When whe have power outages from storms and our freezer with food has the possibility of the meat being spoiled .....we just grill outside after the storm calms down lmfao
Takes way too much space, if you wana have small heater then esbit tablet „stove” will do you good lighter and fuel included is just a bit larger than a 2 pack of cigaretes and can heat average of 1,5 canned meal/ 2 tablets. Also for exsample Polish MRE’s have a lot stronger heaters than USA
I've taken these ice fishing which is pretty neat to make a hot meal without having to carry in a stove and cookware. I wish I knew where to get the heating pack alone though. It would be kinda neat to make your own meal to heat up.
Hey Emmy you do realize that you can reuse the canisters if you can get the heating element which is available at some outdoor/camping shops (they have it but you need to ask) then you can make your own dishes in there whatever you like it's a good-sized pot which is amazing. I bought something similar but they didn't come in that size they came very tiny but you could still buy the heating element to heat up in whatever canister you happen to have but they never have any thing that size that is cool that is really cool I'd reuse those just saying. I'd reuse those pots that you getting there I would not throw them away their recyclable, in so many ways.
Hey, you might be able to reuse the first unit itself if everything was washed and you could get more heater packs for like ramen or something. That would be if it's sturdy enough.
I hadn't realized just how long I've been watching your channel until you mentioned your previous videos. I saw them both when you released them, so I've been watching for at least 6 years!
So proud of you getting a show! I’d say, in my not so humble opinion it’s VERY overdue but better late than never 🤷🏻♀️ You deserve all the good things. You’re one of the first “favorite creators” I had way back before kids when you were in Japan. I’ve never left your channel and my admiration and respect for you has only grown as the years went past. You have a wonderfully pleasant persona, you’re always informative, you’re conscientious and yeah, you’ve got scads of integrity! Plus you’re entertaining and you never seem to run out of ideas. I’m a huge fan and I hope this new audience adores you the way we all do over here. Godspeed and thank you for another enjoyable video 🙏🏻
I have never watched this lady before, but one came up in my suggestions for making dandelion jelly. I ended up watching a few of her videos and I thought what a lovely person she is. You can just tell she gives off a good energy, unlike alot of people nowadays. I hope she continues to do well making videos.
Emmy!! I just wanna say it's always a delight to hear you describe flavors! You're the only person I can totally comprehend the taste and feel without even tasting it!
Hand-warmers like Hotties are (if I recall right) *very* fine iron powder (ie, tons of surface-area) and saltwater (with carbon and vermiculite). Basically, the iron rusts extremely quickly, giving off heat. You throttle the reaction by restricting oxygen. Anyway, you can get bulk boxes of those for about a buk per heater packet.
I highly recommend to watch those videos mentioned by Emmy if you do not know them yet. They are timeless and fun to watch. This goes for the whole back catalogue. There is always something interesting to find. Have a good week everyone
When I was living in Korea I ate so many self heating clay pot rice meals. It was very convenient when I would miss the dining facility due to an exercise or when I didn’t want to walk a mile to eat.
My buddy brought this exact same self-heating Korean bibimap for our 2 weeks' reservist training, but we didn't get around to trying it in the field. Instead we opened the Haidilao tomato hotpot pack, and 4 of us guys were slurping the contents in plastic cups while chilling behind the 10-tonner. It was damn delicious after eating field rations.
These are not cheap. It’s cool for camping and maybe emergency situations but I’ve tried them before and they’re okay. Taste wise don’t expect much. The fun of this is the prep. The final product is so so.
To those saying "mres are given to all soldiers not just officers" I'm pretty sure she knows that, but just used incorrect terminology by accident. You know how any policeman can be called officer? She may mistakenly assume the same about military personnel. 😊 Let's not be overly critical of something so trivial lovelies.
@Mandi Perhaps if it is your mission to educate the ignorant here, you could do so in a more constructive way? Like explaining the difference between enlisted service members and officers for example, but in a friendly info sharing way, instead of in a critical correction kind of way.
