Reacting to the Mean Girls movie soundtrack felt like a bit of a betrayal considering how many times I asked myself "what the hell have they done to it!!??"

A lot of your thoughts about the orchestrations and overall lack of the humor and charm of this adaptation match up with how I felt about it. It’s just not as expressive or loud or even dumb as the stage show, and all of that is what I liked about the stage show. This just made me miss the ensemble and the energy/drama of the stage show.

The thing with stupid with love is that they made little effort to change the lyrics to fit this new orchestration despite the other lyric changes they did, feels a little half assed aiming more to just be different than unique

The change from "Nice, thank you" to "Truth" was changed for the tour and the Broadway 2.0 show. It wasn't changed for the movie. The "That filter you use looks just like me" is also a change made on the Tour that was done in 2021 when it came back from COVID.

And the new verse from Revenge Party is from the original DC run! They added it back, and the Broadway cast used to say they missed that line on the show, so it's cool to see it back

For me, I didn’t mind this soundtrack. It reminded me of if Mean Girls got the same treatment Hamilton got with its Remix album. Someone was assigned to turn the songs into pop music, and less musical theater. And I enjoy it for the most part. Though I can see why people wouldn’t enjoy some of the songs at the same time. I hope to see it sooner rather than later lol.

I agree so much that removing the big theatre orchestrations was a... less than great idea. This show, and it's source material (the original movie) was CAMP. This new version kinda feels like it was afraid to really just let it be a musical. There were some great parts, but they never let the comedy or the dramatics get BIG enough to really sell the camp. The vibes in this show NEED that theatrical energy. That kinda over-the-top ness to really work the way it should. I even think they tonned down Regina's stuff too much. I mean, in the broadway score, Regina's theme is like, intentionally VERY much a James Bond intro song. It's Goldfinger/Skyfall/Golden Eye. Dramatic and over the top. And that's even barley hinted at in the new arrangement for this movie.

Ironically, I was just looking into this movie when you posted this. I was horrified after hearing a clip of the "calculust" moment. Renee seems to be the only good thing in this movie, and she's sadly getting a lot of hate because she's not the same body type as the OG Regina 🤦 It's sad to see them absolutely fumble every part of this project. So disappointed.

I liked the take for Janice too. Auli’i did a good job with all of her aesthetics. It was definitely different than the original and not as good as Barrett (but how could you beat her honestly), but it was very good. I actually liked “I’d Rather Be Me” a lot. It was different and Auli’i did a great job. Acting wise, actors for Janice, Regina, and Damian are the most memorable. Cady is memorable in the worst way. Cause she in fact cannot sing the songs that were given to her.

Cut songs aside (Jaquel Spivey deserved at least one of Damien’s main numbers. I’d personally have loved “where do you belong” into “meet the plastics” in full at least). My biggest issue is stupid with love. It’s so quirky and energetic in the Broadway show. And in the movie it’s bland. It lacks character. Even in visuals I was underwhelmed by it. Renee slays. But I still miss the very Bond villain orchestrations of the Broadway production. It could have met half way. It’s too clean.

My problem is the drastic change in the instrumental which i can accept as this is for a movie not stage production, but like in world burn it makes no sense changing the dig at Janis to pyro-les first it doesn't fit in the syllables yes "space D***" doesn't make sense seeing as Janis is out and proud and they wanted to remove dated terminology that will cause cancel culture to affect the movie, but why not use a two syllable word rather than pyro-les it just sounds off. And for I'd rather be me it feels like she is being delicate and kind while singing which is the complete opposite meaning of the song, its a song about saying screw society standards if i want to flip you off i will and not care what anyone thinks. Overall the sound track feels like they couldn't pick a genre of music some songs feel like a pop song others rock which can work but there is no running motif throughout so it just feels like they wanted to make an album not a movie musical. I mean even Dear Even Hansen did a better job at this and we all know how that movie is. Like most people say this was a movie for a new generation but that generation walked into a movie not knowing it was a musical and got this. So they lost musical theater fans who knew what the movie was (a musical) by the drastic changes and then angered a whole other group by hiding it was a musical and giving a poor job (in my opinion) musically it makes me wonder what the end goal was if they wanted to bring attention to the Broadway Musical they should've keep not all but most of the musical styles if they wanted a remake of the original movie just make that without the musical elements.

