Me Drifting in the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata @ Track - Footwork Cam with Heel-Toe

This is me drifting in the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata ND @ Castelletto Di Branduzzo circuit. It's been one hell of a fun experience, the car has an incredibly good drift setup, it's very easy to control when sideways. Maybe needs a more aggressive handbrake, but overall it's an amazing car. The one I've tested here is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder version developing 160hp through a 6-speed manual. If you were wondering that, yes it definitely has enough power to have fun in the dry!

funny a person like this guy has better skill and technique than all the other super car bloggers that are doing the rounds today on the tube. Maybe those dude's shouldn't rely too much on power and technology and start from the basics like learning to drive well in such a car like this? :)

Imagine how many great racing talents which are lost through economy, location, and networking issues. Racing is sadly usually a pretty pay to enter type of gig, though depends on where you set the bar at.

Seriously considering an MX-5 (NC most likely) as my next car. The feeling this video gives me only helped solidify my plans. I know this is strictly track behavior on display, it just looks so much fun. I also know that ND is a different animal than NC, but still.

Actually, these are the Recaro seats you get from factory when the Miata is ordered with the sports package in Europe (which includes those Recaro seats (with speakers in headrest if you have the Bose option too), Bilstein suspensions and strut bar). Those seats cannot be bought aftermarket...

si vede che ti sei divertito, anche il pistino si presta perfettamente. Il sound è esattamente lo stesso delle precedenti versioni della Mx-5, ma esteticamente preferivo molto di più i precedenti modelli (tutti), questo proprio non mi piace. Per fortuna che c'è la 124 che invece a look è proprio grintosa. Adesso devi fare la stessa cosa con l'Abarth 170cv !!

+Umut Mutlu Constant practice is the key to learn to do it properly. At least that's how I learned to heel-toe and it's worked good so far :)

Sweet heel-toe's. Now a question for mx5 owners, not that I'm one myself but I'm lucky enough to drive one every once in a while. I'm 1,93 meter long (or 6,2 feet) and while I do master heel-toe technique, I can't seem to figure out a way to blip the gas comfortably.. Is it me or is the car too small, any tips?

Tbh, I'm still struggling too. Not sure why, but I can't seem to get my feet in the right position. Granted, I'm learning with this car, I can rev match for days but I haven't mastered heel and toe, but yeah I'm 5'9 and wear a size 11 US shoe.

You can try to hold your foot straight,and not turn it.So not heel and toe,more like placing your foot on two pedals and just tip it right thus pushing the throttle.I hope you get what i mean

Christiaan the MX5 is rear wheel drive. They are not a speed machine but have s wonderful gearbox and the 1.5 litre has a 50:50 power to weight ratio.

Matching the Rep as showen in the video, is not good for the car. You need to release the clatch and be in neutral -> give it some gas -> than press the clutch again to shift in the gear you want to

I know what drifting is my man been doing it for over 6 years. yes more power will help you slide for longer but saying what he's doing isn't drifting is ignorant. it may not be big slides but it is by definition still drifting 😊

Lol I wasn't referring to a significant other I was saying "my man" as in "my friend" referring to you. going by what you say then yes this isn't drifting this is just corner exit oversteer (getting on the gas as your exiting the corner) to classify as a drift there has to be an initiation ie feint, handbrake, or power over.

Great video and thanks for posting this! I just picked up a '16 ND after owning a '13 NC PRHT for 4 years. Wonderful cars! Question - did the car you drove in the video have the LSD (what we would call the "Club" trim here in the US) and any of the performance brakes/suspension options, or was it the open differential? My '13 had the LSD, Brembo brakes and Bilstein shocks, while my new '16 does not.

I wear an 11 shoe size (44-45 euro) and I have wide feet. no problem with heel and toe. I did add Flyin Miata racing pedals, which brings the pedals even closer together www.flyinmiata.com/miata-performance-parts/nd/body-and-interior/nd-interior.html

why the e-brake technique? Doesn't it apply for the turbo charged engine only to maintain high RPM for full turbo boost? This car is 2.0 street unmodified and has Natural Aspiration right?

The MX-5 is easier and to drive on the street. The S2000 needs too many RPM to be as comfortable as the MX-5 with its relatively high torque at lower RPM.

Sadly no, with the open differential, your outer wherls would lose traction on an oversteer.

I believe this IS a non LSD version as only the Club versions get an LSD (the seats look like leather and the headlights look like they're Xenon which means it's a GT). The previous generation's (NC) GT did have the LSD and sport suspension as an often included option, but I don't think it's available outside the Club versions for the ND. I also believe the opposite is true, ebiroll. An open diff would "catch" sooner. that's why the LSD is preferred for drifting.

This one does have an LSD, its probably a eurospec. Here in europe we get recaro seats, which are the seats you're seeing in the video. The two liter also gets 17" wheels, bilsteins, an LSD, seat heaters, pretty much all the comodities which both the club and the GT versions in the US gets.