I tried one of the clay pot rice dishes (bamboo rice, I think. It was good.) and I was worried about the off-gassing smell so I put it outside. Good to know I don't have to worry if I decide to try another
Emmy, been watching your channel for years love your content. Can you please provide links to the EXACT meal you tried in this vid? The Bibimbap looks pretty good.
When Hurricane Maria destroyed the power grid in Puerto Rico, we were given lots of MRE’s and they were great! I would buy these for emergencies but feel that it’s a big plastic waste for regular consumption.
Years ago there was a company that sold self heating cups of soup and coffee in sporting goods stores. The cups were similar to the common single serve microwave cups but taller with the heater built into the bottom. You would pull the cap/sticker off the bottom and click the "button" to activate, then turn it upright a open the top to let steam escape. Haven't seen them in years but I remember the coffee was decent.
@@caitlinreum100 I was homeless as a young adult, food stamps do not cover hot food.....it was really a very bleak and shame filled time...I dont wish it for even the worst of us.
Emmy, would be nice to quantify the temperature these things get up to with a quick thermometer reading. Interesting to know that they’re more robust than an MRE, the heaters for which I’ve found disappointing.
The Korean military MRE's have a really interesting method of heating. I just watched an American and Korean try each others MRE's. It was interesting to watch.
Instead of using salt, you could pour in concentrated hydrochloric acid and throw in some elemental sodium. Close the lid tightly. And if you want your food truly charred and barbecued you could swap the Sodium for Caesium or Rubidium.
I've loved these for a few years now, I wish someone in USA would just open a store selling these self-heating meals. They're perfect for taking to the beach, camping, and to work.
Oh yeah, I remember that Japan and Singapore have these products. Well, not the same type of brand. Depending what item it is. Which, sadly, I haven’t seen it yet here in Guam.
I would be interested in a video where you show how to reuse the packaging to make your own self Heating meal, as a hack to avoid chucking all that plastic in the trash.
My concern would be if the plastic is food safe, if it’s meant to be single use then there’s a good chance that it might not be safe to use after the first time. Possibly could be used for storage of non food items or some sort of arts and craft project.
@@minermortal1997 what about the one where the food is in aluminum and the plastic houses the heating agent? Could that be reused provided you had another hearing agent?
@@RangeGleasry I'm honestly unsure. I personally wouldn't want to risk it. There could still be a risk of contamination. I'm not an expert though so unfortunately I can't offer a more comprehensive response
These were handy during my old city of residency's COVID lockdown. Everything save a lone Family Mart in my compound was closed prior to total restrictions taking effect. Meals like self-heating hongshaorou were great to have and were much better than the cheap instant noodles being handed out.
To all saying they'd be great for emergency, yes and no. They don't last as long as a true MRE. However these are SUPER great for when doing long road trips and or wanting a good meal without much cooking or cleaning.
I took one of those camping and I enjoyed it very much. I had a noodles dish that was very spicy. It was good but I would like to try one that's a bit more tame.❤ I would take one camping again for sure. ❤
Or power outages!! I recently lost power and was thrilled when I remembered I had my little backpacking stove, and the fuel still worked. I was able to boil water. Make instant coffee, and cook my bacon. And other things before it all went bad.
I remember a drink in Italy, a line called Caldo Caldo and Freddo Freddo, that asked you to poke the bottom and wait a few minutes, and your drink would get either streaming hot or ice cold. I loved them in the 90s but haven't seen them around. I have to google what happened to them. Chemistry is so rad.
I suppose the heating elements are similar to, but much more intense than that used in handwarmers. Genius concept, especially for power out emergencies.
Handwarmers don't get nearly hot enough. The food heater packets get to around 170°F., and warm the good, but can't cook raw ingredients. Military MRE heaters use an iron/aluminum powder. Barocook and others use a quicklime chemical. Add water to start the thermic action. The steam smells a bit, but no problem for indoor use.
I'd love to try those sometime. The first one looked good, but even with recycling, I'm a little put off by how much plastic (and metal) gets used for just a single meal for a single person.
