This is a long one but something a little different. A painted MDO Plywood sign with a little something different, the tree clip art is cut out from the center of the sign. I'm not sure I did it the BEST way to get it done but it turned out great. Start to finish and my thought process combining paint and vinyl with a few tips along the way.

Great idea using the slivers of HDU to fill the MDO voids. I have always used either body fill or paintable outdoor caulking, however we hardly ever use MDO anymore because of pricing and availability (Canada). Now its mostly PVC or ACM...but I love the strength and rigidity of MDO. Nice work! Keep the videos coming!

MDO is getting expensive and hard to get here as well. I'll be trying a product called EXTIRA soon, it's like MDF but 100% waterproof and much easier to get a pricing looks great too. I do a lot of ACM signs on the CNC, and it's a great product. I've considered trying PVC but it's pricey as well and I don't like the fact that it can warp if it does not have a backer. Most of my signs hang and not mounted to a wall or rigid source so I need something like MDO that won't do that.

@@TheSignGuy I received a small sample of Extira quite a few years ago, looked like it would be a good alternative. It didn't seem to take off in the sign industry, for whatever reason. As for PVC, I've had pretty good luck with 10mm and thicker not warping, however these signs had a white background. I'd be a little concerned with warping with a dark color background.

Water putty or lightweight body filler. I prefer spraying my colors on. Rollers and brushes leave to much texture or tiny air bubbles making it difficult for paint masking or vinyl to stick well on the edges. Always cut the line paper with one stroke of sharp scissors or razor knife to prevent lint from getting under your vinyl. A clean straight cut line of the liner paper helps decrease bubbles at your hinge point and will makes your transition to the second half a world easier also. Great looking sign man😎

I wish I could spray the signs but the over-spray gets everywhere. Great tips! Thanks for watching!

The gloss on Ronan one stroke is very good.

Yes it is, not the same as 1 shot. It looks like a "deeper" gloss if that makes any sense.

why not use the cnc for the center or cnc the whole thing out ?
@CJH457

my thoughts exactly,,,why not use the CNc?

Well to be 100% honest it never crossed my mind to do it on the CNC. LOL I've never did a partial cut, because my CNC will only cut 30" X 30". All on my 24x36 sign I've always done with a pattern and with the jigsaw. Now that I think about it I could have done the cut out on the CNC but it would have been a little more planing on my part. It always helps to bounce ideas off of someone else, so thank you and it will try that if I get the opportunity to try another one.

when you flipped it over, are you laying it directly onto the sawhorses? I always have problems with this step in that my finish can get marred

I use boards (1x3's) that kinda look like an "H" with 4 screws in each of the corners. When I flip the sign it rests on those 4 screw tops, makes it easy to to tiny touch-ups instead painting the whole side. I explain it here at 14minute mark ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D371rPT8mh4.html

Get a diode laser???

Got a 10watt diode but it NEVER would have cut through that 1/2" MDO.
