Too bad nobody these days understands what democracy actually is, and definitely dont understand we have lived in a democratic REPUBLIC for a bunch of VERY GOOD REASONS. They're doing a hell of a job destroying what america is supposed to be though, a place where they can't just take our rights away as long as they get enough dummies to go along with it because they don't understand the consequences or ultimate purpose of ANYTHING that's happening right now. Well look like ch in a before long. And for anyone who's still clueless that's a VERY BAD thing. But as long as people are yelling "DEMOCRACY!" most of y'all will fall for anything 🤦‍♂️

The DeLorean was a deathbox because of the stainless steel body panels. They added so much weight it made a 35mph crash feel like a 60mph crash. And the frame could not hold down all that kinetic energy. The weight was distributed away from the frame so it had a lot more kinetic energy stored "higher" on the car and that's why you see so much movement in the body/engine mounts. Rear mounted engines also carry more momentum through the entire episode of the crash rather than it dissipating on initial impact. Stainless is not strong, it's corrosion resistant, but it's soft and heavy compared to other steel.

The reverse hopping clip is from a Peugeot 306. All versions of the 306 have a torsion bar suspension in the back. Same with the Citroens from that Era. Cheap french rear axle design that works. Its most commonly used nowadays on trailers. And best part, with a few tools you could easily set the ride height at the back by unscrewing a bolt, compressing the suspension and then tighten the bolt again.
@jessevanmierle5752
@jessevanmierle5752 4 месяца назад
I have a 306 phase 2 from 1999 myself and that torsion bar is pretty awesome, not only does it give a comfy ride it's also very serviceable, replacing shocks just requires a jack plus an axle stand and a 18mm and 22mm socket. and if you need to remove the entire rear wheel suspension you just need to remove 6 bolts, loosen brake lines and abs sensor lines and you got the entire bar out, which in my case has to be done because one of the trailing arms is stuck
@4nz-nl
@4nz-nl 19 дней назад
Set the ride height easy? If you have something to heat the fucker up, yes. Otherwise, they're usually completely stuck :)
@sw96
@sw96 14 дней назад
@@4nz-nl Depends on if you're in a rust prone area I reckon. I pulled the torsion bars from a '95 306 to try and adjust the ride height and sag and honestly wasn't too hard to do with penetrating oil and a hammer and punch, but I'm in Aus and we don't have to deal with the level of rust other places are stuck with. Ended up being a wasted effort too, the real fix would've been stiffer bars but that wasn't in budget.

regarding impacts of pre 1970s vehicles, one thing to remember: seat belt use was not required, in fact (pre 1966) there were cars that didn't offer them as an option. Also, effectively at hwy speeds, a head on collision with a stationary object equates to the impact of a 10 story fall. survivable perhaps, but not very likely.

My grandma once got out of a moving car, probably going around 20mph. She was driving. Got some scrapes, bruises, and sprained her wrist. Walked the 1/4mi home. Later, grandpa asked her what the DeSoto was doing in the neighbor's peach tree. (There was an orchard to that side, with a grade, so the treetops were fairly level with the street.) She said, "A bee got in and I got out." When they got the car out of the tree, it was (understandably) rattling horribly. They *drove* it to the mechanic. She cracked the frame in half. It was just the metal "skin" holding it together. Grandma didn't like bees.

Not sure if this has been commented earlier or not, but, while the DeLorean DMC-12 had the same double wishbone frame as the Lotus Elise - structurally, the underbody was Glass Reinforced Plastic or GRP "pods" onto which the 304 Stainless Steel panels were mounted, so I'm not surprised the car completely pancaked like that at such a low speed in a crash test.

Re the delorean, I think people underestimate how much energy is in a car at just 35. That also wasnt a deformable barrier like modern tests, it was a solid wall. It just needed a better safety cell, but it was the late 90s early 2000s before they really started getting strong.

