How much money do medical assistants make per year? What is the average salary or hourly wage for a CMA (certified medical assistant)?
Medical assistants provide invaluable services in hospitals, physicians’ offices, and many other healthcare settings. The job duties of a CMA may vary, depending on their scope of practice within each state, certifications obtained, and the specific employer requirements, but here are some of the common job duties for this profession:
-Performing skills such as taking vital signs, administering medications/injections, cleaning medical equipment, EKGs, drawing bodily fluids for labs, etc.
-Recording patient information and maintaining medical records.
-Performing office/clerical duties, such as ordering supplies, providing customer service, scheduling appointments, etc.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, the average salary for a medical assistant in the Unite States was $33,580, and the average hourly wage was $16.15.

Salary also really depends on whether you are in city, or in the burbs. Another factor is whether you work for a large organization. Big hospitals will pay more than little clinics and private practices. Big hospitals also offer better benefits, retirement/pension, and sometimes are unionized. Being unionized is nice because you will actually get breaks and lunch! Isn't that nice?! I *believe* that new medical assistants make somewhere around $18 in Seattle, and top out around $25. The pay goes down the further you are from the city center. But one thing to keep in mind is make sure you work somewhere where you are happy, respected, and valued. I'd rather take a pay cut than work in a toxic environment with lousy management.

I have been a certified medical assistant for almost 8 years. It has been an amazing career to have. I have worked in different types of clinics and have gained so much knowledge. I have worked beside RN’s and had the same job task as them in the clinical setting. I am currently in school to become an RN and there is so much I already know because of my background. I say go for it if you want to become a Medical Assistant. 👍🏾

Worked as MA for a year and get a bit over 20 in Washington state, it's easy, relatively stress free, and you feel supported, good place to test out medical field and learn if you are willingly to transition to nursing. Also good career to stay and grow, some MAs who have been doing this for a while get around 30$ .. which is very decent

I’m a cna working towards my lpn and I make 21/hr. I feel like everybody has choices and it’s all about where you wanna go and what lifestyle you want. Sadly, this isn’t enough money, lol. Especially when there are people making $16/hr as a cashier at chick fil a

I know a medical assistant that makes 160000 a year but he works in a general physicians office. He said it depends what industry you work for.

I just graduated as a Medical Assistant in October with no luck of landing a good job or even offered reasonable pay. Most employers require at least 1-2 yrs of experience where I’m located 😞 I’m heading to nursing school so I guess I’ll get my field experience as a nurse.

YAAAAASSSS!!! 😊😊😊😊😊👍💃💃💃You delivered Ben great AWESOME! job👏👏 love the updated video. Well Ben I L❤VE helping my patients enjoyed doing their unaboot A.K.A softcast to help bring down their swelling due to poor circulation. I loved changing their old dressings with endoform, AFM, adaptic, greenmesh, profore, santyl, or silvercell i also loved doing the foot and ankle Xrays but I hated the toxic, disrespectful atmosphere among the staff. From my personal experience it all depends who your working for, where your located, and how much experience you have under your belt.

It's not worth it to pay tuition for a job that it's going to pay you as much or less as any other entry level job in your city. I learn my lesson 10 years ago. My recommendation is to go to a real college and become a RN.

Is there a trasition (bridge) program to transition from a CMA to RN? I’m currently in my externship part of my school and wanted to know if any credits could apply to any RN classes.
@parristaylor4732
@parristaylor4732 3 года назад
I think it depends on the school you went to for MA and the nursing school you choose. I’m a MA in a progressive nursing program now. My school excepted my A&P 1 and 2, microbiology, psych 1 and 2 ( I did psycho 102 on my own, not apart of MA program), sociology, and two English language course. So besides chemistry, I only need to take the nursing classes all the way thru RN ADN portion of nursing program. Do your research.
@aznisles
@aznisles 2 года назад
There isn't a bridge from CMA to RN, no. As in your experience as a CMA won't let you bypass any core courses for an RN program. For example, some LPN-RN bridge programs exempt LPNs from the first semester of clinicals and/or Nursing-101 classes. CMAs will have to take all nursing-specific coursework. But depending on what kind of school you're currently attending, there's a very high chance credits from your general education courses will transfer over. Just to further explain Parris Taylor's comment, nursing programs will almost always accept credits from English, math, history, art, and science courses so long as those courses were taken at a regionally accredited school, such as a community college. If you're currently attending a nationally accredited school, such as a technical institute, it'll be hard -- nearly impossible -- to find another school that'll accept them (another nationally accredited school might). If you're planning on going back to the same place for nursing as medical assisting, then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. The one thing to keep an eye on is how old the credits for your science courses will be when you decide to return; many schools won't accept credits for science courses older than 5 years, a few 10 years. Good luck!

I know 4 people who spent 2 years in medical assistant school, and were never hired, because everyone wanted 2 yrs experience or more, and ended up having $32,000 in tuition to pay back. Employers need to give new grads a chance. That's why I didn't take it. Could you do some info on CNA -2? Some states have them (like NC) while other states nursing boards don't recognize them. CNA -2 is almost like an LPN from what I understand.

Where the hell did y’all go to school? 32? People you got rip off. Sorry the truth hurts. I think a lot of people who don’t get hired is not due to experience but the way you carry yourself. I was hired on two months after my 4000 dollar school. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ but there is no denying the salary. It’s not good but you need weight it out. You’ll see it’s not a job where you should be making past 20 an hours.

Its hard to find a bridge course from cma to nurse, i would just take cna because its easier, in my college, cna take nursing courses which you can transfer to become an rn, its 4 courses overall and after you've taken it, your path to nursing will cut by a ton

NURSE JK it is a career choice if you plan on furthering your education. Being a CNA or CMA is perfect jobs to gain experience while you are going to school to get your degree in nursing so to say they aren’t good career options is pretty ignorant.
