This is Part 2 of a 2-part interview. Horst Petzschler was a Luftwaffe Me-109 (or Bf-109 for our German and European friends) Ace who flew both on the Eastern Front and Western Front.
He flew 297 combat missions, had 26 confirmed victories, and was shot down 13 times. In an unfortunate twist of fate, he ended up after the war in a Russian P.O.W. work camp.
Due to the length of Horst's interview, this program has been split into two parts, and this is part 1. Part 2 will be out next week.
If you like these oral histories, please subscribe to this channel. It will let RU-vid know that this is a relevant channel with compelling content. It will also encourage me to get more content like this out. I have over 200 of these interviews with WWII aircrews.
Thank you for watching, and I welcome your comments!

I meet this man on line in about 1990 and we became sort of "PEN PALS",,,,,we wrote many times to each other and he talk about the war ( particularly air combat )....he was very generous with his time and would sent me many photos with his autograph on them....unfortunately I didn't save all his letters....but I did save some, I did save all of his photos and have them in my pilots album..while we were talking, he told me that he was the" wing man" for Walter Bohatsch... who was living in Canada...Bohatsch also mention in this video was his commander... Through these 2 men, I've had the honor to meet many other WW2 German pilots....Horst die in 2011....I found him to be a gentleman of the highest order.....may he rest in peace....

I think that there was a lot of chivalry in the air war; not so much in the ground war. I believe a lot of the WWII pilots from different countries all got along pretty well after the war. They were all just doing their duty for their countries at the time. I don't think politics played into it for a lot of the German pilots. I think most of them were pretty good guys. Thank you for watching, and thank you for your comments! I hope you will check out my other interviews on this channel.

At the 8 minute mark. Rebuilding the propellor. Germany started the war,the majority of propellor blades were wood. I did not know they made the switch to aluminum, especially as it was particularly scarce by late war. Interesting.
@AirCombatJournal
@AirCombatJournal 4 месяца назад
I'm wondering also if this had anything to do with their surrender conditions from WWI, as they were not allowed to manufacture any war machines. Or maybe aluminum was scarce at the beginning of the war, and as wood was a proven material for props, they could stretch their aluminum supply by using wooden props. You brought up an interesting observation! Thank you for watching, and thank you for your comment! I hope you will check out my other interviews on this channel.

@@AirCombatJournal Now I think on it,another YT post stated FW 190 blades were wood. Presumably the radial engine version. So what were Dora blades ? As horsepower went up,was there an upper limit ? Switching to a new technology midwar was not something taken lightly. Only a few companies,at a guess two or so,to manufacture the actual blades. Hmm. Now I think on it,there is an E model 109 from BofB times, aluminum bent blades. And film images of 190 crashes that would indicate wooden blades. So at any rate, modern practice is,if crashed, replacement only. Would you or anyone else go flying with badly damaged repaired blades ? Only wartime necessity would make that possible. At any rate,Cheers.

He was very lucky to leave the soviet p.o.w in 1949 already. My grandgrand father came home 1955. He actually got captured twice. Once march 1945 by the brits and was p.o.w in france until 1948 where they treated them well (which was not normal at this time...french people hated germans back then and may still do). As he was dismissed he went to the soviet occupied zone to go home (we / he are/was from thuringia in the middle of germany). There he got captured again because he was fighting against the soviets in lappland (norway - finish - russian border). My grandma told me that my grandgrand father wasn´t in a good shape when came back to germany. I mean, he had luck to came back at all...a lot p.o.w´s did not survive this (3,2 million p.o.w´s 1,1 million did not survive). But i still can understand the anger of the soviets against the germans - we caused them around 27 million death

I appreciate your feedback regarding the use of music over what are already great interviews. I add music for two reasons. One, it adds to the drama of the narrative. I don't know how much TV you watch, but I believe you will find that 100% of TV and cable shows have a music bed under at least half of the program, particularly in the dramatic scenes. Two, if all my interview footage has a music bed underneath the voice track, it makes it more difficult for unscrupulous people on the internet to lift my interview's audio and repurpose it on their own channels or podcasts. Even though these interviews are protected by copyright, that doesn't stop these unscrupulous people from illegally poaching audio or video from these interviews. For this second reason, I will always have a low bed of music under all my interviews. I've been shooting and editing videos for over 34 years for corporate, broadcast, and agency clients. I have a Master's degree in Radio/TV/Film, and I teach media classes at a nearby university as an adjunct professor. I am very conscious and careful about how I produce a project, including the music mix. I appreciate your feedback, but until there is a groundswell of opposition to the new music mix, the music will stay in the video. This video has 6,800 views and only your one complaint regarding music. If there are one or two specific spots in the video that I missed the mix and it is inappropriately loud, I will be glad to make an adjustment if you will point them out to me. I don't always have time to watch the finished pieces all the way through, so I will admit I may have missed the mix in a spot or two. Once those spots are pointed out, I will be happy to correct them. But totally taking out the music is not an option. I'm sorry if this is not what you wanted to read regarding the music, and I do appreciate your feedback.