Oof, yeah, that reminds me. 8:58 with the Delorean, at 9:45 the comment is made that "When the car was released, it was considered one of the most safe cars at the time." Angelina comments at 10:05 that "People say they don't make cars like they USED to!", but that the reason that was true is because new cars use 'crumple zones' to save your life. I remember when I was young there could be entire sports teams ended in a 25mph crash in the wrong car, and the driver could even be impaled on the steering wheel's bolt as an added bonus. For the car...you un-bolted the front bumper, hammered out the dent, MAYBE replaced a key or something in the transmission, and off the car would go...because the car did not save you, it was a steel box that left you to die. People DID die...way too many people, and too often it was cars loaded with teenagers or college kids. Drinking didn't even have to be involved...they didn't have anti-lock brakes, they didn't have traction control, all you needed was a tiny bit of snow and your rear-wheel-drive car would fishtail on you with almost NO provocation. Rain, whatever, it didn't take much, and our tires were pretty awful back then too. I had to argue that point with 'an old feller' in the town where I live, and I mentioned WHY they were so 'easy to fix' after an accident and to my amazement, he thought that over for a moment, then nodded and says, "Huh, I guess that's a fair point!" I won't argue that some of those cars back then might not LOOK amazing...many of them did look amazing! I will however argue that they were not engineered to save your life. They effectively 'made themselves into indestructible steel boxes' when they could, so until you hit the 'modulus of strength' in the car's frame and made the steel yield or shatter, you were effectively 'running into your barrier with your face, only buffered by the front console of the car itself'. The dash was your 'crumple option', and otherwise you were just playing 'kinetic games' to see if you lived or died. My favorite 'extreme safety option' that I've found out about so far was finding out that in the 6th Generation Civics (maybe before then, I owned a 6 and that's how I looked it up) when you were in a VERY high speed crash, if you crashed hard enough it would break the motor mounts free, lock the transmission up, and by doing that it would *throw the engine and transmission out the side of the engine bay* as its last-ditch effort to spare you from death by ejecting mass and giving you that much more crumple-space when you'd violated all of the buffering the car's body had to offer. If you've ever seen a high speed accident involving a Civic (or any other of its 'frame siblings' that used the same engineering-shenanigans), most of the time if it was a head-on crash you'd see the engine and transmission clean-across the intersection from where the accident itself happened...that was the Civic's last-ditch option to try to save your life. By barfing out its engine and transmission it shed like what, 3-400lbs, and gave you whatever-more-space the engine bay had left to it as additional crumple zone. By tossing the engine, the engine 'took its need-to-be-stopped' off on its own 'merry adventure' across the intersection with it when it got tossed. I suppose the 'extra crumple space' was the main interest, but 'not needing to stop the motor from coming into your lap' is a nice side effect. For performance, size or options I may not be impressed with most modern cars, but for SAFETY, I'm a huge fan. They crumple so WE don't. It's important!

Hah! I watched more of it and Angelina mentions the 'steering wheel impalement' thing at 10:40 . And now I've finished watching that section so I wouldn't need another comment about it. :) But...yeah, please, no chest-bursting impalement for me, thanks!

Early 90's Saturns are another good example. They were designed for the engine supports to break away from the sides and underneath to drop the motor i a severe front impact, as opposed to throwing it towards the windshield. GM only did this unibody design with Saturns for about 3 or 4 years before implementing into their other model cars. Ironically, the safety feature of the automatic seat belts that ran along the track on the doorframe is what killed the inventor. He got rear ended in an accident a few years after most automakers invested in his design and implemented them. The force of the impact popped his driver's door out of the frame and it went backwards as his car was still traveling forward from the impact. The seatbelt cut so cleanly through bone and tissue in his neck, the ME at first didnt believe it was the seat belt that decapitated him.

I got driver side T-boned last summer in my '48 Ford by a '22 Chevy SUV. I had to replace a fender and the steering arm. The Chevy was totaled. Flip side of the coin, my adult niece was in the passenger seat and the impact plus lack of seat belts caused her to headbutt me and give me a black eye and she got a nasty cut on her leg from the bottom of the dash. They definitely don't build them like they used to.

7:28 my dad actually had this happen to him. I forget which car this happened in, but the latch actually had failed previously and he had rested it on the "second position" of it since it wouldn't rest on the lock area while we were going 70 on the freeway. he actually used this as a lesson for me to not panic while stuff's going wrong with your car which actually ended up saving my butt when I lost a tire due to a tire failure on my car

You guys were talking about not surviving a crash in a early the 50s Chevy or classic car. Actually they are safer than you would think. I hit a concrete barrier going over 50 mph rolled it, and walked away with a few scratches on my shoulder from it hitting the ground as I rolled. I also got rear-ended by someone going freeway speed in my 56 Chevy sedan, walked away, pulled out the driver's side rear fender, replaced the front end sheet metal, grill, and drove it for about 6 more years till the engine died
