Rachel McAdams opens up to ‘Variety’ about why she turned down the opportunity to reunite with her former co-stars, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert, for a recent ‘Mean Girls’-inspired commercial.
@@anniesok868how is she stuck up her nose she literally said she’s never done commercials before. Imagine being asked to reprise a 20 year old role just for a commercial, she said she’d be down if it was movie since it’s her bag since she’s not familiar with commercials. Plus due to her status it would be kind of a downgrade.
I think its weird that the Producers just took her NO at face value and didn't call her back and say hey we respect your choice but your entire cast is coming back, or even why didn't the other actors reach out? were they not allowed to? I just feel it was handled horribly especially knowing Rachel might have been more open knowing the other cast was there.
@@dandylion2279 lol it's not "lame", kiddo; it's called being tactful. Once you go big in Hollywood, you might have to go tell some projects off because you don't get paid enough to do it. And what Rachel said is how you say exactly that without offending anyone involved. Sure, everyone knows it's the money that wasn't enough, but they also know that she's not being crass or rude about it.
If she’d known at the jump that Lohan, Chabert and Seyfried were coming back I think she would have jumped at it. It’s a shame those commercials were really funny but I can respect her decision
Rachel is basically saying “I don’t live in the past and hate doing the same thing over and over - it was cool in 2005 but im also almost 20 years older now.”
Hell it was 2004, so it was 20 years ago, I guess she’s done with it now. It kind of reminds me of when Kim Cattral turned down the sex and the city reboot
I would love to see a sequel with the characters at this stage of their lives. Surely if they can make these ads so funny and engaging they can do the same with a sequel. Please give us the sequel
I watched all the commercials back to back and they were awesome! They literally went right back into character and it wasn’t forced at all, it was so good and felt like no time had passed. If someone would have told me that there was going to be a remake or sequel or anything with meangirls but with no Regina George in it, than I would have thought it would be a bust but honestly it turned it so good that I didn’t even notice that Regina was missing. They should totally do an actual movie with them as the older characters and just have Regina move away or die off or something, I guarantee it will be a hit. I also love Rachel Mcadams too and think she is an amazing actress. I think she heard Walmart commercial and thought, hell no! But now that she seen how great it turned out and how much the fans loved it, I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t have at least a tiny bit of regret she didn’t do it. I mean I didn’t imagine it would turn out that good but they left me wanting more.
@@mananimal3644how does not feeling comfortable doing a commercial, something she's never done & has never had ANY interest in, translate to being stuck up? It doesn't. You're a child. It actually speaks to her integrity that she didn't do something she absolutely didn't want to just for a paycheck. She's only just recently even started working again; she just did her first movie in years. Why would she do a commercial when she hasn't even been doing films? She took a break for a reason. It's okay for people to say NO to things; it's actually healthy. And she VERY CLEARLY said she would do another movie; she also clearly said that she was never informed that her former costars were even participating, so why would she want to do the commercial on her own about a collaborative film when she doesn't want to do commercials in the first place? Make sense. She doesn't have to do commercials for money she doesn't need if she doesn't want to.
@@mananimal3644 😂😂😂😂🤦🏻♀️you’re a joke. Filming a silly 2 minute commercial based on a movie she did nearly 20 years ago, for a gross big box company that is infamous for treating its employees terribly and selling questionably-made merch, and shooting a scripted film that actually means something to her, that’s an original work of art, that takes months or years to complete, and is a ton of work is not even remotely the same thing. Like I said, you’re all acting like petty little children. You’re not actually in high school, no matter how much you obsess over a dumb movie. Commercial work & film work are two entirely different scenarios. Use your brain.
