I don't know if it's still a thing nowadays but Sea Turtles and Manatee were still eaten in parts of the Caribbean in the 1970s and 80s. Turtle steak tastes great. Manatee is literally sea pork. Growing up in a third world country is a little bit like being a pirate. I hope my parents didn't endangered too many species for the sake of my nutrition.

If some theories are to be believed, early European explorers of the Americas did far worse to manatees than eat them.

Probably not manatee since they were endangered until very recently

Nah your good the stuff they say is endangered is just because rich people don’t want the poors to eat them all 😂

Imagine how powerful European harpoonmen would be if they had atlatls.
@indalcecio
@indalcecio Год назад
The Atlatl relies on the spear/arrow being made of green (not dried) hardwoods or softwood. European harpoons were usually made of what they had in abundance, so lots of white oak, ash, chestnut, etc... Which dont work very well with the atlatl once dry, which surprisingly happens very quickly on a ship, or realistically by the time the ship is underway. I do think making smaller harpoons out of yew could work very well, but we'll probably never know, I suppose.

@@indalcecio Not even if you tiller the darts? Then, though, I'd imagine they'd be somewhat more frail and perhaps disposable, at least in the shaft of the dart. You could then perhaps get more from what wood you might have if it didn't involve too much carving if you knew what thickness you needed to start with so that the dart could bend as you need.

What about incense? In ancient times it was worth as much as gold because of how deserate people were to get away from all of the stink of no soap and deodorant. I never hear of anyone discussing whether or not pirates had any use/value for it due to none of them having deodorant with 100 men crowded onto a ship built for 30. Sorry for it being a bit off-topic from the vid.
