The length of enamel rods is greater than thickness of enamel because of oblique direction and wavy course of the rods. Orban's Oral Histology and Embryology 13th edition on page 51 says : The enamel consists mainly of inorganic material (96%) and only a small amount of organic substance and water (4%). That water, in volume amounts to 6-7 % , Dentin on the other hand which has 35% organic content and 65% inorganic content has 22% water.
