mazdaplz It is a Mauler, not an Awesome This is really interesting to look at in detail, because the Com Guards actually seemed to respect Zellbriggen in that 4 vs 2. It looks like the Atlas pilot is the Lance Commander, he was the last to open fire, and only AFTER the Timber Wolf actually opened fire on him (which btw is a breach of the Zellbriggen rules right there, the Zeus was his opponent because it fired on the TWolf, not the Atlas)... then the TWolf fired a salvo at the Zeus and only then did the Atlas respond, along with the Catapult which also did not fire until that point... by pretty much blowing the Timber Wolf into the atmosphere with a single missile salvo. Sucks to be the Kodiak pilot, because now it was all out everything goes. ^^
Marcel Ebert I didn't notice it before until you mentioned it, where the Timber Wolf pilot had targeted the 'Mech beside the Atlas (I cannot see it properly to know what to 'Mech is exactly) while the Mauler was hitting the Kodiak. According to the the rules of Zellbringen, the Clans shouldn't be doing that, since they place so much on honour and 1v1 duels, even in the battlefield. The Jags fucked up, and rightly so. This was probably the start of the downfall of their Clan, ignoring their own rules of engagement.
***** Ironnicly, the Jags are the ones the least likely to break the rules of engagement. If I remember correctly they only really brook the rule during the invasion of Huntress. By the way, the mechs are: Atlas Mauler A Zeus or Battlemaster (the first one to fall in the group of the Atlas) A MOTHERFREAKING CATAPULT FUCK YEAH! #totallynotinlovewigththatmech
+Kuro Nyra It's definitely a Zeus. By the time MW2:M came out, Harmony Gold had already wrecked havoc at FASA. If you use the developer easter egg, one of them even comments about how they couldn't include it.
not really.. the opening cinematic to mercs 2 is better the opening cinematic to mw2 is great bother are better than this is... for the battle of tukkayid this is pathetic...
My favourite cutscene from the MechWarrior 2 era, second only to the intro for MW2: 31st Century Combat. Times may have changed, but quality FMV like this still capture the essence of what it means to be a MechWarrior in a way that is still very rare to see these days, in my opinion.
The sheer ferocity Comstar had when they came at the Clans was downright terrifying. They didn't stop, they never even slowed down. They climbed over the bodies of their dead comrades just to bite at the ankles of the Clan warriors. The battle of Tukayyid was a hell of a fight. Watching this just hammers it harder. This is how they won almost every battle. It took twice as many mechs to take these down, but they didn't stop until they won.
Evey time I watch this it brings a tear to my eye on how beautiful and epic it is. What makes it legendary is the track in the background. Why can't MWO have this type of feel to it like Mechwarrior had in the old days. If anything I want them to take notes from the second generation of entries in the series and the targeting elements of their sequels and tries to put that in Mechwarrior 5. I may be salty but I want to play the games in their true unparalleled glory of the old days that and i want an actual mech simulator to control with an actual joystick and throttle.
So the cool thing about the Mechwarrior 2 discs was that if you put them in your CD player it doubled as the sound track. Excellent composition. I miss the Mechwarrior days when Activision was at the helm.
+Demopan D It's possible that that may have been part of the tactic by the Inner Sphere; put a couple of vulnerable targets to lure out the fire support 'Mech and take it out of action, so that the bulk of the main assault force further at the back won't have to deal with it later in the heat of battle. Had the Vulture been still up and operational by the time the two forces clashed head-on, it may have turned the tide of battle against the IS. Just my theory anyway. It does remind me of a mission late into the game when the Clans invaded, the player starts out in a crater surrounded by fake IS assault 'Mechs filled with explosives to lure the Clans into attacking them, only to detonate when they've closed in and inflict large amounts of damage, after which the player and his lance mates spring into action and launch a surprise attack to beat back the invaders. One of the best missions in the game, but also one of the hardest, in my opinion.
@@darkdill was he suppose to just walk past and say “no, you’re too little, shoot me in the back.” Then you would still call it arrogance. You are children equating war and combat to schoolyard fights. The clan code encourages one on one combat not “only fight your weight class” this isn’t boxing. And they won all the way to Tukkayid and kept their conquests. Luthien survived Only because the Wolfs Dragoon’s showed up.
