4:29 That actually raises a good point. If Paramount was going to collaborate with another major studio on this film, why didn't they partner up with Warner Bros., since they own the company that animated the first movie and their contemporary animation department has done a great job replicating Hanna-Barbera designs in various projects?
It kinda makes sense since the animation in this movie kinda has the same level of animation used in Tweety's High Flying Adventure, Kangaroo Jack: Good Day U.S.A. and those Straight to Video Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry movies.
Thank you for addressing the issue with the sheep. It's bad enough for the lambs to bully Cardigan, but the older sheep similarly turning their noses at him and letting it happen is too far.
The live-action was my childhood, and I read the book. I didn't see the first animated one, but I saw this, and since I was a kid and did not looked into it, I thought this was supposed to be a sequel for the live-action one (I realized it was not the case when I got older) and I felt like some of the continuity was off and I thought that the spider's eyes looked kinda creepy, but I watched it anyway, because: "I can see Wilbur again, it doesn't matter how!" Yeah, now the how obviously matters to me, but at the time I was just happy for the content.
...Where is Cardigans mother? I mean, the opening comes across like it's spring and a lot of new baby animals are being born, and it seems like we're supposed to assume Cardigan was born into the flock...but when we first see him, there's no adult sheep nearby, and obviously nobody in the flock defends him from teasing.
I actually remember watching this sequel as a kid XD The only things I recall liking about it were the lamb and the fox, the rest was awkward and forgettable. Even as a child I was so off-put by how different the spiders looked compared to the original (and I honestly wasn't even aware that the spider in the flashback was meant to be Charlotte herself, like dear lord wtf did they do to her design)
I do kind of like The fox's villian song. It's the only good part of this PIGSTY. Speaking of which The fox was also one of the villians from Land Before Time 2 The Great Valley Adventure and he was Pinky from Pinky And The Brain
I think the spider triplets' arms are supposed to be pedipalps, though their designs are still weird. They look like the Powerpuff Girls. I just think it's odd that Henry Gibson didn't reprise his role as Wilbur, since he was still voice acting at the time. (He voiced Lord Pain in The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.)
Alec Foisy apparently I'm not surprised they made the spiders look like the ppg. It was the early 2000s and the PPG craze was at its peak. Still doesn't save how out of place the spider girls look. Might as well throw 2 side characters that are a curly haired ginger cat with glasses who is cynical, inventive and reclusive and a ditzy blonde female Labrador with pigtail like ears who is playful and who ruins his experi- oh I mean his nap time, only for him to meow 'GET OUT OF MY TERRITORY!' (Another CN reference there)
The spider sisters are pretty much just knock-offs of the Powerpuff Girls. Funnily enough there actually WAS an episode where the guy was making deformed knockoff clones of the girls.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the fox character(or any predatory antagonist in an animal movie.) wasn’t overtly evil and was just trying to get a meal? I’m sure the people who make these movies aren’t vegans themselves and eat chickens and eggs. I actually have ideas for stories with a fox main character and I’m considering scenes with him out hunting and describing how he needs meat to survive. I want the stories to be read by young kids too.
There is a children's book called Vuk (I don't know if it has English version), with foxes as main characters and it's pretty respectful about of nature. It has a nice movie-adaption (and an unneeded sequel that noone likes to talk about), with some changes, but it's still doesn't ruin the spirit of the source-material. This is the English trailer of the animated version, if you care: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6NtlcWSUagw.html And I found the full movie in English: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B-OhTCOiMGY.html (I listened a few parts and I think the original dub sounds more alive)
I actually really enjoyed this movie as a kid. Sure, its not really a good sequal from a critical stand point. But for me personally, its a guilty pleasure.
First of all a bug's life does need a sequel and its going to happen someday second of all Charlotte's web is not a classic its a travesty to humankind and one of the absolute worst animated movies of all time.
The sad thing is, i actually saw this movie before the original and before i read the book. Boy, what a game change it was. The more I loved the original film and book, the less i liked the sequel. Honestly, a sequel wouldn't be a bad idea: wilbur's anxiety of death without Charlotte or maybe Charlotte's daughters having to either follow in their mother's footsteps or do something else could be interesting - hence the "charlotte's kid" song was the only song i liked and remembered the most. But yeah this is completely pointless movie. I like to see your thoughts on the 2006 film some time.
