My brother grabbed some Orenz AT mechanical pencils while he was in Japan and I absolutely love them. I used to also write with plain pencils and would always have mechanical ones lead snap on me. This new mechanical one he got for me automatically advances the lead forward as you write and only has a tiny amount poking out while you write. Using 0.5 HB graphite and never worry about advancing or snapping now.
That vintage Japanese pencil is very cool. I really can’t use anything under a 0.9 lead or I break it constantly. My preference is for 2mm lead holders. You can get a variety of lead hardnesses and sone colors too. A few months ago I discovered Ohto lead holders. They are wood bodies with a hexagonal shape like a pencil. ✏️ they do require a sharpener and I carry a small Uni sharpener with me and have one at each spot when I use these pencils. I did finally get some Blackwing pencils and totally get the mystique surrounding them. Quite pleasurable to use. Have you heard of the Kuru Toga pencils that automatically rotate the lead as you use it? I haven’t taken that plunge yet.
I have always been tempted by the lead holders but I can’t write with such thick leads, my handwriting becomes too illegible - need a fine line for clarity!
I have the uni kuru toga advance and absolutely love it. Writing with it feels so lithe and precise - feels completely different than other mechanical pencils to me. Highly recommend trying it
Pencils are another wonderful rabbit hole. I enjoy many. Autopoint in many varieties, many were dual & bought by government, the inexpensive Pentels, Blackwing & other wooden. 2mm, 5.6mm. And I have a bunch of older Bullet pencils. Most are with ads from stores, shops. Got most of mine refurbished. Nice thing is you can swap out the pencil stubs for another style. Even have some with a variety of drawing leads. In the US some were from National parks. I personally prefer the softer, darker leads but they can smudge. Don’t care. Greatly enjoy your videos. Well done.
You might think of checking out Jonathan Veley's Leadhead Pencil Blog. He's quite an authority on the history of mechanical pencils and may be able to offer some insight into your vintage models, especially that silver model.
You know, I started stealing Bic sharpewriters from my mom and never looked back. My handwriting looks so nice. Adam Savage from mythbusters also swears by them since they are the pencil they use at ILM and was so upset they changed the color and recently released a video. I know about mechanical pencil love but I also know about hate... I bought a Kuru Toga and it stabbed me too many times in my pencil case. Now I hate that pencil so much.
This isn’t relevant to this video but I’ve been wondering if you would consider making a sourdough video. It’s something I’ve been wanting to try for a while and your calm style would be very helpful
I actually made one for friends I have given my sourdough and sourdough recipes to! Here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iSNk3et46Yc.html I can't promise it's the same riveting content you are used to at BFP!
I've tried many pens and pencils but since a few years ago I've used exclusively a humble but well engineered uni alpha gel HD 2 0.3, with 2 writing modes on hold and "kuru toga" it's a joy! I've tried them all even the very expensive rotring line. But the alpha gel is extremely comfortable it's my go to pencil always.
Lukas: You say you use HB rather than anything softer because you like to press hard and achieve a dark line that way. I prefer much softer leads, and in fact veer towards 4B in my mechanical pencils, for the luxurious feel and darkness of result. But a transfer of marks is inevitable when writing on the verso, unless I use a paper-guard in between the leaves. Do you find you get this phenomenon with HB?
Yes I definitely get transfer marks through the pages! I don’t mind them though, it makes the paper below a bit more textured which is fun. I like the soft leads like 4B however the main reason I use harder grade is it keeps the point longer.
Very interesting video, cool seeing what u like to write with! U should definitely try out the Field Notes birch bark set. Has standard cover that marks up very easily, which I think u would enjoy.
@@BlankFirstPage Since u like ur botebooks developing character and showing wear, it seems like u would like it. The cover is a little thicker, but it is uncoated kraft paper and shows marks really easily. Ive been using it for a couple weeks now and it is showing all kinds of wear from my pockets, which fits in really well with the birch bark theme.

It is definitely not the easiest to write with. It is difficult to control well in the situations you want it for - writing on the go- I always feel like it’s going to slip out of my hands.
