Ah... you know, every astronaut that goes to the International Space Station drinks recycled water. There is a community near San Diego that was built around water recycling back in the 70's. There is nothing new about drinking TOILET WATER. Well, I guess it is news if you are an IGNORANT REPUBLICAN that only watches FOX.

i'm in california and * I * would be okay with recycled water ('specially since we also have an osmosis filtration system installed in our kitchen), but the yuppies along the coastal lines are too squeamish when it comes to practicalities. it's the same with a lot of foodstuffs as well, iirc.

Yeah, the water on the ISS is better than what comes out of the tap. Astronauts say it's perfect, but of course, they don't take chances with it. The same people who maintain the equipment have to drink it, so they're careful. The real problem is, Americans don't trust their institutions, including the Water Dept.

Singapore and many other countries have been cleaning, processing and drinking wastewater for many years and it’s great. I wager it’s safer than water sent through aging pipes leaking lead or whatever. I know the knee jerk reaction is ‘this is a little gross’ but amidst climate change and impending water crises worldwide, let’s be responsible about how we discuss methods to make potable water.
@Jedi_Vigilante
@Jedi_Vigilante 6 месяцев назад
As somebody who is actually training to work in Advanced Water Treatment (specifically San Diego's Pure Water Program), the worries about water quality are entirely baseless. After the water is cleaned, we actually have to ADD things to it. Otherwise, the water is so pure, it actually destroys the pipework due to it lacking certain minerals. The treatment program is better than what astronauts use in space to recycle their water. If it is good enough for astronauts, you'd think people would think it is good enough for them... especially since ours is better.

I would agree, but for one issue; if the wastewater is being recycled, it's not going back to where it went before. So the water table is going to be Even Drier. It's not like wastewater just magically disappeared! In routing it back into the pipes, they're taking it away from somewhere else.

@alexanderburns4616
@alexanderburns4616 6 месяцев назад
@@Mythralblade04the water already doesn't go back to where it was taken from. While the water is in our pipes and bottles it isn't in nature's water cycle either, when we use it currently we put it back in the ground but we have to take new water from somewhere else to replace it. Since it will never be possible to return everything we take, this will reduce how much and how often we need to take water, this doesn't keep more water out of the water cycle, it keeps the same water out for longer.

California’s water rights system is deeply broken, and Nestle just takes advantage of that. Even so, their usage is dwarfed by agriculture use, and public drinking water. That said, those users are mostly in the Central Valley. The real beneficiaries of this change is SoCal: most of our water is imported, and those sources have long been drying up. With this change LA will finally be able to meet its water needs locally with minimal imports. That, in turn, has huge implications for places like Mono Lake and the Owens Valley - all good things.

There’s a reason the LA River is mostly channelized like it is: we get monsoonal rains, and the amount of water those generate is *staggering*. Before the Army channelized the LA River the entire city would flood frequently, killing a lot of people. That hasn’t happened since…but it means we throw away all that fresh water. It’s a challenge!

Interestingly, San Francisco’s water supply is one of the few in the US that is so pure it doesn’t need to be filtered (though it’s still *treated*, which is different - everyone has to do that). In their case, it literally comes from Yosemite National Park’s Hetch Hetchy valley. The other cities are New York (yes, really!), Seattle, and Portland. Basically all those systems also have the benefit of being entirely gravity fed, meaning they’re cheaper to run, far better for the environment and air quality, and produce carbon-free hydroelectric power. The big beneficiary of this change is SoCal, which has to import nearly all its water from Northern California or the Colorado River using thousands of miles of canals and dozens of pumping stations, largely powered by natural gas. Being able to recycle water not only means we don’t have to worry about an earthquake cutting those sources off, but also means we save a TON of energy moving water, and can let that water stay near its source and restore the habitats there.

There have already been cities and counties in California reusing water. I think that finding an inexpensive desalination technique of ocean water is probably a good solution, as well. Once the oceans rise after the poles melt, California will have the Central Valley flood into a state-size lake (like it used to have), and the weather would be more humid.

Sewage treatment plants already typically route the treated water into local waterways, many of which supply drinking water. The only change, I assume, would be taking it back directly so it doesn't have the change to escape into the ground/air/sea.
@kilodeltaeight
@kilodeltaeight 5 месяцев назад
That’s essentially all this changes: we can directly reuse recycled water now, vs. having to inject it into ground wells first. Ever watch Star Trek? Becuase the building that stands in for Starfleet Academy is actually a wastewater recycling plant in Los Angeles, with gorgeous Japanese style gardens out front. That water is routed to either the nearby “spreading grounds” owned by the water utility to be reintroduced to the aquifer, or it’s sent into the LA River to support the re-wilded portions downstream.

It's problematic in multiple ways. Your envisioned tidally driven system will not produce anywhere near the amount that they need. What's more, it would generate large amounts of concentrated salty brine. It may seem ridiculous compared to the volume of the ocean, but when you start desalinating at a large scale you start expelling super concentrated salt water and messing with the water near the shore. California needs to come to terms with the fact that it is a desert.

In houston at a kroger in my area I was drinking some gatorade and when in the middle of drinking it it started to taste like piss. not to mention an entire area where we live the drinks at restaurants are pure motor oil. some restaurants that serve lemonade not from the soda machine like raising canes may not have this problem. but the water at the soda machines is horrible. it also happened at time cantina in our area. putrid levels of motor oil. I just left it at the table and left. admittedly the amount of motor oil at the raising canes was hard to detect. It tasted flat and had a bad aftertaste but it tasted like they werent using a filter. there was tons of strange stuff in the drink. I don't know what the water department did but whatever renovation they made made things worse. although it really should be illegal to serve drinks at a restaurant without a filter. theyre not exactly expensive.

You seem to think that the water in the soda machine comes from a different place than the water they would use to make the lemon at Raising Cane's. You would be mistaken. Inexpensive water filters basically work by the placebo effect. They aren't really effective, but most places have quality water filtration so it doesn't matter. You think they're having an effect because they have a pack of minerals that they dissolve in the water to change the taste, but they're not really removing dangerous stuff. Now you could go with a reverse osmosis system, but that's expensive and it actually wastes more water because it has to use water to flush itself out regularly.