Is funny how most of the songs are actually different in the movie compared to the album, the made some choices with the Album like not to do the "let me start over" of Sexy (that is actually in the movie, in a very funny way) or not to include the Someone Gets Hurt reprise (in the album, bit it is in the movie), even i think "Stupid with love" is a complfte dofferent version in the movie, that was weird

First time ever typing my thoughts as I go along with the video... because I have many thoughts as well, agreeing with you so much honestly. Thank you for filming a video specifically about the movie soundtrack! 1. This is it. The thumbnail that exactly captures my thoughts. 2. "Why is it so serious?" YES 3. The stage show really honed in on the pop-rock but imo the movie seems to think that the orchestrations made it so dated so they went pretty far away from it simultaneously as you said "appealing to their modern young audience" 4. The movie transferring half of the Apex Predator's vocal parts from cady to damian i feel like disrupts the song's purpose established in the stage production of showing a debate of ideas between janis and cady. 5. They remember Reneé once singing Someone Gets Hurt by herself without the two aaron lines and really said it's "a sign for us to cut those aaron harmonies" hahhahaha 6. "Yes, bitch!" goes way back from the obc... they just didn't say it in the cast album 7. "Pyro Les" is a line/lyric change probably connected with criticisms about the use of the D slur in the musical 8A. Yes, "See I went low not high" is in the cast recording. 8B. I also had some hopes they would change the final song. I See Stars was a last minute composition for the show literally days or even hours before they had to freeze show for official performances. I was hoping that since they already have a track record of continuously reshaping the show even during the national tour... they would take the opportunity to rewrite the final song. Tangent to this: Erika sang "Break It Down" (the final song written before I See Stars) in her concert show. She sang a snippet in her mean girls vlog series but she sings the full song in the concert.

I do think Regina's songs work better in the movie, especially Someone Gets Hurt. But otherwise, it felt like they were doing snippets of the songs rather than full musical numbers. Like a bunch of strung together ads for the full show. Its also a shame because you can tell that Janice and Damien are amazing, but they didn't get the chance to show off much.

They ruined Apex Predator. The original Broadway cast recording goes harder with the guitars on the chorus parts of Apex Predator. Especially since they were going for a rock feeling, they should have kept the original orchestrations.

I’ve seen the movie musical the other night. But I personally enjoyed the remix too. But the iconic songs from Broadway cast recording.m is fantastic. The movie soundtrack I feel is gonna be can’t separate from the film since most of the songs are tied to the scene in the film. And I really love Damien in the film. And Regina is always queen.

Most of the actors definitely have the talent. Not only Renee. But rearrangment and directing (god why so unemotional, dull even) is atrocious. Humor and energy is just gone. And so much "trying to be a generic pop song". Only Regina's (Janice's wasnt all too bad either)parts were pretty good. But i still likef the brodway vetsion of those more. You're so right about lack of humor. And "Meet the plasticsa" with only Regina's lines... "Stupid with love" without energy and humorous tone...i can not... Its so bizarre. Performers definitely can sing. But music and style of most songs are so weird.

I work in cinemas so most of the time it takes a lot to get me to go to one to watch a movie. But I have caught Sexy and Rather be Me while on the job and rather liked how the latter played out. But part of that could be that a lot of it is done as if it were a single shot or at most 3. Yes in reality it is a lot more but they did a good job faking it and that boosted my opinion. Tho Moana's vocals seemed good even without the camera trickery

They went way too far away from what the musical is! The characters have very little time to get to know each other or have connection. The songs are so low energy most of the time it’s insane! I shook my head almost the whole time. I love the musical but this movie messed it up.
