With all due respect to Gretzky and his accomplishments, the era mcdavid is putting up these numbers and the total offense he generates makes him the best player of all time. Gretzky will always be considered the great one, and rightfully so. When you compare the skills and goaltending of the Gretzky era to modern day NHL, it’s not even close. Mcdavid deserves to wear the crown. Stanley cup or not.
@thebigpicture2032
@thebigpicture2032 Месяц назад
Gretzky would be on top of the scoring race if he played today and had access to modern training, equipment, nutrition, sleep monitoring etc. He was so far above other players of the era, it was ridiculous. One year he won the scoring race by over 100 points - in the high scoring NHL heyday, nobody else was even close. Gretzky was an inventive player with an unbelievable view of the ice and single-handedly forced the game and players to evolve. I think he would love playing today and would find new ways to score on today’s goalies, his passes wouldn’t be wasted like they were so many times due to teammates not expecting to get the puck on their stick. McDavid has incredible skills and deserves to be compared with Gretzky but hasn’t won the crown yet.

@@thebigpicture2032 Greztky's last 50 goal season was in 1988 at 27 years old. Gretzky did most of his damage in the early to mid 80s when the goalies were absolutely atrocious. 95% of Gretzky's goals in the 80s would not go in today. Also remember that the league at that time was like 80% + Canadians - it wasn't a global game like it is now. When Gretzky was 28 or 29, the league started to transition into the league it is today, and subsequently, his numbers took a nose dive. After 1990, he never scored 40 goals again. The year he retired he was 37 and scored a whopping 9 goals. For context, Crosby is almost 37 and is on pace to score 40 goals and 90 points this season.

Best of his era (this era) I would say yes however all time I think it is too soon. His career isn't even half done, I think when it is all set and done it will be a good conversation but not right now. Gretzky was just completely and utterly dominant in his era, no one else really came close in the 80s. Here in the 20s he is the best but the separation between him and others is not as big as it was for Gretz.

Oil fan. Love McD. So happy to watch another generational player in my "old age". MacKinnon and Kucherov (and somewhat Drai) have been dancing around each other for the past decade. Crosby/Ovie the decade before that. Great hockey, but there is no domination like Gretzky had over the rest of the league until Mario showed up. Orr? His primary comparables are against other defencemen of which Coffey and Bourque came close. I think one way to recognize them together is how they each revolutionized the game. Gretzky was all about vision and awareness. Rules were created/changed to slow down Gretzky and the Oilers...most were undone later. Even the recent BS with the Oilers owing all those 3rd round picks for fired coaches/GMs and prorated stats on trade considerations still make me go hmmmm. Orr rushed with the forwards. Mario was the ultimate power forward. McD is all about his speed and stickhandling.

Scoring was next to impossible with the constant nasty stick work, and there was no 3 on 3 overtime to pad the stats. I lived through it. The only thing that made it possible to score at all was the smaller and much heavier goalie gear, meaning those guys had to actually move to make a save (unlike today where the bulky zero weight goalie gear basically fills up 80% of the net). Hell, today the sticks do half of the work for the players with the extra 20 mph that the spring in them provides! Those old wood sticks from yesteryear didn't provide much extra shooting speed. Honestly, in today's NHL my grandmother could net 20 a season!

Bobby Orr could have played forward. Not Gretzky not McDavid not Crosby not Ovechkin not Lafleur not Lemieux - none of them could have played defense and been as effective as Orr would have been as a forward. Orr could have played GOALIE. The "greatest" who ever played ... by what standard? For me the standard is the guy who could excel at any position....and could hit and stand up for himself as well and not need to have a goon ride shotgun for protection....

nothing makes millennials and genz angrier than not being the best at something...so, everything in the past was terrible, anything they do is the best. If the past greats had the same rule changes that the NHL has made recently, they would have dominated even more. Starting in 2005-2006 Season: The NHL adopted a comprehensive package of rule changes that included the following: Goal line moved to 11 feet from end boards; blue lines moved to 75 feet from end boards, reducing neutral zone from 54 feet to 50 feet. Center red line eliminated for two-line passes. "Tag-up" off-side rule reinstituted. Goaltender not permitted to play the puck outside a designated trapezoid-shaped area behind the net. A team that ices the puck is not permitted to make any player substitutions prior to the ensuing faceoff. A player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of regulation time or at any time of overtime to receive a minor, a major, a misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension. The size of goaltender equipment reduced. If a game remains tied after five minutes of overtime, winner determined by shootout.

I disagree. McDavid has lost scoring titles to Kucherov, Draisaitl, and is possibly going to lose the scoring title this year to either Kucherov or MacKinnon. These are all great players. But neither Gretzky or Lemieux would lose scoring titles to these types of players. Players like Kurri, Stastny, Yzerman, Bossy, etc. never beat Gretzky or Lemieux in a scoring race when Gretzky and Lemieux were healthy. And these players were approximately comparable to Kucherov, Draisaitl, and MacKinnon. If McDavid was as good as Gretzky and Lemieux, then he would be consistently beating all of his peers in scoring year after year, and by large amounts every year. Kucherov, Draisaitl, and MacKinnon wouldn't be able to outscore McDavid, even for 1 single season, if McDavid was at the level of Gretzky and Lemieux. Prime Gretzky never lost a scoring race to anyone. Prime Lemieux never lost a scoring race unless he was injured for half the year. McDavid is on the verge of losing his 3rd scoring race in his prime.

When lemieux was good who else was there to compete with him that was putting up 1.7+ ppg. sorry players are way better and more skilled now so there's actual competition, and the only years he lost the scoring race was when he missed multiple games like you're just blatantly ignorant for the sake of being dumb. the fact that he can miss all these games and give everyone a head start and still be in the convo is laughable for the other players.
