If you need any help building an ice rink visit us at IronSleek.com or call our office at (877) 825-2334. This video covers measuring Grade for a Backyard Ice Rink using a line level.
you never mentioned the shorter stake by the first stake , i guess its to anchor the string solid ? Great video thanks for posting , helped me out alot .
Most don't know, that water level is how we know the Earth isn't a sphere, but a motionless flat plain. An ancient water level method would be just as accurate as the laser. You could even calibrate the laser, because water is that accurate at reveling level. And could care less about a theory of gravity.
Anybody else notice at 1:00 when he first tells us about "a 20 by 46 standard rink" how it seems that he was annoyed and swatting a bug on the back of his head. Then, the second time he tells us about it at 2:14 that it seems like his most hated nemesis just spat in his grandmothers face behind camera. He even does this underbite that reminds me of when my dad was angry at us kids but we were in front of people and as soon as they turned their heads we would get a glaring look with this EXACT same underbite that said, "WAIT TILL WERE AWAY FROM THE PUBLICS EYES!!!" HAHAHA!!! Maybe it's just me but the man seems like a VERY angry individual that needs some help and maybe a little bit of medication. He could be a HUGE teddy bear in real life...idk...but I'm sure his kids would admit otherwise...away from the public's view at least. Lol. I know those eyes too well. Sorry for the run-on sentences peeps.
I would have beat you in front of everybody so you knew next time you were not going to get away with being a brat in public because you thought nothing was going to happen to you.
Great video! After you get your first level reading take off the line level and turn it around and remount it. If you're still level then your line level is accurate. This trick works on any type of spirit level.
I used to work for this one company, and the Foreman never trusted string levels. He would rather use a straight edge with a 4 foot level on top smh...
craydul can’t really disagree with him. A laser transit is the way to go. Be really careful with very tight strings if you need to use a line level. Also keep the stretches short.
I don't blame him either. The issue with bubble levels is that the bubble is smaller than the lines, and unless you look at the aperature dead square from the same reference perspetive, you're going to be off. For short runs, i'd say a bubble level is ok, but when you start getting into 10, 20,30, 40+ foot runs, that few degrees of error and reading error gets magnefied, and your layout is wrong. For long runs, a laser is where it's at. for short runs, bubble level is acceptable. i also use a water level for when i have to project a line beyond an obstruction to the laser. I work with piers and pilings quite often and need to transfer level marks quickly.
Excellent demo. I need it for my patio. My dad taught me how to use a clear (see through) hose with water to mark level. But your method is much easier and more accurate.
Go to your home center to the measuring/marking aisle. They will have high-visibility nylon string specifically for this purpose. Look up Essential Craftsman on RU-vid, and watch his vid on tying of a string line. It'll be guitar-string taut.
He is showing different ways of measuring. He has another video where he shows how to use the laser level. Also you need to put a liner down after making the plastic rink.
