Mechanic Reacts to Jeep Fails 

Hey northern Canadian here. The first clip is a perfect example of why snow tires are so important in the snow. Off road tires are designed to “paddle” through dirt and mud for traction. Snow tires are designed to hold snow to the tire. The friction between snow on snow is much higher than snow on rubber. Long story short, the Toyota was able to get traction due to the simple fact he had snow tires (tires with tread that doesn’t have too much empty space to hold snow).

In the first video Justin very quickly points out the problem with the Jeep. The tires are shedding the snow instead of packing into the tread gaps, like the Toyota’s tires. Dedicated winter tires have sipes that hold snow which provides superior grip over big knobbies.

The death wobble can happen to any truck with a solid front axle, it usually means you need to do some maintenance to your steering components.

It's never ceased to amaze me that jeep people spend thousands of dollars and don't even take the jeeps off road, what's the point?

As a resident of east tn, i completely understand the mall crawler sentiment. We get invaded by the jeep crawl every year, plus locals. And ive become convinced theres some kind of starter pack for em. Painted handles/hinges, "grrr face", obnoxious headlights, gadsden flag stickers/plates, and the giant jack thats never been used because the base is pristine. 😂 I still would totally buy a 80- 90s cherokee for winter though.

Growing up in the mountains, I always loved to see how many Jeeps got stuck in snow. Your lifted Wrangler with mud tires doesn't mean you can tackle winter conditions.

7:00 I saw a wrangler no doors no top or nothing and it was pissing rain. I was also pissing myself laughing. The dude's wife/gf was in the passenger seat absolutely freaking out.

A trick for snow that I learned is that the best path is the path that no one has taken because after enough times, those 2 clear lanes where you think your tires are on pavement are actually on snow packed into ice. So if it's fresh snow, good traction, if it's been driven over, it might be ice

10:25 this is what we at dealerships deal with constantly from customers complaining about, its a grand cherokee and the radios are all having that delamination problem over time

I experienced the death wobble riding shotgun in my buddies old CJ going 75mph on a highway over pass once. Legit one of the scariest moments I've ever had on the road. We got off the high way as soon as we could and rode home with a friend. You don't know true fear until you narrowly avoid flying off the side of a high way 100 feet off the ground lol.

Nolan: "Almost like a tractor." The old MBs, CJ-2As, and I believe the CJ-3Bs as well, had implements that you could hook up to them and use them like a tractor.

I know on M1 Abrams tanks that get mired that bad (sunk into mud), you have to tie a log or something to a track piece and 'drive' the log all the way under the tracks to relieve the vacuum caused by moving it.

a trick i learned a while back about death wobble in jeeps is that a lot of time you can stop it with new parts but it will come back. it tends to be that the steering box is loose and able to wobble around which transfers the wobble to the wheels. tightening the steering box bolts will often times solve the problem

There is a reason rally cars use thin tires with spikes and not giant offroad tires, here in Norway most people outside the cities use spiked winter tires and ambulances has special tires with much more spikes then permitted on regular cars.

Hi real Canadian here. That first jeep issue is the posi rear end wants to slide to the low spot of the road. Also it's not deep treads that help in snow but rubber that stays soft in cold

That monsoon is in Ruidoso, New Mexico! They roll in fast but I bet he only had to wait 15 minutes or so for it to clear up. Love seeing a small town local clip!

I had that same gen 4runner and the traction control in those things is the greatest system I've ever experienced. It instantly reduces power to the exact amount needed to not allow wheelspin instead of using brake vectoring. It allows it to very easily manage ice, snow, and sugar sand.

Speaking of Fiats.... on this side of the pond there's an epic little legend called the Fiat Panda 4x4. The old one... not that the new iteration is bad but the old one was epic. I remember a friend of mine coming to drop his boat at the lake and he would just plough through and get his boat on the water and then get back out while way bigger cars like defenders and jeeps were stuck in the sand.

I once used a tie down strap to pull a car out of snow. It was the holidays and we didn't want our dad to be all pissy about it. I just slapped it on and went very slow. Generally anything is much weaker when it has to deal with shocks. I told my brother "this never happened" and we got there without our parents noticing we were even late. It was pretty sweet.

On the first one: M/T tires suck on road in the winter, big tread blocks have no traction. 4 Runner had BFG KO2 which are 3 peak rated. Death wobble: they don't do that when the tie rods aren't worn out. Fix the worn parts and get an alignment. 11:13 He's sitting on the axles and skid plate. Those were some deep ruts going in. My TJ has 35's and I wouldn't have gone through that. 13:05 Mall Rated means you have low profile tires. Off road tire diameter is at least twice the rim diameter.

