Thank you so much for that. I am in the Coast Guard and studying for my Aviation Selection Test Battery to hopefully get into flight school. This was the only section I really needed to brush up on and it sure did help!

This is a very well presented video. The use of live modeling and fixed graphics is effective. It has been presented with appeal to verbal/linguistic as well as visual/spatial. The use of the logical/mathematical test at mid point before further examination/repetition in appeal to the naturalistic (mower lifting) helps the learner gauge him/herself while providing ample opportunity to master the concept. This is a very skilfully constructed video.

this helped me so much. i was stuck on this one physics problem, and me, uni first year, and my sister, 5th year civil eng, just couldnt get our heads around a simple moving pulley, lol. Thank You So Much!

@mike6413 No, it makes no difference. The pulley isn't acting as a lever, it's effectively dividing the force into two parts - half goes to the frame and the other half to the 'force in' (hand). Pulley diameters would be chosen to suit the application - total weight lifted, type of rope or cable, etc.

You're are awesome! Keep it up! Also, could you make a levers episode, that would help a lot with a test I've got coming up. Thanks.

The diameter of the pulley is the most important part. speed=distance/time The chain on the larger wheel moves on the pulley a greater distance than the part of the chain on the smaller pulley in the same amount of time. Check out the gears on a bicycle sometime, it will become clear.

Its very interesting fact that we can pull wait up using less energy but we calculate total energy used to pull wait up may be equal to the pull up wait without special arrange pulley so no save of energy whether we use big power for some time or less power for long time total power consume will be same. Is it or Not ?

just a question... does the tiny difrence in diameter of the two pulleys from the top really makes a diffrence in the mechanical advantage? the diameters were really close... i dont think it really makes a diffrence... does it?

yea..the total power remains the same......only thing is that we use small amount of energy for longer time than using higher amt of energy for shorter time......hope i'm right.. :)...?

Use more pulleys. Did this in class like 2 years ago, and we had 1 pulley. Then 2, then 4. And if we finished early we would use 8 felt like nothing
@willraytaylor

Nice video! A bit too simplistic. The fixed measure for a pulley system is the velocity ratio not the mechanical advantage, so the velocity ratio is more basic. Also the IN force must be the force needed to MOVE the load, not the force needed to balance the load. The force needed to move the load will be larger because of friction and the weight of the pulley block. etc etc

Its quite simple, What you lose in distance You will win in power.. If you want twice as mutch power, you need twice as mutch rope
