The maiden flight of my freshly built AR Wing Pro did not go quite as hoped. Everything worked exactly as expected...until.... Well the thumbnail shows the results. You'll need to watch the video to find out why.
It took 3 hours of searching, a moment of sheer brilliance and another 20 minutes of bushwhacking to walk directly to the crash. It took another 45 minutes to find the GoPro in the knee high grass and scrub. Yep, I share my what led me right to the crash in the video.
I learned a lot from this flight. Truly everything worked exactly as it was supposed to - except the pilot in the end. It was a very simple rookie mistake that I share at the end of the video in the wrap-up.
The medic has been called in, and repairs are well under way.

Awesome 👏🏼 you are right . A lot went right until you took over. You did good job. I hope you next flight is a success. Looking forward to your rebuild. That should be a breeze. Glad you got your GoPro. The GoPro also has a beeper. 😉

Thanks for the comment and supportive feedback. I didn't know about the gopro beeper. When I did find it, it was off.

I´m sorry for your crash but i´ve a quest cause i´m new to inav (build alot of BF Quads). The autolaunch did well and all seemd to be good. When you lost vid did you trigger one inav mode f.e. return to hom or loiter ? I´m just on the way to built this thing with an digital system. Kudos for your well done build vid´s.

Hiya. Thanks for leaving the comment and question. The autolaunch did work as expected. I had been flying quads for 3+ years, but that was my first attempt at flying a fixed wing. I didn't have the switch positions/settings memorized to deal with an 'oh no' situation instantly. When I lost video, I hit the wrong switch (one I normally use on my quads) and put the wing into manual mode. It crashed before I recovered from that mistake. Also, be sure to check the CG before every launch. As a quad pilot, I need to remind myself of this every time I fly a wing.

Great lessons learned! The only way to understand success is by measuring failure. I chose a self powered beeper that continues to beep even when disconnected. Its a great help if you eject your battery or have a catastrophic kinetic disassembly (😂). And I always record DVR. Because if you weren't able to connect to get gps coordinates, you can always go to the DVR and read the last coordinates before you lost contact and use those to find it. Both have saved my bacon. Keep up the good work!

I had the DVR recording and it helped (got me within 500 meters), but I didn't have the GPS coordinates in the DVR. I will from now though. Thanks for that pointer. I use self powered beepers in all my quads. I don't know why I didn't in the wing, I have one sitting on the desk.

Greetings from México! I have the same FC that you have, you lost video because you wired the FPV camera to a VBAT power pad, i did the same thing and Lost video and crash, please wire the camera to a 5V pad and you are fine, i know your pain, every crash we learn more and more, never give up !!!!

I just checked, and you're right, I did use VBat pad for the VTX and camera - just as it shows on the matek site (www.mateksys.com/?portfolio=f405-wmn#tab-id-4). I'm not sure why that would cause the video to drop. The camera is rated for 20v, and the vtx for 6s - I was only using 4s. Sometimes this stuff can be so confusing/frustrating! Thanks for the advice and for noticing how I had it wired. That issue would be very hard to trouble-shoot. You probably saved me another crash. I'll make the switch to a basic 5v pad during the rebuilding process!

Ouch! Please document the repair process, I just know my maiden flight is going to end in a repair session as well.

The repairs are under way and I've got some video of the process in the works. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.

Well, it is all part of the learning curve. But I have to admit, that was a huge risk everything considered. If you collected all the foam pieces, You would be surprised how well you can glue them back together with something like Foam-Tac.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. It's totally fair to say that the conditions were less than ideal and my choice to try it wasn't the best of my life.. Thankfully the repair has been quite successful. I'm just putting together the 'we can fix it' video now.

That will soon be fixed with some tape and glue., Build Fly Glue Repeat. To help find the GoPro here's a little hint attach a length of ribbon/streamer to it so when it falls out it will be easier to find.

I had the exact idea about the ribbon on the gopro. I'll be rigging something up before the next flight. I think I'll need a stronger base plate to hold the gopro. The balsa just disintegrated on impact.

Oh man! now i'm nervous!

Don't be! Make yourself a clear checklist before the flight and don't try on a super windy day like I did. Make sure a before flight CG check is a part of your checklist. After I did the repairs, my next 'maiden' went flawlessly. I've flow quite a few times and only 'accidentally landed' once more. Just get out there and toss 'er up....its a blast!

Thanks! Had my first maiden flight yesterday and it was a disaster haha props wrong direction, and my mixes were also reverse. Didn't get off the ground and the tail broke. Luckily, it broke clean off and it was easy to glue back together. Today, I did the second maiden flight attempt and the auto launch work beautifully. Need to get accustomed to flying planes, its very different than quads. Flew two times, before I was interrupted by another individual who flies drones, ended up talking to me for a bit. You're video were helpful with setting up INAV. Thanks again! @@blueskyfpv

Strengthen the entire leading edge of the aircraft maybe gorilla tape or fiberglass tape would work. Sure it adds a bit of weight but in a crash you might be happier with the result.
@blueskyfpv
@blueskyfpv Год назад
Thanks for the suggestion. Fiberglass tape is a good idea. I've already gone out and bought some 1.5 mil (I think) laminating film that I'm planning on using to cover most of the aircraft. I had the original decals from sonicmodell on the leading edge and that helped a bit, so I'm hoping much thicker laminate will help.

We're male, we do things like this 🤪 We know before we do stupid stuff, and still we try because maybe we'll make it happen,