@@mananimal3644 And you’re a fool, because NO ONE was in the musical that was in the film, because A) they’re all in their 30s & 40s, B) Rachel hasn’t been doing much of anything for the past few years, she took a long break, & has only recently done a film again; SHE DIDN’T WANT TO. & C) NO ONE ELSE DID EITHER! They all are busy working and also have all had a lot going on in their personal lives. No one was cast, because no one was asked. And they would’ve said no anyway. You understand not all actors ever even aspire to do stage, right? 😳🙄🤦🏻♀️🤮
I did wonder why she didn't do the commercial too. Its pretty sad that she could've done it had maybe her own team told her the entire cast was going to do it. Plus, I am surprised Lindsay, Amanda and Lacey didn't reach out and convince her to do it. It probably would've been more complete had Rachel done it as well. Hopefully in the future all four of them will reunite in a cameo or movie someday.
Lindsay, Amanda and Lacey seem closer, and once they heard Rachel didn't wanna do it they prob just didn't want to bother and be annoying "begging" her to do it
Why are you surprised that people you don’t know that we reach out to somebody else you don’t know ? Somebody could’ve told them that everybody was doing it.
She already said years ago that she wouldn’t do anything to reprise that role under any circumstance. She talked about how she was older than what her character was when she played the role, so now that she is even older she would only want to take on more mature roles. This isnt the first or last time she will turn down playing this role again
It's not reprising that role though. She doesn't have to play a teen anymore, I don't know if you've noticed but the other girls have also grown up in the commercials.
she can do whatever she wants, the commercials were still very well done and it was amazing seeing the other girls together. such a classic movie with an amazing cast
What they should do is create a tv show or another movie of them on them all grown up living their lives with their kids as parents. The commercials were really great because you can still see their character traits coming out. It should just be a bigger project. I think everyone loved the original cast, and no one could ever really take their places.
but that kind of paints an picture that women are always supposed to be married, have children and start families when they get a certain age and it honestly paints a negative view on womanhood. & this is coming from a traditional girl who wants a family and to be a homemaker one day. women are SO much more than our ability to reproduce and not all women want, or are even meant to be married or have families. it’s just not in everyone’s story and showing that in almost every single movie or show reboot will just continue to push that narriative on young girls and women all over the world, and they’ll see that thinking that’s what they’re supposed to be.
@@angel-fk6rnthanks for this comment. the commercials kinda grossed me out for this very reason. none of the plastics seemed like they would be interested in having traditional lives anyway.
@@ToriHarris-lb6zgI feel like Gretchen is the only one who is raising a child in the commercial and Cady and Karen are both child-free. But I would really like to see a movie or a TV Show about their lives as adults! We need to see more shows about glamorous women that are child-free!
These commercials are literally the best adverts of all time, I mean in terms of adverts from the past 10 years there’s literally no competition but still, These Walmart Mean Girls commercials probably have the most views, Rachel was missing out, Ofc if she didn’t wanna do it she didn’t want to do it, but I’m glad that all the other cast members didn’t feel to big to reprise their roles, they looked like they had so much fun
If I’m being honest I can’t see how they would add Regina to the commercial. It’s weird to see her settle down like Gretchen did but odd that she’s not taken you know? And Regina would definetly move away and become some big star or just travel. So not having her is like rumours start again like “where is she” whic makes it more iconic.
She was very likely asked first and before everyone else, since she was the biggest breakout character of the film, and they were probably gauging interest the project. It makes NO SENSE for HER to reach back out to them, they should have done that; for all she knew, they axed the entire idea because she said "no". Y'all are weirdly projecting a lot of hostility & anger towards an artist who chooses what she does very carefully, and only just started even doing films again (one); she took a break from everything for years. It speaks to her integrity as an artist that she didn't do it just for a paycheck, when she didn't want to. Commercials are an entirely different ballgame than filmmaking, and it's definitely not for everyone. Stop being weird. She has stated multiple times she would do another film. That's really all that matters.
