The way Bret sells Jerry's punches... man, these guys were great together. When Hart cowers in the corner, it's almost believable that he'd not want any more punishment from Lawler. You rarely see Bret begging for mercy, and he did it convincingly here. If wrestling is an art, Bret Hart is its Michelangelo, Picasso, and Rembrandt all rolled into one.

Bret said he had blast at Memphis, since he could act like his old heel self. The people were 'Hot', so getting a reaction was even better.

Boston Crab is performed by having the opponent face down on the mat and grasping both of his legs under your armpits, locking your hands, then sitting back on his upper torso and neck. It is a legit submission hold, when locked in and when crouching over the upper body, adding a ton of pressure to the lower back. The Scorpion Deathlock/Sharpshooter starts with a step-over toe hold, then twisting the opponent onto his front, and cinching down into a single-leg Boston Crab, while the legs are locked in a figure 4 pattern. It puts pressure on the knees, though also the back, if you crouch down over the upper back. A single-leg Boston Crab was the same as the standard, except you only held one leg under the armpit. It was usually a punishment hold, rather than a finishing hold, like the Boston Crab (before everyone started using things like the Boston Crab and the Abdominal Stretch in the middle of the match, instead of the finish).

this Memphis wrestling for years was ECW before there actually was an ECW.. They used to do some crazy matches, and Lawler burning people, and Kendo sticks, bottles broken over heads, it was pretty violent.

@zybanday No, the Boston Crab and the Sharpshooter are different holds. The crab is only supposed to effect the back where as the sharpshooter is supposed to effect both one of the legs and the back at the same time, as the legs are crossed over the holder's knee. Notice how in old matches Bret always works a leg, because that was what the opponent was supposed to sell. The Walls of Jericho is a Boston Crab, except it's slightly modified.

So Hell in a Cell is pretty much a combo of NWA's/WCW's Thunderdome/Thundercage match and NWA's/WCW's War Games match (a giant cage that surrounds/engulfs the ring, is made of a chain link mesh & has a covered top). Before them, WWF/WWE mainly had cages made of steel bars. I have a Hogan vs. Bossman cage match in a chain link type cage that NWA/WCW was known to use back from 1989, which I thought was very weird. I've seen organizations w/ cages resembling gates you see covering stores at night.

NWA/WCW had cages that surround the entire ring way before Hell in a Cell. The earliest one I remember was the Thunderdome Match at Halloween Havoc '89 (Sting & Flair vs. Terry Funk & Great Muta). WCW had 2 more in 1994 at Superbrawl IV and perhaps more after that. WCW's Thunderdome & Thundercage cages had open tops (unlike the War Games cage) & were cages with steel bars rather than the chain link fence cages WCW usually had at War Games & their normal cage matches.

"Memphis Rasslin" were the kings of the run-in (no pun intended)..that's exactly where Jeff Jarrett and TNA get it from. I grew up on this stuff, and I didn't like all of that BS, even as a kid. no one could ever win straight up, and it's always something silly, like losing to a clothesline..a CLOTHESLINE of all things! but Lawler did, and still does, have the best worked punches in the business. watching him swing on somebody is an AWESOME sight!

I think this was more interesting than what was happening in the WWF after King of the Ring. It would have been cool if Hart would have turned into a snob/heel after winning KOTR & Lawler would have turned face. Very cool to see Hart & Gonzales working together along with Owen as a much better heel than he was in 1994 in WWF. The possibilities...

I'm thinking when Riki Choshu did it in Japan and Hiroshi Hase brought it to Canada in the early 80s, they called it a Scorpion Hold.. even still, I HATED listening to Maclin as a kid. he ALWAYS called moves the wrong name, and his announcing in general was PISS POOR. he was a wannabe Lance Russell, and the shyt just DID NOT work..