As someone from the north of sweden i can tell you that the Jeep in the first clip was slipping in the icy worn down tracks, while the toyota was getting traction on the snowy mid-lines. Also, if you go into the sidelane it will "suck you in" which can be scary as hell if youre going 100-130 kmh

I almost bought a Jeep in high school and one of the selling points was, "Man you can take this whole XJ apart with one 10 mm socket and a screwdriver."

Yeah! Grandpa knows how to tractor. I had a grandpa with a tractor. And I went a few times with him to the forest and back (loaded). And almost the whole forest road was similar to that.

Used to work a a Meijer and one day a kid in a jeep decided to drive up the 2 story mound of snow from plowing the parking lot. Mid you it was April and 60 degrees out (we had a late spring it was the first week of warm weather). He almost made it to the top before he sank into a bowl that had formed from the top melting. I laughed my ass off as he sank up to his doors rooolster tailing pure slush. Last I saw he was sitting on the roll cage calling someone to come get him out.

I find it so funny every time the Donut crew watch a clip of cars in the snow. That's like a normal January day over here in Montreal. That jeep simply didn't have proper winter tires (or all terrain tires rated for winter)

First off, always love starting my RU-vid day off with Angelina's gorgeous smile and contagious laugh. My first time watching her and Natasha together and gotta say, the girls are rulin' and schoolin' on RMS. :) As a Canadian who drives on this shit 5 months a year I can't help but laugh watching people completely fail at driving on snow and/or ice. All the driver has to do is stop spinning his/her tires and take it a bit easier on the accelerator. If you just can't get the hang of easy acceleration then go for winter grips with a full set of metal studs... it will help a bit or just stay off the roads until they are salted/gravelled. I try to stay off the roads for the first few storms because for some reason many seem to forget that ice and snow are slippery, same as last year, and you ALWAYS have to adjust for road conditions.

I think it was about the 3-minute mark Natalie compares snow to mud. I would rather get stuck in snow any day of the winter over mud but I'm also a Mainah. What is basically a giant suction cup holding onto every single part of your tractor but snow will pack and that's it. You might have to smash your way through some ice (compacted snow formed) but at least when you moved a section you have gotten rid of it

I owned a 94 wrangler while I was in high school, loved that thing. As much as I wanted to, didn't do any modifications to it, still had a lot of fun drifting around in shallow mud when I had the chance

For the death wobble it could also be the stabilizer shock

Never air down in snow... that spreads the weight out... Snow tires are narrow on purpose so direct the weight on to the smallest patch possible... I'm Canadian so I would know

That first clip made me chuckle. My Jeep had big nobbly tires like that and had great traction in snow but terrible traction on wet pavement. Slush on the road was the worst. Looks to me like he's having similar issues.

Growing my dad and I had an old 70's, like an real early one. We took the back off so it was a open back pickup essentially. That water never bothered us, the snow was annoying but fun times were had.

I love the jeeps that have the sticker that says" if you can read this, tip me over." The sticker tells it all about the driver.

I like to think that in that last clip, the dude wasn't just driving up a mountain, but that it's actually the driveway to his house.

I've lived in northeast PA all my life and it's crazy how many times I've driven past a jacked up truck stuck in the snow in my toyota corolla w front wheel drive

I loved my Jeep! I had an 81 CJ5 with the engine, trans, and axles out of a 72 Blazer. I took that thing through the tank traps at Ft. Bragg with no problems at all!

I liked Jeeps a lot more back when Wranglers were basically the cheapest new vehicle you could buy. Almost no amenities but even stock you could have a good bit of fun. I look at them now, see the price, look at it again and wonder what happened.

Used to be in a jeep club when I was a kid. Coolest memories is everyone lined up before daylight, all idling getting ready to head out to Coos bay or some jeep fun run or club day. Or Jamboree where all the clubs get together. So much fun. Then I got my own jeep when I was about 24. Most fun vehicle I ever owned.

when u were talking about them having street tires on one of them, ppl used all terrain tires so the could go off road and on road

Tires shmires! In our offroad group we had a guy who did competitions. The day after he got an xj, we all went out, and he went anywhere the rest of us went. We on all the right tires. Him on city tires. That guy just knew how to use the gas pedal and hitting the line perfectly.

I had a '92 YJ. When I got it, the tires had been upsized from the stock 205/75-15s to 235s. I got a KILLER deal on a set of 33/13.5-15s. That little animal never experienced the "Jeep wobble" in the steering until I put the big tires on it. It would begin the wobble at about 47 on the speedometer and stop around about 52. Since this range was about roughly 63 to 70 actual mph and I pretty much exclusively ran on roads limited to a max of 55, I was able to just stay slower than the death wobble range. On the rare occasions when I was on the interstate, since the speed limit was 65 or 70, I was able to get above the shakes and keep it there. When that thing would start the wobble, it shook worse than an alcoholic who hadn't had a drink in a week and a half!

