Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I can tell you for a fact that they do. I get that comment all the time. I don't mean to frustrate you, but I just can't pick up every rock. I've thought about doing a livestream from a beach, but many beaches I go to don't have cell service and I don't think I'd get very far with everyone wanting me to pick up different rocks. I need to put more thought into where I could do that and how I could possibly keep up with all the comments.

That's a nice memory of your dad. Honestly, I didn't even look at the camping area, I spent all my time on the beach. I think Clovis said that the campground had been moved because the high water washed out the old one. I might have that slightly wrong, but it was something like that.

I found an Amethyst agate about 4 inches long many years ago. This was near the time they would be closing McLain for the winter. It was near dark and storming when we pulled into the park for our last camping session of the year. We had to put a tarp up to stop the strong winds in order to get the tent up. But the next morning, after coffee of course, I strayed to water's edge and was kind of shocked to see this just waiting for me to pick up! One never knows what the waves will wash in.

Sam the Tumbling King! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And I laughed at “Urbanite” - at one of my favorite rockhounding spots I find what I call “Brickia”: chunks of water-worn red brick hiding amongst my favorite conglomerates 😂 (btw if you’ve never tried tumbling a conglomerate before, give it a shot! I’ve gotten some beautiful results with them, just don’t put them in with fancy rocks in case a pebble breaks free along the way; usually I cut/grind them on the saw into tumbler sized chunks and they stay together pretty well!)

I doubt it, but you have more experience doing it, and I have no valid explanation for what I’m saying; just a question/observation. To that end, are you saying the dark outer ‘shell’ (don’t know the appropriate word, just using my best analogy) of it goes from one side to the other if you cut in half? With the rock in your hand at 1:31 I’d call BS
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 месяца назад
@@given0fox968 I left that one on the beach, so I can't cut it to verify one way or the other. I just know from experience in cutting a lot of rocks that they usually look the same on the inside as the outside. There is something called a weathering rind on rocks though, where the outside can be a slightly different color due to oxidation, fading, iron staining, etc. It's not usually too dramatic, but it's noticeable.
@given0fox968
@given0fox968 3 месяца назад
@@MichiganRocks based on the surrounding rocks, and the one I mentioned in your hand, I saw a similar ‘hue’ in what I feared was some sort of ‘staining’ in that rock and the surrounding. I hate to bother you with sucha stupid question but: I am a real newbie to all of this rock stuff. How do you know what kind of rock it is? Hod do you know if it is a valuable stone? I would hate to be putting it in the tumbler, or breaking it open and ruining the stone. Any answers are appreciated. I lived a block off of Lake Michogan growing up and spent 23 years of my life and never gave the stones a second thought except or the alwives and sand flies. HA Love your videos.

I am not a geologist and I don't know what many of the rocks I pick up are. I don't worry about the value that much, I'm just there to enjoy the rocks. As for breaking them open, I don't break rocks. I tumble them, cut them, make jewelry out of them, but I don't just break them.

McLain is our preferred campground on the Keweenaw! mostly because it was our first experience with Lake Superior rocks! was the beach in better shape since 2023? so much sand and shoreline was lost south of the campground in the winter of 2022 and 2023.

I have only been here once before and we didn't walk very far, so I can't really compare.

Just got home from my first trip to Michigan. We went all around eastern part of the upper peninsula. It was so beautiful and we found so many cool rocks! Our favorite spot was Perry's Landing near Deer Park. Love your channel.

I love that part of the state for rock hunting, but if you're looking for scenery, the Keweenaw Peninsula is much more beautiful. Perry's Landing and that whole area is great for rocks.

The rocks that catch my eye are always different from the ones that catch your eye. Every time you stop and reach for one I think "ooo, that's a neat one" but I'm hardly ever looking at the one you pick up. 😃 I guess someone has to pick up the ugly ones but I'm not saying if it's you or me 🤣

I frustrate a lot of people that way. Everyone has different tastes, so it's impossible to know what someone else is going to like. It makes no sense for me to try to vary it by grabbing rocks that I don't find interesting. At least if I pick up something I like, there's a decent chance that someone else will like it too. I'll keep trying!

Do you come across any jasper.... Where is the best place to look for it I am in the lower southwest of Michigan

I do come across jasper. I was just in your area last month. I think we found a couple pieces of jasper. You just. have to keep your eyes open for it. I don't know of many beaches where it's very common.

Can someone please tell me the name of the scoop for picking up the rocks and the brand? I can't seem to find the same item on Amazon.

can you show us the tumbled stone and rocks please, the ones you pick up in video?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 месяца назад
I sure can, but it will be a long time from now. Rock tumbling takes me months. I also like to get them all done before I make a video because I take before and after pictures and it's easier to keep them straight if I do them all at once. I just got the last of last summer's rocks polished, so now I need to find time to spend several hours in the basement trying to take pictures in the same position as I photographed them when I started them.

I use a GoPro for most shots, but an iPhone for close ups of small rocks. All the sound is from the GoPro though because I have a little external mic that sounds better, especially in wind.
