We have a garden hose storage container (you know, that barrel you can wind your garden hose around I really can't think of the proper name right now) with a motor for automatic retraction. And to make sure the hose is rolled up correctly it is guided by a little ring which moves from side to side using this exact mechanism. I think this is not the use case you were looking for but it is at least A use case I can think of

So these are actual mechanisms used in the real world mainly in old machinery although some is still in use like the roller that caused the bar to move back and forth is used on larger fishing rods and in textile industries. He is a cad designer though and this is sort of like being a making butter knives for a living but in your free time you create the best filet knives you possibly can. It just hones your skills same with a machinist making ridiculously tight clearance parts when practicing. You do something significantly more difficult you'll be drastically better at the easier stuff. Why does anyone practice, his just happens to create neat images so he shares them. If you consider mastering a very valuable skill in today's world of cnc machines and 3d printers as wasteful that's on you partner.