Amanda Seyfried was the biggest breakout, she's the one with an Emmy at home lol@@Free420Love production prob just figured they didn't need Rachel for the commercial cuz the other 3 were game.
how does not feeling comfortable doing a commercial, something she doesn't enjoy & has no interest in, translate to being stuck up? It doesn't. Too many of you are acting like spoiled children who didn't get what they wanted & are throwing little tantrums. Grow up. Why TF would she do a commercial for freaking black Friday/holiday deals for a big box store!? Literally NO ONE actually WANTS to do that. NO ONE. They do it for a paycheck, plain & simple. It actually speaks to her integrity that she didn't do something she absolutely didn't want to just for a paycheck that she doesn't need. She's only just recently even started working again; she just did her first movie in years. Why would she do a commercial when she hasn't even been doing films? She took a break for a reason. Make sense. She was definitely who they contacted first to gauge interest, so it absolutely makes sense she didn't know anyone else was involved. If they REALLY wanted her, they would have reached back out repeatedly, but I'm guessing that once they got everyone else on board, they decided that was good enough, and didn't actually want her anymore, because they didn't want to shell the money out for her if they didn't think they had to anymore. Guarantee that's what happened. Do better, y'all. You sound like you all are still IN high school.🙄😳🤦🏻♀️
Absolutely I swear people find opportunities to judge people, I bet they are so excited judging Rachel cause she said no to something they want soo bad for Rachel to look stuck up cause they simply like to hate/judge on celebs like Rachel Mcadams, shame on them! And why is his even news worthy she said no so what!? Rachel McAdams doesn't care, this is a very petty thing to talk about and there acting like they are sooo holy and righteous and there doing a good deed by claiming Rachel is stuck up when Rachel is living her best life making decisions however she likes, and they don't like that, I bet it's hard to hang out with people like them, sorry for the rant I just hate it when people get so invested negatively in something that is sooo small, I 💯 percent agree with you though, the Internet and media is a hard place 🙄😒
you don't think Walmart had the money? lol everyone who did it clearly got a BIG bag out of it, the commercials seem like they had a very decent budget too
I think this has to do more than just the commercial. Because she didn't even show up in the reunion that they had a couple of years ago either when it was with one of the news anchors, I forgot who it was exactly, but I remembered that she was not there, and she was the only one of the main characters that was not there..
I don’t blame her. She’s in the running for another Oscar nomination this year with ‘Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret.” If Amanda was in the running for another Oscar nomination this year, she wouldn’t have done it either. They’ve both become critically acclaimed actresses in the past 20 years, and rehashing an old role (from 19 years ago) for a Walmart commercial, makes them seem like they’re desperate for cash. They’re not. They get to choose their roles now. Amanda only did it because she doesn’t have to worry about awards season this year.
that's a whole lot of assumption based on nothing, if anything the commercial would give her more exposure and during voting season. nothing wrong with celebrating one of the most popular movies ever, is George Clooney "desperate for cash" cuz he does Nespresso commercials etc? lol and Amanda definitely would've done it either way, she's been vocal about wanting to reprise her role and reunite with the others for ages.
it's cultural codes @@dandylion2279 in France you'd never catch actors that big in supermarket commercials. Precisely for this reason. This walmart one was a big wtf moment for me as I'm not used to it (though I was happy to see their faces). And yes brand deal are easy cash for celebs (doesn't mean they never do it for fun though, but it is selling your brand reputation and what you think you're worth)
Amanda won Golden globe for the Dropout last year and was not above to make a reunion. Also Rachel's movie isn't nominated for an Oscar so the whole argument kind of invalid.
@@NK-qx6kk I wrote that comment over a month ago when she was on every shortlist for Best Supporting Actress. That’s why my comment says “she’s in the running for another nomination” and not “she’s just received an Oscar nomination.” It’s also why it says “1 month ago” next to the comment. The actual nominations only came out like 10 days ago. My point still stands. You don’t want to be doing Walmart commercials in the weeks leading up to award season when you have to be campaigning.
@@jas0206 Campaigning? lmao. Give it up. This is not the Iowa Caucus. Reprising their Mean Girls roles would do nothing to detract from award nominations. If anything it would remind the Academy how versatile all these ladies are and how this work they did 20 years ago is still beloved and iconic today. That's more impressive than any interview or appearance on late night television. This may have technically been a commercial, but their roles did not come from the commercial. They're iconic movie roles that they are reprising in support of the Mean Girls sequel. It's not about Walmart. Also, Rachel may have been on shortlists but I don't think anyone really expected her to be nominated. The competition was too stiff.
