need others. Cheers!

Love that this match up was done. Really really dig it. So happy it won out as it is much much more expensive. I just scored Solum one and have Solum 2 on order. Planning to do a vs on that and then both vs McCarthy's. I lucked out and got it for $45 before tax.

Fantastic price! You need to check back in and let me know your results on everything you do with these bottles. I had the Solum 1 and 2 back to back and have opinions on them, but I will wait to share those opinions. Cheers!

McCarthy's is one I've been wanting to try. I like the solum but feel like it's missing something, but can't think of what it could be. Another solid review as always!

Thanks. The Solum might be missing age? Maybe? Cheers!

Ive tried the McCarthy’s and it was a little too much peat. I think i prefer cereal-grain non-peated Am Single Malts like Stranahans or Deerhammer

Great matchup Peter. I really enjoy ASMs and have tried quite a few. My current prrferences are Andalusia Stryker, Spirit of Texas Pfluger, Stranahan Sherry Cask Finished, Del Bac, Balcones Cataleja IV, New Holland Zeppelin Bend, and Westland Rum Cask Finished. I have, or had, others, but these are the ones I reach for now. Cheers!

Wow. That is a good list of ASMs. I need to try some of those. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

You should try McCarthy's single barrel, cast strength. I found it easier to drink then the standard. Current one I have is at 111.2%. Great stuff.

We don't get them in AZ, but I will keep an eye out for it online. Cheers!

Terrific comparison review Peter!! I have both and prefer the Westland with the peat! I prefer the Solum edition 2! Give it a try! I like both but I go for the Westland more often! Agreed - very different! I do like the Solum for coming alive! Awesome thoughts!! Have a fabulous weekend!! Any good plans?!! Cheers to you and Mary-Bridget!! 🙂

Thank you. I have tried the Solum 1 and 2 editions back to back and like both of them. Not sure which one I like more until I try them blind. Cooking a test brisket right now for dinner tonight and prepping for a competition next month right here in Mesa Arizona.

@@whiskeyisajourney Hey set a plate please!!! Lol!! I LOVE brisket!! Delicious!! Enjoy and I hope your upcoming competition in Mesa goes super, super well - and that win first place! Hey a Solum 1 and 2 side by side comparison review would be fabulous!! Have fun this weekend!! Had Mary-Bridget tried the Solum?!! Cheers Peter!! 🙂

Hardly enough mileage with American Single Malts to voice an opinion (I did like the Stranahan's Sherry Cask). I have been trying to find a bottle of Del Bac Distillers Cut to no avail. My brother can't even find one up in Prescott. I wonder why..?!?!

My guess is that it's at the distillery and not on the shelves at stores. Just a guess.

I have a heap of Westward and Balcones. Have a couple of bottles of Westland being the American Oak & Sherry Wood. The American Oak I found very under whelming and thought the Sherry Wood was a lot better as it had more going on with it. I would grab a Westward every day of the week over pretty much anything. I thoroughly enjoy what Miles Munroe blends.

I only have 2 bottles from Westward and like both of them. I need to get more from them and see if the trend will continue. Miles is doing good things there. Cheers!

I have the 3rd and 8th editions from Westland. Have you tried the new Westward Milestone that just came out? Apparently that's supposed to be a great ASM.

I have heard great things about it, but have not seen it. Each time I go into Trevor's I keep looking for it. Hopefully I see it soon. It would be nice to get a review of it in before the end of the year. Cheers!

Do love me some Westland. Connecticut recently allowed auction sales and I picked up a couple Garryana's along with a Colere for $140 total. People seem allergic to American single malt. Which is good for a value whiskey hunter. Have not had a Solum as of yet...the srp's are high so one has to really commit to one of these bottles. I have an older bottle McCarthy's from March 2015 that's unopened. I will pop it's cork come it 10 year birthday. Til then I will have to live vicariously through your review 😆 Cheers!

Westland is expensive, but I do like everything I have had from them and I liked McCarthy's enough to look for more from them. I hope you enjoy it when you open it. Cheers!

@@whiskeyisajourney id say their pricing is a bit odd. The Garryana's for instance are around that $150 mark now in a 700ml bottle size and with a 3 year age statement with a 50% abv. I grabbed a barrel pick from Single Cask Nation that was a barrel proof (ok, only 52.3%) 9 year full ex-Sauternes cask maturation 750ml for $125. Something doesn't quite add up here! While the Garryana is good, it cannot overcome that 9 years in the barrel of the pick. Doubt their special releases will come down in price and make these more accessible to more people, unfortunately.

Battle of Portlandia! This is worth the donation alone. No Westland funk with this one, eh? Oh snarkies... a blend... I started this comment before it started... my impatience... the result?... semi fail.

I have been impressed with Westland ever since I had my first bottle. Although I need to branch out more and get other American single malts.