As much as I love this intro, after all these years, I still can't get over the fact that that Mad Dog's arm completely went through the Catapult's ear as though it were a ghost.
***** I thought too, when I first saw it all those years ago (upon release), but that is just the angle of the camera, the arm only appears to go through the Catapult's lrm mounts, when in fact, it brushes shy of the Catapult by (possibly) mere inches.
1996 and this was the coolest thing known to man. I think I actually tried to videotape it once after completing the main campaign... talk about obsessive.
Thats what Frederick Steiner (Comstar commander) was counting on, he chose Tuyyakid as the battle ground and played to the inner sphere's advantages and the clan weaknesses. Up close in your face fighting. Which nullified the clan longer range weapons.
also he understood the clans predilection for ammo based weapons, due to the higher damage potential... he used alot of vehicles as fodder, and most of the com guards (based on the scenarios we played fleshing the battle out) used energy based mechs using star league designs, which narrowed, if not overcame the clan advantages... those were fun fights... I got to play in the battle that was used as the falcon guard story... and I distinctly remember a pewter mini being thrown at my head after a head shot + crit x3 on an executioner.... IIRC I was using a star league shadow hawk, but its been a few minutes......
If Atlas mechs existed in real life, they must be terrifying. Knowing you're going to throw all of your stuff at it, and it's just going to lurch back a bit and just... keep... coming.
You know, so far battletech is the only mech series that makes fast and hard to destroy mechs look plausible. Gundam has non-gundam mechs, but those seem to be made of glass and plastic explosives. Battletech has a more even field, and I think the mad cat and catapult designs could actually work as real military hardware, minus the lasers of course.
Damn, that was uploaded 8 years ago! MS2: Mercs is still the best episode in the series, and I still have goosebumps when watching this outro. Battletech rules! Blake bless you guys.
Andrey Borzenko Death to Blakist! In the name of Clan Ghost Bear, we shall destroy your Blakist for crime again humanities. Not to mention to dezgra mercs behind you! Stravagh :)
In mercenaries intro you can see the traditional atlas firing it's AC20 blasting off the arm of a ZEU-X. In this video this is the atlas variant carrying a Guass rifle instead of the AC20.
Well, thanks to Michael Stackpole's writing, that became the norm; hard to salvage from the defeated when the largest part left after the blast is the size of your fingernail. *rolls eyes*
I could imagine the look on the face of the pilot who was piloting the Timberwolf as the Atlas raised its arms and primed its Arrow IV. What a nice revenge after taking a double load of LRM 20's.
This short is actually fairly well directed. It would have been much better had there been radio chatter amongst the pilots, like there was in the intro.
it's not just you, it looks like the first part was done with loving care, interesting camera angles, meaty animations, attention to how the mechs come apart... and then they ran out of time. The Mad Cat explosion in particular is kind of pathetic.
needs 6 assault mechs, at least 1 atlas (check) and 1 zeus (nope, unless I missed an old graphics version) and 2 awesomes..... the rest must be either fedsun assaults, or stalkers.... because stalkers.......
The scariest aspect about the Atlas for me is that the cockpit is, despite outward appearances, friggin tiny! Good luck hitting the left eye with enough boom to actually injure the pilot. Lucky onehit kills are extremely rare on it... combine that with 19 tons of armor...yikes! Of course, that is for the Mechwarrior games, in CBT the chance to hit that cockpit is exactly the same as for every other mech.
Man I this is one of my favorite ending videos. Even though in game graphics are better than this video these days. The fight scenes, pacing and even the music were all really well done considering when it was made.
Does anyone remember that this isn't the COMPLETE ending? After this there was an animation of a guy sitting on the beach in the sun having a drink? As if he had retired rich???
I would absolutely LOVE to play this game again, unfortunately, the patches do not work for my computer :-( MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries was the best of the MechWarrior games, not just in game-play, but the opening and ending cinematics.
I used to love getting in the tiniest mech you could, think it was the body suit or something and put the fastest engines you could in it with 2 small pulse lasers and run like 250km/hour trying to take on a full sized mech. It was basically 1 hit and you died but you were so fast and small it was hard for them to hit you. Anybody else ever do that? lol
+tlv156 In MW4:mercs there' s a mission to destroy the factories for the Templar if I remember correctly. It's a solo mission, and they're defended by an entire mech company, including multiple assaults. After repeated tries, the only way I finished it was taking the lightest mech I had (don't remember which one), stripping everything off except a couple of small lasers and maxing the engine out. And than I simply avoided the enemies altogether, destroyed the turret controls, and focused on only completing the objectives and getting the hell out of dodge. They took out half my mech in a single PPC hit to the back while I ran for the evacuation zone. But they had no chance of keeping up with me, and I brought what's left of my mech to the dropper.
