If there is a space which is lined by two walls..and the walls tend to move away from each other..both will try to pull the space to themselves..creating negative pressure inside the space. Same thing is happening in pleura...chest wall and lungs tend to pull in opposite direction..

Ma'am,why do the lungs have natural tendency to collapse and also why does the chest wall has the natural tendency to expand?

Every tissue or any substance for that matter has a natural tendency to be of a particular shape and size...it depends on the substance which form the core component of that structure...in case of lungs , presence of elastin keeps it in collapsed position...similarly for thoracic cage ...it’s composition accounts for it...I have explained it using springs...you also might have seen springs...which when left alone attain a particular length

Mam, Why the chest wall natural tendency is to expand unlike lungs which has elastic connective tissue which explains why lungs has tendency to collapse ? which component of chest wall makes its natural tendency to expand to expand?

If left alone, chest wall natural position is expanded compared to when it is with the lungs in body (lungs recoil tendency pulls it inwards)…so chest wall natural tendency is to go back to its natural state

If the intra plural pressure changes from -5 to -8cm H20 during inspiration approximately 500ml of volume will enter the lungs(tidal volume). So if the person has open chest cavity ,so that the pleural pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure ,then how much change in pleural pressure, will be there to achieve some tidal volume during inspiration

How it is possible that during exhalation the thoracic volume decreases only to the resting volume ...i think it should be less than it...therefore the intrapulmonary pressure will become 761 mmhg ..please suggest your views

Due to more volume in alveoli (due to inspiration) when alveolar size decrease during expiration - intraalveolar pressure increases