Agreed, I saw the first one before this and read the book a little after seeing this, the original and the live action one. The idea of a sequel wouldn’t be that bad, if anything if done right(unlike this) it could have been terrific lol. The idea I like most is the idea of a livestock predator out there, which is what Farley the fox was supposed to be. But maybe instead of being portrayed exactly as dastardly and such, maybe not so much. Could beg the question is he truly any worse than Charlotte was? Predatory by nature and brings on the idea of forthcoming death to all things eventually.
Nellie, Aranea and Joy are pretty much knock-offs of the Powerpuff Girls. Right down to the personalities. Nickelodeon animated this WITH universal? No wonder - Anndi McAfee and Rob Paulsen were both in The Land Before Time sequels (which were both Universal Studios productions) and Maria Bamford was in Barnyard (made by Nickelodeon Movies and the creator of Jimmy Neutron). Also - Harrison Chad also voiced Boots in Nick Jr's Dora the Explorer, and both Amanda Bynes and Debi Derryberry (the voice of Jimmy Neutron) were heavily involved with Nickelodeon at the time.
4:59 Wait that's Charlie Addler voicing Templeton? Wow, nice casting choice. Really, he's a perfect fit for such character. Least he's not doing one of his more annoying voices.
Oh dear God--it's a Nickelodeon Movie starring Boots, Penelope Taynt, Bev *and* Ed Bighead, and some other guy playing Wilbur. Oh, and uh, Yakko Warner. Or Pinky.
Why give the spiders arms? Why not go with pedipalps? At least THAT would be more spider like and less centaur like. Sure they belong mainly to jumping spiders, but it would make MORE sense.
I had this on DVD as a kid. My sister and I (but mostly my sister) watched it all the time. Most of it is burned into my memory now. But oddly enough, I remember the fox being a girl.
I remember watching advertisements of this movie, when I was little when I had VHS tapes of Dora, Blues Clues, and Max & Ruby. YES, I was like 4, 5, when had those and VHS was still a thing for Kids back then.
What do you expect from the storyboard artist for Secret of NIMH 2? This looks almost as bad. Also with that hair, the spiders look like the Hex Girls from Scooby Doo.
This has a cheap tv show feel about it, like the ones they played very late on Saturday morning or on Sunday when most of the kids have left to do other things.
Accurate. I saw it as a kid on a kid's channel in one of the weekends, when I used to watch TV regularly. They didn't really advertised it, it was just there.
@@gerawallstar3487 It was Minimax. I don't know if it was on Nickelodeon too, because I didn't get to watch Nickelodeon a lot as a kid, because we did not had it. Some relatives of mine had, so I only could watch the channel rarely.
One suggestion I have for a future review is Bagi: the mighty monster of nature, a 1984 anime film that's basically a bit of a love story with some very WTF moments thrown in there. It was made by “the god of manga”, Osamu Tezuka, creator of classic manga and anime such as kimba the white lion (which you reviewed), Phoenix, black jack and most notably, Astro boy. His works are great and this is no different. Although, there is no English dub, but there is an English subtiled version on RU-vid.
This movie doesn't exist this movie doesn't exist.......................why did it have to exist!!!!! It's awful, the songs are awful, Wilbur's out of character, and it feels like the writers did not put any effort into making it a Charlotte's Web sequel.
i actually liked this movie when I was a kid. the little yappy dog was shit tho. as far as a kid's movie goes it's fine. look if you want a quality rewrite pay someone on fanfic.net or something. But what shocked me most is that Cardigan was a RAM. I always thought Cardigan was a girl. OH MY GOD OK! I'll put up a basic plotline since the constant pessimism is really going to harm your mental health. First thing: The Animals -Cardigan needs a BOY to voice act him if you want people to know he is in fact a ram. -Wilbur is...fine I guess...I have issue with the whole "wild hog" thing so to fix that they could just have had him root in a beehive and get covered in honey and dead leaves instead of pristine green ones. -Bessie. I love bessie but when I revisited her as an adult I realized they had to have sold her calf in order to get milk from her. either show us the calves in a separate pen or inform us they were in fact sold. -Farely. Holy shit do I love foxes. Now foxes are oppurtunistic predators. meaning they'll take what they can get. Perhaps having a guard dog roam the place would make Farely catching a hen feel a it more real. perhaps the dog is why the chick doesn't come closer as it would scent Farely and scare him away. -Gwen does not need change because Gwen The Goose is absolutely Perferct Erfect Erfect. Fight Me you uncultured walnuts. Also it was CHARLOTTE who almost killed templeton in the first one. The story doesn't look like it needs too much change other than making the characters more competent and giving us a REASON why black sheep are ostricized other than "HURRRR IT LOOKS DIFFERENT" like was cardigan's mother or father a known troublemaker in the flock? Do the other Ewes and Rams have a problem with them or something? GIVE US A REASON. Timing. The Original looked like you could place it anywehere between 1910 through the 1920s. MAYBE the 40s or 30s. Fern wearing a cami top and jeans is a no go here.
