The closing day at Meaford Power station from the inside!
The final unit is tripped at approx 19:40 in this video.
Meaford ’B’ was the second of two power stations built just north of Stone, Staffordshire. It was of 260mw capacity and the first unit of four became operational in December 1955. The station was formally opened on the 4th October 1957.
The nationalised owners / operators the Central Electricity Generating Board was broken up in 1990 and privatised and Meaford became part of National Power.
Generation continued until 13:00 on the 28th September 1990 when no 2 unit was tripped for the very last time. Formal closure occurred on the 1st October 1991 with the five 250’ tall cooling towers being demolished in September 1991. Demolition of the main building and chimney commenced in early January 1996 and the 408’ tall brick chimney demolished by explosives on the 9th June 1996.
As at October 2019 Meaford ‘B’ remains operational. A new gas fired power station is to be built on the site (Meaford ‘C’?) but work has yet to start.

Absolutely brilliant video of a local bygone era. My dad used to get invited up on the foot plate of the engines shunting Meaford sidings back in the 60's

I worked at Meaford Power Station in 1989, responsible for the refurbishment of the electrostatic flue gas precipitators. It was during the inspection of the concrete ducts to the chimneys that I found considerable damage to the internal faces caused by acid attack - the acid was formed by water leaaking into th concrete structure and stack gases combining to create sulphuric acid which attacked the concrete. The corrosion had weakened the structure of the concrete ducting and the walkways - to repair and make safe all the acid corrosion would have required shutting down the power plant costing a considerable sum. The plant closed in 1990, probably as a result of the corroded concrete making it unsafe to continue to operate.

the new precips worked wonderfully well after all the years of the dud originals. i was one of the electricians who so often worked on and inside these precips just thinking back of the stupid things we did like going in side the chambers looking for broken wires VERY SOON after the boiler had been shut down

I see Bob Smelton at 19 minutes in the video who for many years was in charge of the lubrication on the manual flow control smegma valves. a boring but important job. he didn't want those valves popping off under pressure ejecting hot gooey lube all over the place. a very unpleasant smelly long lasting clean up job with mops and buckets.
