Interesting shelter. I am very glad this exists after Zpacks stopped producing the Hexamid Solo tent. I used it for half the PCT and it served me well. It's 10.8 oz so for 4oz more than the Abode it offers doors, full mesh floor and of course a zipper door to get in and out of. The missing door is something that would pair well with an umbrella or rigging a rain skirt to it if conditions are bad and the wind shifts unexpectedly. I think that opening in the mesh floor pairs well with the entry/exit system if one were to overdo it with the olive oil on a thru hike.😂 FR, have been looking forward to see this shelter in a video, thank you very much! -Spinewalker

I’m happy the Abode exists too. It’s a little more streamlined than the Hexamid, but draws a bit of influence from it too. The umbrella or rain skirt is a great idea. I’ve used an umbrella and a rain jacket with some of my flat tarp pitches on certain rainy nights if it was needed. Thanks for commenting and watching 🙂.
Don’t drink a lot before bed, bathroom breaks have to be tough. I could see myself losing my mind at 330 in the morning. Looks like an interesting shelter. Pretty roomy. Probably not too heavy.
@Teddy-fx6fx A single bathroom break here or there isn't too bad, but multiple breaks would be tough. I would definitely use a different shelter in that case. It's a neat shelter, but is for very specific occasions. I still prefer my tarp overall. At 5'10" it still has a fair amount of room, but I feel 6' would be its limit. The lightweight is great and it even weighs a couple ounces less than my favorite tarp/bivy combo.
Looks really great. Thanks for making this video you even got a rain test, awesome! It looks more spacious than my Tipik clone but also much harder to get in and out because there's more mesh on the floor so it seems that the opening is smaller. The beak is definitely bigger so I'm sure it has better rain protection. I agree with the elastic idea to relieve stress while crawling in and out of the shelter but I'm not sure how it would work with the mesh because it's not elastic. I'm starting to learn to sew, and I've got some ideas for a half pyramid, floorless shelter similar to the abode but I want to make it a bit easier to use and a bit more protective.
@slicesofhikes Thanks for watching! Yes, I was happy to have had it out in the rain too to see how it handled it. I feel the elastic would help a little, but not sure how much. Just an idea that was floating in my mind when making the video. Just a little more give to the corners would be very helpful. Awesome! @jakeva9802 the AZT would be a great trail for this type of shelter. I believe there are some still for sale on their website. At least there was the last I checked. The Whisper looks similar in some ways and different in others. I had been looking at it too, but one thing that appealed to me with the Abode was the single pole or stick requirement.
I have the GG Whisper and very similar concept . Some advantages are better wind/rain protection. Has zipper to make it easier to get in and out. Seams like more headspace. Does require 2 poles which for me is not a problem because I use them. But if you don’t then is a downside for sure. Is a little heavier at almost 10oz but for those advantages worth it for me.
Bugnet on the ground then ground sheet on the bugnet. It is large enough that the ground sheet only needs to be on the back end of the tent, which permits the door/vestibule, free to move.
i don't know Mat, i definitely do not like the entrance/exit aspect of the shelter. i think at 6' tall it's too short. as i posted on FB i'm going to order the MLD Cricket. thank-you for another informative video!

Have you used a Zpacks Hexamid tarp or the Gatewood Cape to compare it to? I added perimeter netting to a Hexamid tarp with the beak. Trying to figure out if this has a worthwhile amount of extra space to pick one up or just roll with the Hexamid and my garbage sewing skills.
Maybe I can help with this one. I have used the Hexamid Solo tent (Hexamid tarp with enclosing mesh) and from the video, the size between the Abode and Hexamid seems very similar. If you want more space but like this kind of shelter the Gossamer Gear DCF Whisper is worth a look at only 2oz more but much more volume. Has it's drawbacks - like any of these shelters do. @billtidey I haven’t used those tarps, but I have used and own a Zpacks Hexamid Solo tent. I also own a Plex Solo tent. The tarps I mentioned in this video was referring to flat tarps that I use and pitch in a half pyramid. I feel this tent is most similar to my Hexamid Solo tent. The tent uses a full mesh under the canopy, and has a zippered door, vestibule, and additional tie-outs (all of the things that I had mentioned the Abode doesn’t have). The amount of livable space my Hexamid tent has is very close to the Abode. I have a video of my Hexamid tent and a couple others for comparison which you can find here:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7eH8k58yCZE.htmlsi=bwVQ1WNk9nG6Wvjk. So with perimeter netting sewn to your Hexamid tarp, I feel it would be very close if not the same. For extra space, you might want to look at the Gossamer Gear Whisper which is floorless, but also a little more spacious, featured, and requires two poles. Or maybe an Altaplex tarp and mesh netting project could be an option? Hope this helps!

I’m going to say it’s like an inconvenient plex solo. With ground sheet your at the same weight almost what a silly tent. Getting in looks sooooo stupid Hahah sorry Matt love your content, the way you present but damn! That tent hahaha
@user-or3tk9ej5o It draws some influence from the Plex Solo, but it is definitely different in other ways and not for everyone. With the Tyvek it brings it close to the weight of my Plex Solo, but still an ounce lighter if grams are a focus. With polycro it ends up being even lighter than the Plex Solo, and slightly lighter than my 7x9 flat tarp/cuben bivy combo. Thanks so much! I appreciate that. The tent has its benefits and drawbacks depending on the trail and hiking style for sure 🙂.
