Been using PBI for 3 years and I never actually bothered looking into the difference between calculated columns and measures. Great explanation, and it makes sense. You would want to use a Calc Column if the calculation isn't required to happen on demand and in real time. You just create the column, and that's the end of it. Whereas measures are more optimal for doing *actual* calculations.

Great explanation. Thank you. Quick question. You used a measure to display total qty per customer. The column used in the measure could have been dragged in instead and isn't a calculated column (it already existed in the model). Was this just for demo purposes or do the performance benefits you described apply here also?

Firstly, it's always a recommended best practice to create a measure and use them in the analysis rather than dragging the naked column/field from data model. Those columns can only be helpful in the initial level of analysis but what-if one needs to construct the complex analysis then in that case, those base measures which are created in the data model will help in creating the secondary level of measures. As far as performance benefits is concerned, one needs to understand first how the model is reacting and learn the basic fundamentals of Power BI before diving deep further into the performance analysis. Why do you need to create a measure to calculate the quantity when you can just drag and drop the quantity field from the sales table? does it make things quicker?

Hello Tuvshinjargal Narankhuu, Thank You for posting your query onto our channel. When you drag the "Quantity" field/column from the data table directly they're known as "Implicit Measures" and they can only perform basic functions such as SUM, MIN, MAX, AVERAGE, etc but they cannot help you perform some advanced analysis for that you'll be required to write the measures. Below are some of the reasons mentioned why one should write measures rather than referring implicit measures - You cannot control what an implicit measure does beyond the basics. Sum, Count, etc. You cannot reuse an implicit measure. Say you want to have a Sales measure, a COGS measure, and a Margin measure. If you write explicit measures as follows: Sales = SUM( Table[Sales] ) COGS = SUM( Table[COGS] ) Margin = [Sales] - [COGS] Now you are reusing explicit measures in step #3. If you had not created those, you would have to write this: Margin = SUM( Table[Sales] ) - SUM( Table[COGS] ) Believe it or not, #3 and #5 are not the same thing. #3 wraps in implicit calculate around each measure, #5 does not, so to be accurate, #5 has to be #7 to produce intended results. Margin = CALCULATE(SUM(Table[Sales])) - CALCULATE(SUM(Table[COGS])) If you go to the trouble to add conditional formatting or other field settings, like a custom number format with an implicit measure then you decide you want to tweak the formula for that measure, you cannot. You have to now create an explicit measure with your correct formula To help you understand it better. Sir. Why you have put in Sum X function (sales table first & related table in 2nd argument) Can't we change the order as we are multiplying product * price or price * product will give the same results

Hello DIVYA MEHTA, thank you for posting your query onto our channel. Well, if you observe the "SUMX()" function it's like - SUMX( Table, Expression) so in the given video we've referenced the Sales table as a first argument and then the columns from the respective tables are referenced as a second argument. If you try to do something like this - Total Sales = SUMX( Sales, RELATED( Products[Current Price] ) * Sales[Quantity] ) Still you'll get the same results because table is referenced only once and columns are only interchanged will referencing it. So yes, you can change the order but it's a best practice to maintain the order while writing the formula.
