Ahh, the strain of rainbows that started it all.......very difficult river to nymph fish. Unbelievable when they are on the surface.......

I have been wanting to fish the salmonfly hatch there for awhile! Agree, very hard to nymph due to the deep water and uneven river bottom.

Drakey, I love the way you fish the rivers and streams of Nor. Cal. keeping everything simple and making it look effortless. Great example of how not to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Thanks!!

@@purpledrakefishing You're welcome Purple. How do you set your split shot - between the two flies or above both. Or does it vary? Thanks!

@@patsheridan I will use split shot when I am not using a weighted nymphs, above both flies, sitting on the dropper knot above the first fly.

Lovely looking water. I hear the salmon and steelhead can't run this river due to the dams, which is a pity. I still would love to fish it next year when I visit. Is it easy enough to get a license - is there plenty pulic water?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 2 года назад
Yes, very easy to get a license online, though a California non-resident fishing license is a little expensive. There is a good stretch public water on the McCloud and in the other neighboring streams like the upper Sacramento there is a lot of public water. There is a private section on the McCloud which is below Ah di Nah. Yes, the salmon/steelhead don't make it past Redding. Just a side note, but the strain of rainbow trout that were stocked all over the world 100 years ago or so, were from the McCloud river.

@@purpledrakefishing Thanks for the information, that’s great. Yes I knew that about the rainbows and I’ve actually been doing some research on it. The river was named for a Scottish fur trapper, and his compatriot John Muir wrote an article about visiting the McCloud hatchery circa fifty years later. Presumably this is what supplied the trout of the world. One thing for sure about the price is that it will be a lot cheaper than any Scot, past or present, pays to wet a line for salmon in their homeland. I see you’ve a video on the Klamath which I believe is joined by the McCloud at some point. I’d like to fish them all at some point - hopefully you get the dams down soon and the salmon return to how they were in McCloud’s day.

Simple trick. I take the up part of the white indicator and color it with a Florence orange pen. Botoom part face the fish, is white. Can see it better especially in white water. I use airlock foam indicators

@Purple Drake is it just me, or are the McCloud and the Upper Sac very similar? In habitat, geographically and in the way they fish?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
I agree, they are very similar. Only difference to me is the water color on the McCloud has that unique blue tint. Both are southern Cascade streams that have great Oct Caddis hatches and feed into Lake Shasta (to later form the lower Sac below the lake).

As usual great video ! You get great drifts without a lot of snags. Do you have weight on the bottom ?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
Thanks Fielding--Yes, I have weight on through either split shot or weighted flies. I think the key is not to set the indicator too high when using them and when tight lining not to use too much weight.

Awesome footage, PD......I agree, McCloud is amazing waters and beautiful fish. Water flow looks pretty good. Do you know what the CFS was at...? How much time on the water did you end up spending? Did you catch them more on the RLegs or JuJu...?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
Thanks Jon--flows were perfect. I think they were at ~250cfs. I was fishing for about 4-5 hours and caught most fish on the JuJu Baetis.

Man, I was disappointed after watching that run starting at 9:12 ! I wanted that indicator to take a serious plunge or at least a small pause haha! Thanks for sharing, I'm planning on hitting up some of Northern CA this summer after seeing some of your videos. I always just drive right past it all on the East side 395 getting up North.
