You ever wondered how WWX’s death went about? Yeah same bruh
I’ve actually been screaming about this song for at least half a year but it was only recently that I did anything about it (it did take like 2 months of work tho oof!). The animatic was hugely inspired by the Star vs. the Forces of Evil animatic done by Art of Rhues which centred around Eclipsa (which is brilliant please positively check it outtttt!!!)
This is my 2nd animatic anddd I hope you enjoyed it :”)

A lot of people are asking so: This was created using a combination of Clip studio paint converted photoshop files (for the drawings) and After effects (for the moving part)

For those asking, the characters here are from the Chinese novel MoDaoZuShi or The grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. WeiWuXian, a demonic cultivator feared and hated by millions was killed 13 years prior to the main story (which is what this animatic is about) and was summoned back to life due to mysterious reasons! There are English translations online and its definitely worth a read! If that's not your style you can also check out the Donghua or comic under the same name, as well as the drama called "The Untamed"

My only complaint is that there are too many names. I didn’t want to admit how long it took me to realize Lan Zhan / Lan WangJi / HanGuang-Jun were the same person. Im pretty sure the only reason I’m getting confused is because I’m not super familiar with Chinese culture (and naming conventions). And just when I started to get the hang of who was who, more names are introduced I guess that shows how invested I am in the story. Even though I had to often go back and reread parts, my confusion hasn’t stoped me from enjoying the story lol

This part was always hard for me to read in the novel, cause Wei WuXian seemed so sad and a bit defeated. He only wanted the strength to protect those he cared for, and those same people seemed to keep turning against him the harder he tried.

ok i'm on my fifth rewatch and. the ending gets me every time. I'm just. the first time I went, "oh my god are we really going to see wwx DIE" and then it just. cuts to black. and you don't see it but. bUT THEN YOU SEE /LAN ZHAN/. YOU SEE LAN ZHAN /FEELING/ IT. "is the thing they see the thing I have to be" dude that fucking hurt SPOILER AHEAD! in the novel it was three months after JYL's death that WWX is finally killed, supposedly because his power backfired on him but the implication (or popular headcanon) is that it was suicide - he hated himself so much that his puppets turned on him, just like how they turned on JZS... I always imagined WWX as shell shocked in all of these three months, grieving his sister's death, grieving for Wen Qing and Wen Ning who were his last friends, blaming himself for their deaths and for the thousands of innocent lives he took in the aftermath of JYL's death, but he can't let go just yet because there were still other innocent Wens to protect.. there was no where left to run to so I think they were really just.. waiting for their deaths to come, and for WWX it was just him slowly going crazy alone in Burial Mounds... and in the end when the second siege occurred, he was really fighting for no reason, for a lost cause...

Fun fact for those who missed it : the reason why men of ancient era had long hair was because it represented what your parents gave to you (birth) so wwx deciding to cut off his hair represented him letting himself go (preparing for death) and releasing his family

The moment I saw Jiang Yanli's spirit hug Wei Ying I burst into tears! This is so well done and I love all of the emotions that Wei Ying shows. And then, we see Lan Zhan crying at the end! Hurts so bad, you did a good job.

I love this!!!! I love the symbolism of wei ying cutting his hair which is him freeing himself from his past, but other's will see it as disgraceful (which is a running theme of people not understanding why he choses the actions he takes). Great job!

Hnnnnnnng the amount of awe I am in. This is breath taking and I keep thinking "haven't I seen this before?" But I don't think I've even read a fanfic where he cut off his own hair, let alone seen an animatic with it. (It really is quite the statement and hits so hard???) And the art is just???? My accessibility to grand enough adjectives is limited. Its pretty? And I can actually see which individual is which, without too much guesswork? Its great. I have a character who is going to have to choose whether he helps his brothers kill a bunch of heroes, or if he faces off against them to give the group he's kind of friends with a chance to escape. This song fits the general vibes, especially when he decides that facing off against them would be a win-win. Either he's defeated (his brothers have always been physically more powerful) and the good group escapes, or he's killed and he gets to see his mother again (who was killed by his brothers). He's had enough of being an agreeable doll threatened by physical harm, he's decided where he stands, uncaring if he gets redemption or not.

Just realized, that at 0:35 wwx is hovering over the jiang bell (I dunno if it’s supposed to be the one made for Jin ling or his own, but it’s a jiang bell) and when he reaches for it “fear will your enemy and death it’s consequence” plays and the candle flame hovers right over where his golden core would be. It’s just super small symbolism that I didn’t notice until now, the like hundredth rewatch. I feel like it’s a little bit of him wanting to reach out to jc and being unable to without acknowledging the golden core situation. And then he walks away from the things representing his family and his golden core willingly, just like he did to the actual things. The candle placement,,, hurts.

I watched this a while ago not knowing what it was from and I saw it was from a novel so I didn’t look into it too much. A couple months later and I get suggested the Donghua and ended up reading the entire novel. This is amazing and thanks for getting me into this amazing story!

OH MY GOD, THIS IS AMAZING!! IT HAD ME POSITIVELY IN TEARS. words cannot describe how much I Love this with my entire soul. The pacing the animatic, the artwork god it's all so beautiful. I love the symbolism of him cutting off his hair. THE ENDING OH MY DHIHBN jiang cheng's heartbroken eyes sends me AND THAT END, LAN ZHAN LAN WANGJI IT DEVASTATES ME. It's probably just a coincidence, but I love how the lyric "make things right" comes up as Jiang Cheng arrives and stares in horror at what WWX has become, and how he probably thinks this could have all been avoided if WWX just listened to him. Or maybe WWX is throwing the phrase back at JC. Either way, it just ties in so well with your "Make It Right" animatic!!!

The move with the hair.. thats.. considering chinese history and hair cutting being actually smth so shameful that its even considered worse than death (damn morals wow,,,) and that basically, considering all this, wwx really just said "yes i did all that and more and i harmed you and you shouldnt be with me ever again, i cant bear to be with you for i have done smth horrible like this" yea like that. LIKE THAT. I.. pain This is so well done thank you so so much!! I hope some fantastic writer out there can take this idea up and maybe write smth (tho its close to canon,,, but y'know.. all the details!!)