If this film is really a sequel to the 1973 movie, why can't this be a property of Paramount and Viacom instead of Universal, and let Nickelodeon be the developers of it?
Finding Dory did seem to have some animal logic issues but Pixar did a much better job, it seemed cartoony but still had a touching message on disability and it had no villain which works in the movies favour!
Not only are the songs and designs of the characters not staying true to the original BAD, but they didn’t even bother getting back Henry Gibson to voice Wilbur again like in the original, or find someone even who sounds close to him, that’s what also killed it for me. I almost laughed when I first heard it. That voice for Wilbur in this is AWFUL, and it doesn’t sit right with me for Wilbur’s character, it doesn't sound right coming out of him and it doesn’t even sound as nice as Henry’s voice for him. Why make these sequels if they can’t even get the voices for the original characters right and find the most terrible voice actors to replace the better originals and don’t even try to find someone who sounds identical to them? It ruins it. T_T The REAL Wilbur to me will ALWAYS be Henry Gibson, not this CHEAP awful voice-actor who voiced Wilbur’s cheap rip-off in this terrible cheap sequel.
I'm convinced that the designs of Charlotte's children were inspired by THE POWERPUFF GIRLS Nellie is Blossom, Joy is ButterCup, and Aranea is Bubbles TELL ME I'M WRONG The funny thing is I actually ❤️ THE POWERPUFF GIRLS But seeing their designs pasted onto spiders is unsettling
The loved the Charlotte’s Web story & was delighted to find the sequel at the library. I especially loved the colour and rhyme game. But when I realised Mr Hirsch, Farmer Zuckerman thinking Wilbur as a wild pig and going to kill him & then Farley being captured in the end, I wasn’t too keen then. It’s just that I don’t approve of harming wild animals. I only eat domesticated ones. I liked how many fans hated this.
Holy crap I remember this movie. I was 6 and really sick and just remember waking up and falling asleep throughout this whole film. I thought it was a fever dream.
I actually remember seeing promos for this back then when it came out and wanting to see it, but never got to. I recall seeing a clip on TV once back in 2006, but even then I simply changed the channel as I wasn't interested at the time. Years later, I can see that I made the right call. Stick with original.
Yah know, I've heard that farmers like to keep a black sheep in their herd cause they can use it as a frame of reference for how many sheep they got. I don't know if I am missing or misunderstanding this, so if you know better please correct me.
Aaaaaah, this movie. THIS MOVIE. THIIIIIIIS MOVIIIIIIIIIIE. At short, this is really a bad/good example of 'Sequel that came too late for anyone to really give a fuck' syndrome. It's from a story that doesn't really need a continuation and in doing so, a lot of the charm and messages from the story are lost and replaced with attempts to 'fit in' with the era of its time. The thing about 'timeless stories' is that they're told in a way that even if the story was written 200 years before anyone was reading it was born, there is a message and theme that will continue to resonate with people no matter where they're from. Charlotte's Web, the original story, is one of those things. We're not supposed to pay that much attention to WHAT YEAR the story took place in but rather the relationship between the animals which in turn reflects relationships between people. THAT'S where our minds are supposed to go. And yeah, this movie dip way too deep into 'generic talking animal' territory where it didn't really add anything or do anything new that we hadn't seen before in similar features. I mean, some of the voice acting is good but that can't save a boring movie which is what this is; boring.
5:32 It seems rather odd that this movie operates on cartoon animal logic by virtue of the fact that the original movie didn't; Charlotte herself only lived for a year in the original movie.
I mean foxes are one of the smartest aninals on rhe planet but they are adaptable and will eat damn near anything. I mean this would work with a wolf as a villan or some other animal that purelt eats meat but a fox can eat fruita and shit if he\she really needed too.
Fudge you i like this movie right next to the jungle book 2 and tarzan 2 i don't care what people say about these sequels still think the animation doesn't look half bad i love it!
