May 1979, The original line-up of the band McGuffey Lane ran through a traditional Zachariah's Red Eye Saloon set in the studios of WTVN-TV in Columbus, Ohio. The band received a copy of the studio footage for their use as part of the agreement. WTVN and QFM96 aired the television show as the first stereo simulcast in central, Ohio. After 40 years the band's tape has been restored and presented here for their fans.

McGuffey Lane's first album is the perfect album. Not one bad song and has stood the test of time. The rest of the country do not know what they missed in this masterpiece. BTW, McGuffey Lane was my first concert ever at the Marion Palace Theater. It was incredible.

Been following Mcguffey Lane since the 1970s. And they weren't known nationally, I sure don't know how that happened, because they were kick ass band and are well known in southwest and South Central Ohio. 🎉❤😊

@@garypigman7131 The only reason they weren't known nationally had to be poor marketing on someone's part. They should have made it as big as Alabama did, no doubt!

I agree that we need more McGuffey Lane! My goal with this channel is to dig through the band’s archive and my videotapes. There are more concerts, interviews and promo videos to restore, transfer and post. The band is on our side. I want to build a visual history for us fans. What we need is respect from RU-vid in the way of subscribers so we can get noticed when people search for videos. I have a full concert from the AGora, also a music video I shot in Zach’s of their first video for Atco records, a video from Nashville with Charlie Daniels... hours of videos. But everything needs restored and transferred into a digital file. So please hit the Subscriber Button. This is just the beginning!

Followed the band literally all over Ohio, sometimes back-to-back nights, spending what money I had on gas, tickets, and beer. Felt like we were watching something special happening. Never a bad show, they were so talented and hard working. Ohio had a strong country rock streak and McGuffey Lane was hot hot. I had the music as albums and 8-track tapes. Favorite place to see them being the long gone Lost C in Frenchtown.

rmcnelley I so agree with you! Three things... I. Great musicians 2. Steve the bass player is the guy everyone followed. They all told me the reason the band is so tight is the bass playing is impeccable. Even the drums follow the bass. And 3. As the producer I fought to have the band’s live audio guy, Charlie Teats, mix the audio because his live mixes were always mixed in stereo. This was a big deal as the TV station was unionized with broadcasting engineers. I finally had to pay a broadcast engineer to stand and watch Charlie mix. It all worked great. The hardest part of restoring the video was keeping the original sound when it went from analog to digital. Thanks for the comment. I needed some good 'ole country music and McGuffey Lane was the best. (Is the best---the radiculous musicianship and the entire band is Stellar!) Your dad Bobby Jean McNelley's vocals are wonderful and he looks so great here. Wow, that country-western snap-shirt is so cool!! John Schwab, Terry Efaw, Steve Reis and everyone sound so fabulous. The blend and the harmonies. OMG! It's so amazing to see this and listen to it. A real treat!!! You are right. It's a fantastic LIVE/film recording. I love these classic songs so much. Thanks for posting. Great quality video for 1979. My brother was a decent amount older and had the first album on vinyl and frequented the McGuffey Lane concerts. I was about 10 when I used to play the heck out of the album when he wasn't around. Although I've seen them as an adult and still appreciate the group and their music, getting the chance to see them perform live as the original band through this posted video has been a great experience. Not many bands had two great singers like Schwab and McNelley. McNelley on Stay in Love With You is particularly a great performance.

Nice find here! What I really remember is about 2 months later these same guys opened up Dixie Jam II at Legend Valley, Oh on July 3, 1979. Who can remember that day and/or attended it? I was there. It was ML, The Allman Bros, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet & Pure Prairie League. It had rained overnight, I remember navigating a lot of mud out in those woods to get there & we finally got there to see ML open up this concert gig about into their 3rd song . Overcast until The Outlaws started playing, The Sun finally came out & eventually started baking all these muddy people who had passed out earlier . Then so many others throughout the day succumbed. Muddied zombies when awoken, if they passed by us, we'd try & help them out. To me, it must have looked like "The Last Days Of Pompeii" out there, Mt Vesuvius revisited. A good time though, great bands & great music! I'd say 70,000 - 100,000 were there.

I am so glad this is now available. I simply loved this band growing up in Central Ohio in the 1970s. Wonderful to watch again.

Don Hornsby It will be so interesting and fun to watch the world join the audience. I have more videos to post but the process to get these old analog videotapes into our digital world is a bit of a trial. But I will persevere! Please become a subscriber to help make this channel more visible. Thanks!

Hi Monte, thanks for putting this together. I first saw McGuffey Lane open for Charlie Daniels with some friends at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh Dec 29, 1980. They were fully as awesome as CDB! Got to see them several times in the following years and they were always excellent.

We have been on the same path! John and I are searching for more video to upload. The COVID thing has slowed us down a bit but we will persevere. Funny your mentioned CDB. I just found a videotape of McGuffey playing at the CDB jam in Nashville. Hope I can get it restored and uploaded. Nice to hear from you!

"Be a friend of mine " is not on the any of their studio records . That song could of been a hit IMO . It was released in 1988 on a live album but it should had been on one of the first two records IMO . Is it a cover ? If not then whoever made the decision to pass on it needs a talking to LOL . Watching them play that song gave me chills . The harmonies are pretty damn good on this recording . I could imagine if it was recorded in a studio . John told me a few years back on fb that they recorded the harmonies to "Breakaway" with one mic they all surrounded it and dub it 3 times . Sounds phenomenal !

I was blessed to see them at Arbogast Performing Arts Center in Troy Ohio this year (2023). Two of the originals and it still brought that McGuffey Lane sound! It was wonderful.

Wow talk about bringing back some memories. I've seen McGuffey Lane over 💯 times in concert. Saw them at Hara Arena the night we lost Tebes. I often wonder how big the band would have been if not for the tragedy that happened. John, Steve and Terry continue to keep the music alive. Thank you so much for posting this. The best damn band in the land. I think this was the best hour I've had since this Corona virus stuff has us all stuck at home. Thanks again for making my day.☮️

This is my "Happy Place" music. It never lets you down and reminds you of more carefree times and good people. I remember the blank sign the city put up on McGuffey Lane because every time they put up the real one, it went missing. I kept hoping for the real one, but never had such luck. At this point, 64 is a bit old to be stealing a street sign my favorite band is named after. lol. The Band was always friendly and hospitable to most anyone and would come and sit with you breaks to say hi. Thanks for putting this up it brings back great memories.

I just got a birthday card from my wonderful hubby and the phrases "people like you " and "people like me" were on the front. I found this and made him listen to McGuffey Lane. I too have worn out the first album! Saw them at the "Aquanaut" (sp?) near Salineville, Ohio several times. And in Youngstown, Ohio. Many wonderful memories of many happy songs dancing and singing along! Can't believe how easily the lyrics came right back! Thank you for creating this space on the interwebs for fans!!

This was the best band in Central Ohio during 70's; born in Athens, Ohio; tragedy struck with the loss of Stephen " Tebes Douglas and Bobby Gene Mcnelley; still play locally in Oho with original members John Schwab and Terry Efaw. This 1979 show has appearances by Chillicothe's own Tom Ingham. Tom opened for them many times.
