PLEASE READ
This is a little bit different to my other flight videos...
On Monday 24th February 2014, a day that will go down in aviation history, S2-ACR "New Era" by Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated the last ever DC-10 passenger flight in the world! It was an enthuiast flight, doing a 1 hour scenic tour over northern Britain. & I was fortunate enough to be onboard that flight.
We were called to board at Gate 65, where we were greeted with cake & champagne by the Managing Director of Biman Airlines who then done a speech (which is included in the video!). He confirms that this is definitly the LAST EVER DC-10 passenger flight anywhere in the world. He continued to explain why they chose Birmingham as the host of the DC-10 retirement. Because as of Summer 2014 Biman will fly their new 777-300ER aircraft from Dhaka to Birmingham and onwards to New York, so they felt Birmingham was a nice way of introducing the airline to the city. Kevin the MD then joined the press & the passengers as we went out to join the aircraft!
Before boarding, a security perimeter had been set up around the aircraft and we were allowed to walk around the aircraft and take some pictures :) Some of my walk around footage is also featured in this video.
Then we finally boarded the flight which was full of press and aviation enthusiasts and took to the skies for the last time. Departing BHX's RWY15 and turning round to head northbound and climb to 26,000ft. Once airborne they did announce the flight deck doors would be open to allow us to go and have a look, however with everyone trying to get to the front they soon closed it again and waiting until we had landed again.
After just over an hour in the air we returned to Birmingham (where we had definitly attracted the attention of plenty of people) and we were then greeted by a water canon arch salute from the fire department.
A quick look in the flight deck and I was among the last 25 passengers to ever step foot off of a DC-10 ever again. A great flight, fantastic sound and very nice crew all happy to give the aircraft a warm send off.
However there were some very ignorant, stupid people (passengers I mean) on the aircraft aswell. Such as the man behind me. Who spent most of the taxi on the way out on his phone! And no sooner had the aircraft touched down (before we had vacated the runway!) you can hear him on his phone again! Because he was on his phone, he failed to hear them announce we were getting the water canon salute so you can hear his confusion at the fire engines and hear him say "It's Raining..." -_- You can hear me & others laugh at his ignorance. Very stupid, rude man!
BUT other than him everyone was in good spirits and it was a great send off to such an iconic trijet!

This is a great video which brought back many memories for me. However, I wish to correct some inaccuracies I have read in the comments section. I was a design engineer at the Douglas Aircraft Company Division (DAC) of McDonnell Douglas (McD) in Long Beach, CA in the 1980s. I worked within the DC-10/MD-11 design group during some of that period (the MD-80 group as well). I will say I am fairly familiar with the fundamental design of the aircraft, as well as being a pilot myself. This aircraft was bought new from DAC by Biman Airlines. However, it was originally constructed for a different operator (I don't recall who). When that purchase fell through, this new aircraft was put into storage until it could be sold. While in storage, when critically needed parts were needed for other DC-10s around the world and were not readily available from stock inventory, this airframe was sometimes used to "donate" parts for other aircraft in need. This is a very common practice within the military were sometimes large numbers of aircraft are grounded because they have been stripped of parts to keep others flying. When this specific aircraft was sold to Biman, it had to be brought up to flight worthy status by replacing all the removed components. This was a somewhat considerable effort, but was successfully completed by a third party contracted by DAC in Santa Barbara CA with components fabricated and supplied by DAC. When the day came to deliver the aircraft to Biman in December 1988 (I was part of the delivery team), the ground crew put a small amount of fuel in the tanks to get the plane off the ground in Santa Barbara (only a 5700 foot runway) for a very short flight to LAX. I knew I was going to be in for a takeoff treat because the plane was only carrying perhaps 8 Douglas employees, no cargo and almost zero fuel load. When the DAC delivery pilots pushed the throttles forward the plane screamed down the runway like a scalded ape and it felt like it took off nearly vertically! We were all giddy (I know I was) at the experience. I just have no words to describe what it was like to feel that level of thrust-to-weight ratio in a plane that huge. It was just a riot. In minutes we were at LAX where we filled the tanks with fuel, the galley with food, and movies to watch for our trip to Heathrow Airport, in London England. It is really eerie walking through a huge empty DC-10 at night over the ocean, let me tell you. After a couple of days in London, we left Heathrow with a full plane of revenue passengers to Dhaka, Bangladesh. The airplane was now crewed by Biman pilots, including the airline's chief pilot. I remember standing right behind him in the cockpit during the approach and landing into Dhaka (yeah yeah, I know, not standard procedure, but I had to "monitor" the situation. Hehehe) As I recall, there were *thousands* of people waiting to greet the airplane at the airport as this was the first brand new airplane Biman had ever purchased and it was a really big deal for the country of Bangladesh. There was a delivery ceremony at the airport and our job was done. We then spent a few days in Dhaka being tourists and the airline was very gracious showing us around and the chief pilot even invited us to his home. Wonderful hospitality and kindness. We then went on to Bangkok, then to Hong Kong...all a boondoggle. LOL Finally we flew to Vancouver BC then down to LAX. This whole round-the-world adventure took about something like 12-14 days. My total out of pocket cost was about nothing for souvenirs, food and drinks. An absolutely incredible experience which I owe to a good engineering friend at DAC. Biman Airlines was justifiably very proud of this airplane and took meticulous care of it during its service from 1988 to 2014 ... 26 years! in which it served admirably, safely and profitably. I'm not going to directly address all the inaccurate comment section statements re the safety record and design of the DC-10, some parts of which I had a hand in. To engage in such discussions is an utter waste of my time. Let it suffice to say that the aircraft is a good one which got a bad rap due to shortcuts taken by the operators of the plane, NOT DAC. NO engineer I have ever known goes to work in the morning saying to him or herself "Gee, lets design some unsafe airplane systems today so I and my family and friends can ride on that very plane many times in the future." A few hours researching and conducting some due diligence regarding the incidents that did occur will support my position. It is also proven by the fact that in 2021, FedEx still flies a large number of these aircraft (along with the MD-11), the U.S. Air Force flies 59 KC-10s, and some are even used as water bombers to fight fires. All of this proves the soundness of the design. I hope you enjoyed my above discussion as much as I enjoyed the video.