I mean she didn’t appear during the Mean Girls Reunion zoom interview, meanwhile the rest of them did. I always thought she wanted to distance herself from the cast & movie, which is sad considering she played such an iconic character ❤. Anyways, hopefully she does come back in a commercial with all of them ❤
The cast and the writers of the Mean Girls are Saturday Night Live people… I think not inviting Regina was part of the humorous skit. Rachel gave a hint of it by saying “she was not informed on time” just like when Cady set up a party and not invite Regina.
what's so embarrassing about commercials it's a legit acting gig? people are so weird lol and if the problem is Walmart then so working for a big company like them is "bad" / low brow, but doing Marvel movies clearly for the Disney check is not? lmfao
@@dandylion2279 it’s just different. It’s a 30-second slot to sell stuff. There’s not much acting to do, and everything is exaggerated to the max. Not a lot of actors get to be selective. The fact that she has the power to turn it down is awesome.
But I mean, it's kind of true. Although Amanda Seyfried has also been nominated for an Academy Award (like Rachel) but she seems more open to memorializing "Mean Girls" still, while Rachel has always been annoyed at being associated with it.
Y'all are acting like a bunch of children. She literally left the biz for years and only just released her first film in a long while. She's very picky on the work she chooses to do, as a lot of actors are. It's her art, she gets to choose what she is interested & drawn to. She's a film star. She clearly said yes to the movie, and has multiple times. Most people don't have an interest in a Walmart commercial, especially one promoting black Friday deals & whatnot, and they only do it for the paycheck. Good on her for not just taking the check. She was certainly the first person contacted about the project, so, no, she didn't lie, it makes absolute sense that she wouldn't have been told anyone else was involved, because they would have been gauging her interest & trying to decide if they even move forward, and would have contacted the others after her. You're being weird.
@@Free420Love You obviously know her best, you are her bestie after all😂!! Thank you for the lecture mom, 😂!! She can do whatever she wants, but she can drop the “oh if I would have known act, I would have loved to participate”. She was informed just like everyone else.
So none of the actresses talk to each other... or did they just freeze Rachel out.... hard to believe she did not know they were all signed up to do it.
I'm confused - was the Mean Girls reunion movie being advertised prior to casting? Of course I'll want to see the movie and of course I'd love seeing the original cast featured in it and of course Tina Fey's involvement is great...I hope more details surface on ET so I can be less confused (and see more footage of all of these stars).. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
That’s not the first time she misses out on great opportunities 😢 her management must suck I remember she was asked before the marvel movie fever started to be one of the main characters but she looked down at it and when it became as huge as we know it now she took a small supporting role in dr strange 🫤
Yeah I get the same energy from this decision. She or her team probably thought it wasn't going to be succesful, so they decided to stay out of it... and then get involved anyway once it has blown up.
Keep in mind that Rachel didn’t want Mean Girls either and she actually wanted the part of Cady because she wanted to be the star of the film. Tina Fey casted her as Regina which is technically a supporting character and Rachel didn’t like that so they elevated her by making her character the Queen Bee of the whole school.
She always does that. She also turned down the Devil Wears Prada role offered to her that Anne Hathaway had to auditioned for. And then the movie became one of the most iconic in movie history. Where is Anne now and where is she now? Oh well, whatever floats her boat!
Why are you so angry over what a grown woman decides to do. She already stated multiple times she’s never wanted to be super famous which is why she doesn’t even have social media and never goes to any events, even the ones she’s nominated for. She lives a pretty humble life and you’re over here crying because she didn’t shoot a Walmart commercial while she was on her honeymoon
Oh good grief Rachel🙄. I normally don't like sequel but i think this would be a good one. If that happens, hopefully Rachel will be apart of it the Movie would be a hit Im sure.
My 2nd date with this girl in Glendale took me and i was like “omg” 😑… but it ended up being one of the funniest movies of all time! Thank goodness all my other friends gf’s had taken them too😂
