Mech Warrior 4 On Linux And Steam Deck Lutris Video Guide

So in today's video I will walk you though using lutris to set up Mech Warrior 4. If you get prompted for .mono and you don't install it or the game does not work reset the prefix and install .mono.
Besides that commands to install lutris and link for the write up if you wanna follow it instead is bellow.

sudo apt-get install lutris

Checking in! Mechwarrior 4 is now able to run the movies using runner Proton 9 beta! After install as shown on video, configure the file runner to proton 9 beta and remove /gosnovideo from the game options arguments line. Make sure you have /gosnovideo in a text file somewhere in case of any changes to proton, you can still add back that argument line. TLDR: 1) remove /gosnovideo 2) Proton 9 Beta 3) Play with movies videos!

One small correction!!! .mono might be needed if you run into issue's just delete the prefix folder and set it up again making sure to install .mono that time. When I re-imaged my steam deck and installed a new .ssd I had to use .mono. Also the option with having 2 dg-voodo options in the auto-config is the same on the deck but I think it don't matter which you choose. Any way hope this video helps out and as always credit to the creator for the great write up be sure to check it out as well. Also stay tuned I know there are dozens of ssd installation videos for the steam deck but I did record it so I might make a video for it on the channel for those interested.

Don't think I ever done mechcommander 2 but I can try to look into it. Right now trying to get some other older games going like robot arena 1 and 2 lol.

Unfortunately, the instructions in this video/the original page do not work for me. I get an error that states the following: Nested Exception! - Cause: 'GetProcessorDetails' Error: "Attempt to read from address 0x00000094" at 0x6fabaa The cause above makes me wonder what're the specs of the PC you're running--and, of course, if you have any ideas regarding how to get past this error.

I am running a gtx 1070 with a i7 cpu and like 12gb of ram it nothing wild I had the game run on my laptop which sucks before and its specs are no where near as good as my main pc or steam deck. Where did you download the game from so I can try to test on my end? If I had to take a guess something on lutris end is not set up right but if I can test the download your using it would narrow it down.

I would definitely like to know if Lan/Online fixes are available. Also is the menu video turn off for a reason?

The old .dll files required to run them are no longer provided by wine you either got to mod them in or turn the videos off in order to get the game to run the intro video needs to be turned off with the argument /gosnovideo. I have read a forum years ago about being able to convert the video files to a new format that the game can both use and that wine would not have issues with. I also remember being able to play with lan under wine back in the day if a windows machine hosted so I think there is a way to get it going under linux I will provide updates if I get either of these figured out for sure. :D

I messed around and the only thing it has to be done is wait until Proton GE get updated for the MPG format or somehow get wine to enable quartz.dll and ffdshow (I'm guessing) -- Got sidetracked and I looked up Mechwarrior 4 wayback machine, I saw that the game used to be able to host up to 24 players. That is so cool! Anyway, seeing the game working really good on the steam deck without the video, I won't jinx it and leave it alone unless there's a fix in the future. As for the multiplayer, it not working for me and I don't have a steam deck dock to test even getting a signal from the host side. Anyway, thanks for the update.@@everythingdigital1

Hi, Is it possible, to install "Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance" directly from the original DVD on Linux and play it with the Saitek X-52 Hotas?

I believe the hotas will be recognized as a gamepad it should just work. I think but since I don't have one I can not say for sure. As of the dvd yes but it might need patches. I would put the dvd in set up lutris just like I did in the video and point the .exe to the setup.exe on the dvd. And after it is installed take note of the install directory. Then go back into lutris change the setup.exe to the games launcher just like I showed in the video. If you can't get original dvd I believe the game is freeware now and you can find a copy online as well. Also sorry for the late reply been out all day on my end just got back in.

On a second look you might need a 3rd party app for the hotas as well. I would need to know what linux install you are running debian or arch based. Then I can send you a link to the proper driver thing you might need to install for them to work.

@@everythingdigital1 Thank you very much for the quick and very detailed response. I am not running a Linux system yet, but with Microsofts growing greed for data, especially in Windows 11, the day will maybe come, to switch to Linux. So i will test this first on a older PC, to get familiar with Linux.

There are some online already but I still suggest to make your own layout for this game even mine does not cover all the controls. But if I got the time I can upload it sometime then today maybe.