Personally I like the DC-10-30 but not so much the -10. The reason why is because most of the redundancy safeguards on -10s were not there. the -30s had more safeguards and protection against a chain of improbable errors. You cannot blame the operators for AA96 and TK981 if McDonnell Douglas did not issue an airworthiness directive and say “These are mandatory improvements, we need to make them.” The company had even seen a cargo door blow out during it’s own ground testing and didn’t know how/didn’t care to investigate and resolve the issue. I don’t think it’s honest to say “no engineer designs a plane without safety in mind” when pertaining to McDonnell Douglas… The FAA has documents that are out there that state their opinions of after further review that a lot of redundancy and minute features and aspects of the DC-10 were rushed and not thought through, perhaps to beat the only other large trijet in development and steal some 747 orders. It wasn’t really just the cargo door (and also not even AA191), there were a whole other host of design issues with small aspects of the DC-10. It’s also worth noting that what really did McDonnell Douglas in was that they really screwed up with the MD-11 design because they could not take risks and they did not want to design an actual clean sheet small airplane design to replace the MD-80 and an actual clean sheet design to replace the DC-10 (MD-11 was really just a fine tuned DC-10 if you think about it) The longest DC-9 derivative, the MD-90 just barely could hold more people than the 737-700 and A319, and being a 40 year old design at that point in the 1990s, neither was it super optimised for the IAE V2500s. The MD-11 failed to meet fuel and range targets so badly that airlines got fed up and ordered the 777, A330s and A340s. Anyways, McDonnell Douglas’s later -30s and -40s were safer. The -10 was a POS in my opinion.

German Aviation statistically speaking, DC-10 is a lot more unsafe, due to the fact that it had much less examples built than the 747 and 737 and those had less crashes per plane.

MD 10 is an upgraded variant of DC 10 with safer technologies, but retaining the same engines (CF-6-*6/45/50* and it's rival JT-9D-7R-4D). It had been further developed in2 a longer version, the MD 11 with newer engines (CF-6-*80* and it's rival PW4000). @SplicesAndCelluloid
@SplicesAndCelluloid 7 лет назад
Dervio Soares Only 1 of those instances was actually the fault of the airplane, and in that case not even entirely so. MD issued a service bulletin to Turkish Airlines to fix the issues, and they were not. Had they been done, no accident would have occurred. American 191 was also the fault of the airline, with the maintenance crews taking shortcuts which damaged the engine pylon. United 232 was due to a manufacturing defect of an engine, and could have happened with any other plane. You really have no point with these examples.