I didn't realize the death wobble was hard to fix for some people. When my Jeep did it I replaced the steering box. That fixed it.

Wonder how sandro would have reacted for the mud incident, and the boys coming in to help.

Used to have an old Comanche pickup. It saw more off-road and snow than pavement and never let me down!

Airing down in snow isn't usually the right move. You want to cut through down to the solid ground underneath so keep them mostly inflated

I've seen the first one. Pretty sure was on MTs. A lot of MTs suck terribly in conditions like that. I don't understand why they are so popular in mountain states like CO. I much prefer ATs with three peak rating out here. Still plenty enough traction for the pretty wimpy mud we usually have out here and generally as good or better than MTs in every other situation.

many decades ago, there was an Australian 'outback adventurer' named Malcolm Douglas. In his final series, he decided, against everyone's advice, to cross a 5 mile mud flat. About 1.5 miles in, his Jeep became axle deep bogged in that very heavy, sticky clay/mud. In short, his film crew nearly died from dehydration/exposure & it cost a small fortune to rescue them.

Man with that first clip even my Focus that I used to have did better than that jeep when I drove it in the snow. That day I saw people sliding into ditches and I just kept my speed steady and kept my line.

My first car at 15 was a used 1974 Jeep CJ5. I never put the top on it. I flooded the entire interior in multiple rivers and creeks, no problems. Had a solid Warn Winch on it, and only had to really get unstuck once. The winch pulled it right out, the electrical system and engine were still running completely under water. It was a beast. Replaced the clutch (and all the other goodies with it) multiple times, but everything else was just stupidly strong. (Hint: Replace it all, and just pull the engine out to make is easier.) Straight 6 258. I wish I still had it. I know that it is still running for the shade tree mechanic that bought it.

I've got one of these, I've only twice not got home in 8 years. Once the water pump sheared and the head cracked. Second the clutch fork broke in half inside the box as they were riveted from the factory. Take lots of self amalgamating tape and cable ties for when the coolant pipes let go. My headlining is the same. Lots of classic p38 bits going on here. Thanks for singing my C5DEPOT flag at NEC classic car show! 😂

THAT WAS NOT A SOFT TOP. He had a sunshade screen on under his hard top which was removed. If he had a soft top (does not remove like a hard, it folds back) he would of folded back into place and been covered. JL’s and JT’s soft top fold into place and do not get removed from the Jeep when you take the “top off”.

I remember seeing that first snow clip months ago, there was a big argument in the comments with jeep defenders getting all huffy and saying " the jeep is more capable because muh angles!" like there wasn't evidence playing ON THE SAME PAGE of offroading being about more than just approach and departure angles. Also that white jeep between two rocks got unfairly pinged here. You can see he was trying to turn his left side on to the rock ,but the front end pushed when he came off the rear rock.

As a jeep owner, I felt like this whole episode was just towards me, it was awesome. 😊

As a woman who offroads, I highly approve of these ladies trash talking.

I had a full size bronco lifted on 37's with lockers and a built motor. Having all four wheels spin in the snow sucks. I could get around way better in two wheel drive. Roads are crowned in the middle for run off, if I hit the gas from a stop sign I'd just slide sideways towards the edge of the road. Edit: said Bronco also experienced death wobble more than once.

Death wobble was an issue with the old VW Bug, too. That's why they had a steering damper. There are plenty of offroad performance places that sell an aftermarket damper for Jeeps. Adding one is a no-brainer.

I would love to see how Angelina and Natasha react to rock bouncers. Especially about throttle control.

When I was broke college student bout 20 years ago, my wrangler headlights and horn stopped working. I used the flood lights on the bumper instead(were bulb lights) and had a bicycle horn attached to the side mirror.😅

Man i love Jeep! Especially wrangler models. I grew up in an 03 rubicon. First vehicle i ever drove. 5spd manual and i was 10. My dad told me as soon as i could get the clutch to the floor he'd teach me. We made so many amazing memories in it from climbing mountains, rock crawling, plowing through mud and snow, getting suck and almost rolling. He would even drift it. Such good times. Cant forget about camping with it too. But i cant stand when people "rice" them and expect to have skill just because they're driving a jeep.I have an RC one and will be getting a full size as soon as i can! Jeep has now turned their brand into an aesthetic only type brand. You buy a Jeep to look like a Jeep, and not to actually use it like they were meant to be used. Otherwise you’d buy a Toyota or other functional brand. Similar to the G Wagon.

I have a 2015 jeep cherokee that I use for very light off reading as well as normal day to day driving with the family. I have never had an issue with it but I have never tried to over push it