+tlv156 There was some kind of bug that ignored weight restrictions for the elemental suits so in addition to the engines, jump jets and weapons I could add ridiculous amounts of armor to the point where you could just take more AC20 rounds than a lance of mechs could carry. It was fun for a laugh, but being invincible in 'instant action' gets dull fast.
@recniabsal Basically, it's because Tukkayid stopped their Blitzkreig. The clans started with a technological edge, but with the treaty of Tukkayid the industrial juggernaught of the Inner Sphere was able to ramp up production and research, closing the gap if not tech wise, then numerically. IS tech is still inferior in a lot of ways to clan tech, but it's also more diverse...and again, numbers. I agree though; clans are pretty badass.
That and what mainly gave the Clans their edge was that the IS was unused to fighting them and their tactics. That 15 year reprieve levelled the playing field immensely. While the IlClan era still eventually happened, the Clans had to fight a *fuckload* harder than they did in the Clan War when they had to take on the Republic of the Sphere, who had Tech that was close to par (not to mention Clan Sea Fox selling shit to everyone, which the Republic took advantage of at length). Should also be noted by that point that many clans had adopted some IS Tech as well, such as Clan Wolf's adoption of the Davion-built RAC/5. Course, Clan Wolf continued to be the "good" Clan in that era as well, notably in at least one case freeing most of their Republic Bondsmen and allowing them to pursue their own paths (either becoming full Warriors of Clan Wolf or being allowed to leave).
This was one of my favorite clips from the MW series because the it was one of the first times I can recall seeing a battlemech so convincingly animated on the run. The Mad Dog (one of my personal favorite chassis) in the clip appears to have a very natural stride, at least from the angles they use. On the other hand, the heavy hitters that arrive on the scene after the Mad Dog goes down seem to be moving like clay-mation figures. They don't look quite as natural. Or is it just me?
I remember this somewhat. I still have Mercenaries--the CD of the full game came packaged with a video card me and my sister got when I was a younger teenager--I loved the crap out of that game and I still think the mostly metal soundtrack is one of the best around in terms of game music. But between that and the other MW2 music, I know I'm not alone.
Simple: easy-to-kill target. Pilot of the vulture got a bit over-eager and ran out in front in a relatively thinly-armored (at least when compared to some others in its exact same weight class) fire support 'mech. It doesn't help that said vulture pilot tried to face down about 295 tons worth of walking metal, including an Atlas, all by itself.
I remember playing this game when I was like... 12. I was bad at games back then so I could never beat the last mission. I couldn't manage to control the torso and legs independently and years later, I didn't have the game to go back to. Being able to see the good end is nice.
Continuation of my last comment... The MMO verson would still have contracts pitting you against NPCs but would implement a new type: counter contracts. For example you accept a contract from Draconis Combine for a Search and Destroy mission, the counter contract would be to protect that target(s) which some other mercenary outfit would take on :) Un/successful contracts help shape the powers of each Periphery power: Combine, House Davon, etc. or even against the clans.
But the Battle of Tulayyid, especially day 18, was only a press to gain Dinju Pass by subterfuge. The Jade Falcons had no reason to be there, honestly, and with ComStar's counterattack, the Jaguars couldn't hold ground. Of course the Jade Falcons gained an objective via Olalla, but the Dire Wolves hung tough, and found themselves in a position to call Dr. Fizziwig into the fray. Without proper helium supplies, they were dead in the water, making the ... wait what?
@HighfireX Why not? It gives a sense of realism, especially when in the real world, when you have a monster build out 100 tons of metal and wires, you're not exactly going to get a 'mech that's light on its feet or twirl around gracefully like a ballerina.
@VazzaPrime The Crusader ideology didn't fracture far enough at Tukayyid, hell, the entire Refusal War proved a whole point, well when the Falcons and Wolves seriously weakened themselves. But you're right about the entire Counterattack arc when Clan Smoke Jaguar literally got smoked.