I mean give me a break that crap had 15 fatal events!! 3 November 1973; National Airlines DC10; over New Mexico, USA: The aircraft had an uncontained failure of one of the wing mounted engines. A piece of the engine struck the fuselage and broke a passenger window. One of the 116 passengers was sucked out of the aircraft during a rapid decompression. The remains of the passenger were not found. 17 December 1973; EC-CBN; flight IB933; Iberia DC10-30; Boston, MA: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Madrid, Spain to Boston, MA. The aircraft encountered a wind shear condition during approach, and struck approach lights about 500 feet short of the threshold and also collided with a dike, shearing off the right main landing gear. The aircraft came to a stop about 3,000 feet down the runway. None of the 14 crew members or 154 passeners were killed. 3 March 1974; THY Turkish Airlines DC10; Flight 981; near Paris, France: The aircraft was a scheduled international flight from Paris to London. During climb, a rear cargo door which was improperly closed blew out. The resulting cabin decompression caused damage to the main cabin floor and to some control cables in the area. The crew was unable to control the aircraft and the plane crashed. All 333 passengers and 12 crew were killed. 1 March 1978; Continental Airlines DC10-10; Flight 603; Los Angeles, CA: The aircraft was on a scheduled domestic flight from Los Angeles, CA to Honolulu, HI. The crew aborted the takeoff due to ruptured tires and were unable to keep the aircraft from running off the runway. The aircraft caught fire after coming to a stop, and the passengers and crew evacuated. All 14 crew members survived, but two of the 186 passengers were killed. 25 May 1979; American Airlines DC10-10; N110AA; flight 191; Chicago, USA: The aircraft was on a scheduled domestic flight from Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA. During the takeoff roll, the left engine and pylon separated from the wing, damaging several hydraulic lines at the same time. The crew continued the takeoff, but the damage caused by the engine separation led to the uncommanded retraction of some flight control surfaces on the left wing as well as the loss of warning systems associated with those control surfaces. The aircraft rolled to the left, lost altitude, and crashed shortly after takeoff. All 258 passengers and 13 crew members were killed. Two people on the ground were also killed. 31 October 1979; Western Airlines DC10-10; Mexico City, Mexico: The crew inadvertently landed on a closed runway parallel to the active runway. The aircraft struck a large vehicle and crashed. 63 of the 77 passengers and 9 of the 11 crew were killed. 28 November 1979; Air New Zealand DC10-30; near Mt. Erebus, Antarctica: The aircraft was on a sightseeing flight from New Zealand to Antarctica. Due to a navigational error, the crew flew the aircraft into a mountain during whiteout conditions. All 237 passengers and 20 crew were killed. 23 January 1982; World Airways DC10-30CF; Boston, USA: The aircraft landed on an icy runway and was unable to stop before leaving the runway. The came to rest partially in an adjacent waterway. Part of the fuselage broke off and was in the water. Two of the 198 passengers were killed. 13 September 1982; Spantax DC10-30CF; Malaga, Spain: The crew rejected the takeoff at about V1 and were unable to stop the aircraft on the runway. 48 of the 393 passengers were killed. 24 July 1987; Air Afrique DC10; flight 56: en route Rome-Paris: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Rome to Paris when the plane was hijacked by a single hijacker and diverted to Geneva, Switzerland to refuel. While on the ground the hijacker shot and killed one passenger. The hijacker was subsequently killed by Swiss police who stormed the plane. None of the 15 crew members were killed, while several passengers were injured while fleeing the plane, none of the other 141 passengers were killed. 19 July 1989; United Air Lines DC10; Flight 232; Sioux City, USA: While in cruise on a scheduled flight from Denver, CO to Chicago, IL, engine two had an uncontained failure. The failure, which was due by an undetected crack in the engine's fan disk, also damaged hydraulic lines led to a loss of all three hydraulic systems. The flight control systems were powered by the hydraulic system, and as a result were inoperative for the rest of the flight. The crew maneuvered the aircraft to a crash landing at the Sioux City airport using differential thrust on the two remaining engines to control the aircraft. One of the 11 crew members and 110 of the 285 passengers were killed. 27 July 1989; Korean Airlines DC10-30; Tripoli, Libya: The aircraft crashed about one mile (1.6 km) short of the airport during a daylight landing attempt in thick fog. Airport navigational equipment for an instrument landing on the intended runway were apparently not working at the time of the event. Four of the 18 crew members and 68 of the 181 passengers were killed. Six persons on the ground were also killed. 19 September 1989; UTA DC10-30; near N'Djamena, Chad: The aircraft crashed as a result of an in flight explosion due to a bomb. All 156 passengers and 15 passengers were killed. 21 December 1992; Martinair DC10-30F; Faro Portugal: The aircraft landed in a storm, hit a wing tip, and departed the runway. Two of the 13 crew and 56 of the 327 passengers were killed. 13 June 1996; Garuda Indonesia Airways DC10-30; Fukuoka, Japan: The aircraft was on a flight from Japan to Indonesia when it overran the runway after an aborted takeoff and caught fire. There were 260 passengers and 15 crew on board. Three passengers died and a reported 108 of the occupants suffered various injuries. 21 December 1999; Cubana DC10-30; Guatemala City, Guatemala: The aircraft overran the wet runway and came to rest in a residential neighborhood adjacent to the airport. Eight of the 18 crew members and nine of the 296 passengers were killed. Nine people in the neighborhood were also killed.

Such a sad ending to a GREAT tri-jet. In my humble opinion i truly feel they still have a place in the commercial market. Especially the MD-11 which could easily compete size wise with the 787 and A330. It's a damn shame these jets are only relegated to cargo duty now. I think with some updated cabins and engines they could still be VERY viable competition.

Yeah it had major issues, but they were more or less solved within 8 years of release. By that point though, the damage was already done to the point that speculation media would attack any DC10 that had tiniest of mechanical anomalies and make it look like a big deal. If even tiny anomalies were made to look like disasters by the media, imagine the public when another actual DC10 disaster killed 272 on American soil. At which point, the media pretty much demolished any successful future for DC10 when AA191 went down 1 year later in Chicago due to what was later found to be crappy airline maintenance procedures of the engine pods...

@nigahiga6400

BucketOfCreeper American 191 crashed because the airline cut corners. To service the engine they had to remove it from the nacelle. To save money, the airline simply removed the nacelle with the engine attached to it but didn't properly put it back, causing the mounts to fail from undue stress. You can't blame the design for failing from improper maintenance work. Much like China Airlines 611 and the half-assed repair done on the tail. Both cases involved failing to follow manufacturer guidelines which led to disaster.

Well it's still crashed but it's mostly airliners fault but can't say that dc10 is a good plane tough :(

Meanwhile if ur feeling nostalgic and want that experience again, fly united airways(BD), u'll get free mosquitoes and a shit load of anti insect repellent a couple of minutes after everyone settles down and sometimes their ac stop working... But its ok, the plane is flying atleast, all fine and dandy! P.S. a 2hr direct flight might end up as a 7-8hr flight cause in midair they'll unilaterally decide to take u somewhere else as a transit stop. but all is good! HAH!

@@BucketOfCreeper Why is everyone constantly bashing the DC-10? It was a cool plane! Some of the early accidents had to do with improper maintenance procedures (e.g. AA 191). Granted, it was certainly NOT an easy plane to maintain. Then again, neither is the A380, I'll bet.

@@BucketOfCreeper well actually DC-10 was a cool plane. Since 2 accidents caused by Cargo door, DC-10 became one of safest plane. The accident that happens afterwards aren't the plane's fault, but the operator's fault.

@@WNDWSTIDN At least after the cargo door fix, no one's automatically pointing fingers at MD for incidents involving MD's non-DC10 aircraft. I was on one of these flights and it was well worth the money. You could walk around nearly the whole aircraft for 10min after landing and take great pics.. They just gave general instruction not to go behind the yellow safety-line since it was "an active runway" :D Remember this plane was only built in 01/09/1988, so it was only 26 years old when flown for the last time last year. Still many older 757 and 767 flying. For example N594HA 767-300 for Hawaiian is in the air according to flightradar at this very moment, at the age of 28.9 years, being nearly 2 years older than this DC10. Too bad S2-ACR was scrapped. In Africa there are even cooler examples of old metal flying, for example this old Finnair DC-9, which still flew last year for East African Express under 5Y-XXA at the age of 49 years! Finnish Aviation museum is hoping to get it, as she still is in flying condition.

When the stewardess responded to the passenger in the row ahead of the photographer...she said "thank you so much." This was the BEST example of sarcasm and intent to state a point without saying or doing anything wrong...look at her face as she says "what was that?" Then he repeats himself and it sounded to me like he said "you are very pretty;" or "you are pretty," then came the look of disgust... Maybe none of this happened and she didn't make that voice tone and expression on purpose....but it seemed like that to me.... What does anyone else think?? Im probably wrong but im curious to see if anyone sees, hears, or interprets it the way I did.. Thanks! Sean M. Delaware USA