Well, 1/6th chance of hitting the head with a punch, and you'd only remove the armor and one structure point, no guarantee you'd destroy the cockpit.. just nitpicking XD
Most atlas pilots redused to go with kerenksy on his exodus. So the ending showing an atlas triumphing over the clan mech is a symbol for the old ways of the IS winning over the clans
@Gallowell My point is, it's biggest weapon is an AC20 mounted on its right hip, the weapon + ammo is heavier than all its other weapons combined, yet the weapon appears to be this tiny little gun that's attached to his hip where it wouldn't even have a big firing arc...
Continuation of the last comment... The guild/organization system would ofcoarse be in the form of Mercenary Companies. You would be able to choose freelance or join another person's mercenary company. In either case staying as such until you have enough credits to start your own company if you wish :) All M2: Mercenaries features would be available: Mech Bay, Dropship (owned or contracted), Office, Terminal, etc. Sigh... I hope such a Battletech game is in the works.
@HaloSpartan96 Sounds like you found an old MW2 game. Unless they've made an updated version that I'm unaware of, all the old Mechwarrior 2 games at best run in Windows 98 at the latest. They're all mostly still kinda DOS-based.
Calm down, it's a fictional universe, and the ruleset for the tabletop simply doesn't incapsulate every single aspect of how the mechs function in the books...
In terms of tonnage lost. the IS came 2nd best here. losing 2 assaults, a heavy and a light to the clans 2 heavies and an assault. but this the comguards on Tukkayid we are talking about. While the clanners fought with honor, the comguards made sure they died for their honor too. Comstar went to Tukkayid to only try to win at all costs but to grind down the clan's spearpoint to a blunt spade. as tex put it. "Comstar sent all they had Tukkayid and was willing lose it all...to save terra alone." the clans didn't just lose mechs on Tukkayid. they lost everything that mattered at that point in time to them on Tukkayid and the clan's marks the end of the high point of clanner power. as it was all down hill from then on.
Microsoft owns FASA Interactive and had nothing to do with the creation of the Dark Ages storyline, and no it wasn't Fanpro either....it was done by Wizkids Games, Jordan Weiseman in particular.
@KoalaNoMarch Yeah, but the AI for them was glitchy at best; had my guy crash into mountains and buildings many a time, or get stuck in mid air. And the enemy DOES fire at them; one time my aerospace fighter got stuck and it seemed like every mech in visual range just turned and shot at him lol. As far as I'm concerned, this game was the best out of the series, Mech 3 coming second just for sheer graphical upgrade and better AI. Remake this game with better graphics and you'll have a winner
Oh, yeah - that *is* a Mauler that drops last, not an Awesome (no PPC shots; back in MW2 they were the very distinctive 'bouncy blue balls of death' :P) but with the shoulder shields, you can understand the confusion...thanks!
In clan wars there was different technology avaiable. They had no Arrow Missiles yet. In FedCom Civ-War omnitechnology was more popular and modifications to weaponery was introduced (along with Arrow's) But not before 3058.
Isn't it spelled "DFA," meaning "Death from Above"? I still have my copy of the game, but I don't recall engine damage working that way. This was Activiction's attempt to emulate as close as possible FASA's game--including the ridiculous 30 metre range increments. Engine damage just means you generate more heat every turn--it doesn't mean you can't run. Only Gyro or Leg Actuator damage can do that.
well...i mean commando vs. mad dog, you're probably going to be screwed either way, not to mention you're penned into a canyon and can't really go anywhere if you wanted to run... also, gotta love those headshots on those catapults in this game, why was that so easy?
The IlClan era begins in 3151... An unspecified Clan conquers Earth, I'm going with the Falcons, although bears are possible It doesn't last forever because by the 3260s we've in the Third Leage era, and a conflict over Taiwa...Saint Ives.
@@jamesperkins191 I love the 11-year necro. Not because it took so long, but because I was looking for this video five years back out of sheer nostalgia. Damn, a decade has passed haha
@@aegisghost I didn't even see the date, well done for managing to keep the same account all that time! And it’s a 25 year old game! I first played MW2 when I was 14
Both were in the red after I killed it I guess due to the explosion and heat generated from close proximity. Thanks for the clear up ;) And yes its DFA I dont know why I was thinking Dead or Alive XD
